A Tahlequah man will be spending
time in a federal prison over the next
five and a half years after he was sentenced Jan. 8.
Joby Northington, age 34, of Tahlequah, was sentenced to 65 months
imprisonment, followed by 3 years of
supervised release for possession of
an unregistered firearm (destructive
device).
The charge is a result of an investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Northington was indicted
in July, 2014 and pled guilty in August, 2014.
The Indictment alleged that on or about April 12, 2014, Northington did knowingly possess a destructive device, which is a firearm,
not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and
Transfer Record.
Joby will remain in the custody of the United States Marshal Service pending transportation to the designated federal facility at which
he will serve his non-parolable sentence.

Police were forced to shoot a Hulbert man
three times with beanbag bullets; he was angry
and becoming violent because he thought his
woman loved her dog more than him.
According to the affidavit, Wagoner police
were dispatched to the 300 block of S. Lee Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. on December 24 for a
verbal dispute between a woman and a man with
a knife. When they arrived, the woman told them
Martin Richard Perez, 53, was drunk and threatening to harm her and her dog. She said Perez
thought she loved the dog more than she loved
him.
Police found Perez sitting in a lawn chair on
the back porch. An officer approached him and asked him to show his hands.
Perez replied, “F--- you, and get your light out of my eyes.”
He told the officer if he came any closer, he would kill him.
Perez then showed the officer that he had a knife in his hands.
The officer drew his service weapon and told Perez to drop the knife. The man
refused.
More officers arrived to assist, and Perez threatened to kill them. The commands from officers and threats from Perez continued.
Perez went in the back door and walked through his house out the front door.
During this time, he never stopped threatening to kill the officers.
A deputy loaded his service shotgun with beanbag ammunition. Perez stood
in his doorway and kept saying he was going to kill all of the officers. He made
a forward movement toward police, so the deputy discharged three rounds toward Perez, hitting him three times.
Perez walked into his house, and police yelled at him to come back outside.
Perez walked out of the residence and said, “I’m shot and I give up.”
Officers took the man into custody.
Perez is being charged with five counts of assault and battery with a dangerous
weapon. His bond was set at $40,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on
January 15, 2015.

Each year, nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner. At a rate far higher
than other forms of youth violence, teen dating violence impacts 1
in 3 adolescents in the United States through physical, sexual, emotional and verbal abuse.
Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month is a national effort to raise
awareness about dating violence, promote programs that support
young people, and encourage communities to prevent this form of
abuse with the goal of decreasing the prevalence of dating violence
among young people.

A Gore man unwittingly led police to the discovery of
some illegal items in his home when he stole some stuff
from Walmart on December 20.
According to the affidavit, Sallisaw police were contacted
by Walmart employees on December 21 about the theft that
occurred the night before.
An officer viewed surveillance video, and he saw a black
coat-wearing Thomas Dalton Gann, 23, push a shopping
cart full of items out of the store without paying for them.
The officer went to Gann’s residence in the 300 block of
South Hickory.
Caitlin Michelle Cawhorn, 24, answered the door and allowed police to enter.
Gann was also at the residence.
He admitted to taking the items, and he gave the stolen
goods to police.
An officer asked him where the black coat he had been
wearing during the theft was.
Gann said he didn’t know.
Cawhorn told police Gann had been in the second bedroom.
An officer asked her if there was anything illegal in the
room.
She said, “No, but you are welcome to go in and look.”
An officer searched the room, and he found the following
items: alprazolam pills, Oxycodone pills and a green leafy
substance that tested positive for marijuana.
In a wallet, he found Cawhorn’s ID and two baggies containing a crystal-like substance that tested positive for meth
and more Oxycodone pills.
In the rest of the house, police found digital scales with a white powder residue and an
opened syringe with an exposed needle on a dresser in a room where babies had been staying.
A second needle was found in the same room under some children’s clothing.
Gann is being charged with distribution of a controlled dangerous substance, knowingly
concealing stolen property, possession of a controlled substance in presence of a minor or
within 1,000 feet of a school or park, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and
unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $10,000. Court date was
unknown at time of print.
Cawhorn is being charged with distribution of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled substance in presence of a minor or within 1,000 feet of a school or park,
child neglect, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and unlawful possession of
drug paraphernalia. She was released on a $21,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court
on February 4, 2015.

Today, I’m going to re-visit who
has the biggest impact on our new
drivers that hit the road each and every day.
First, the Oklahoma Driver’s Education classes and schools across
the state are second to none, and do a fantastic job of educating our
young drivers on the law, and proper way to safely operate a motor
vehicle. I would like to point to some other folks, who I believe
have a far greater impact on how our youngsters approach driving,
and address them, and that is the adults who these young drivers
look up to: the parents, older siblings, and extended family.
If you fit in this category, please pay attention. I believe that our
kids learn their driving behavior not from the Oklahoma Highway
Patrol, other law enforcement, or driver’s education instructor, but
from you, the parents and family. I know I learned that way! Let
me give you some examples.
You are a dad, and for whatever reason, when you are driving
in town, or on a county road, you just don’t buckle up. Maybe its
because you don’t drive fast in these areas, or have a farm tag and
just don’t have to; however, you do buckle up when you get on
highways or go on long drives. The message you are sending is that
when you are in the vehicle there are certain times that it is OK not
to wear your seatbelt. If dad doesn’t have to do it, I don’t either! In
fact, at least 50% of all accidents happen on county roads, and
you are more likely to be in an accident within 10 miles of your
residence than otherwise. So the real message you are sending is,
don’t buckle up during the times that you are most likely to need it!
Next, mom gets off work at 5:00, and one of the kids has a ball
game in another town at 5:30. She can get there if she speeds. After
all, it is important to get to those activities, and it won’t hurt to
push the speed just a little. The message you send to your kids
is, its OK to speed, as long as you can justify it! The facts are that
unsafe speeds kill more young people 16 to 25 than any other single
thing! The message here needs to be that its OK to slow down and
show up a few minutes late.....it is much better than the alternative,
which is never showing up at all because you’ve been involved in
an accident.
Please remember, when you are driving, you are setting
the example for someone....and they are watching you all the
time. What message are you sending? I hope it’s the one that says,
I’ll lead by example because I love you, and want to do my part to
keep you safe! Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

Amanda Jones, 24, of Westville, was sentenced to 60
months federal imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release for Conspiracy.
The charge arose from an investigation by the District 16
District Attorney’s Drug Task Force, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the United States Postal Inspection Service.
Jones pled guilty in August, 2014 to an Information filed alleging that from in or about June 2013 until on or about April
9, 2014, Jones did knowingly and intentionally conspire,
confederate and agree with others both known and unknown
to commit offense against the United States, namely, possession with intent to distribute and distribute methamphetamine, and in furtherance of said conspiracy the defendant
committed the following Overt Act: On or about June 17, 2014, caused $13,300 in United
States Currency to be transferred to individuals in California to pay for methamphetamine
received and distributed by Michael A. Cooper.
Jones will remain in the custody of the United States Marshal Service pending transportation to the designated federal facility at which she will serve her non-parolable sentence.

Tommy Louis Taylor, 35, of Muskogee, was sentenced Jan. 7 to 110 months imprisonment, followed
by 3 years of supervised release for Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
The charges arose from an investigation by the
United States Marshals Service. Taylor was indicted
in June, 2014 and was found guilty in August, 2014
by a federal jury.
The evidence presented at trial proved that on or
about December 19, 2013, Taylor, having been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for
a term exceeding one year, did knowingly possess
in and affecting commerce, an H&R .32 caliber revolver, bearing serial number BA021273, which had
been shipped and transported in interstate commerce.
Taylor will remain in custody of the United States
Marshal Service pending transportation to the designated federal prison at which he will serve his sentence.

An Okmulgee County off-duty deputy
nabbed two escaped inmates while traveling
through Lincoln County on Dec. 28.
Eddie Patton and Carlos Arkeketa were
both taken into custody without incident
just after 10 a.m. on Highway 62 just east
of Prague.
According to reports, Deputy Jim Rasmussen and his wife were traveling through
Lincoln County when he spotted the pair
walking along the side of the highway in
their prison uniforms. He knew three men
had escaped from the correctional facility in
Boley and had his wife call 911 while he detained the pair.
Deputies arrived at the scene shortly
thereafter and took Patton and Arkeketa
into custody.
