AMERICA’S DEADLIEST SHOOTINGS
ARE ONES WE DON’T TALK ABOUT
On any given day in America, an average of 63 of our mothers,
brothers, partners, and friends are taken from us by gun suicide.
But tomorrow’s deaths could be prevented. Give your loved ones
a second chance at life. Store your guns safely: locked, unloaded,

MISUNDERSTANDING
62-year-old Steven C. Nelson allegedly broke
into the Duncan Dollar General in the early
morning hours of May 21 because he thought
he was suppose to go to work there.
According to the affidavit, Duncan police officers were dispatched to the store at approximately 7:26 a.m. An employee on scene said
the front door was broken out, and a person
was inside the store.
The officers saw a silver truck parked in front
of the store. Some broken glass from the door
was on the hood of the truck.
Two officers and a K9 entered the store.
They found a man crouched down behind a wire cart digging through the
shelves. When the officers took the man into custody, he identified himself
as Nelson.
The man’s words were slurred and he seemed lethargic. He told the
officers that the alarm went off hours ago when he came to work.
When an officer asked him if he worked there, the man replied, “That’s
what I understand.”
He also told them it was his third day.
An officer also asked the man if he had any medical problems. He said
he was diabetic.
First responders were called to the scene. They tested Nelson’s blood
sugar levels, and he was transported to the hospital for treatment.
A store employee provided police with footage from the security cameras. In the video, Nelson hit the front door with his truck at approximately
4:33 a.m. He entered the store shortly after 5. He had a cane with him that
officers later found in a trashcan by the wire cart he was found hiding behind. They also found some toilet paper and bottled drinks in the cart - an
employee said those items were not in the cart when he closed the store
the night before.
Nelson was wearing jeans when he entered the store. An officer found
the jeans in the bathroom trash can.
An officer also found several items that weren’t from the store, including
a damaged flashlight, a rat tail file, some binoculars, an empty Crown Royal bag, a filet knife, and a bucket seat lid.
After Nelson was released from the hospital, an officer placed him under
arrest and took him to jail. He told a nurse that he had “probably” used
meth the night before.
Nelson is being charged with burglary in the second degree. His bond
was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on July 20,
2022.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A METER READER
THREATENING A WATER METER READER
WITH A KNIFE -- Man arrested in Midtown.
On May 5, around 2:30 p.m., Officers responded to a house near 13th and S. Birmingham Ave. The call was for an Assault
with a Deadly Weapon/pocketknife.
The victim, a water meter reader, said the
suspect, James Swatek, chased him with a
knife for several blocks and threatened to kill
him.
Before Officers arrived, Swatek retreated
into a house. Officers learned Swatek kicked
in the door to get into the house, which belongs to a relative who is currently out of the
country. The owner of the home said Swatek did not have permission to be
there.
Swatek initially did not comply, but eventually was taken into custody with
help from a K-9 Officer.
The day before, Officers responded to the same location. Two people reported that Swatek pointed a handgun at them. However, the two people did
not want to be victims of a crime, so Swatek was released that day.
Swatek is currently in the Tulsa County Jail. He was arrested for:
- Assault with a Deadly Weapon
- 2nd Degree Burglary
- Threatening a Violent Act

FORMER HYDRO ASSISTANT POLICE CHIEF
SENTENCED IN CADDO COUNTY DISTRICT COURT
Tyler Davis, the former Hydro, Oklahoma Assistant Police Chief, is sentenced in Caddo County
District Court on multiple child pornography and
child sexual assault charges. Davis, 37, was arrested on January 28, 2021 and was charged with
the following:
Possession of Child Pornography
Possession of Child Pornography
Possession of Child Pornography
Possession of Child Pornography
First Degree Rape
Child Sexual Abuse
Child Sexual Abuse
Child Sexual Abuse
In April 2022, Davis plead no contest to all eight counts. On June 3, the
judge sentenced him to 12 years in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections
(DOC) for counts 1-4, and 25 years in DOC for counts 6-8, with 13 years suspended. The sentences will be served concurrently and Davis will get credit
for the year and a half that he has spent in jail.
Between April and September 2020, a social media platform reported a
user uploading multiple sexually explicit files of a pre-pubescent female. The
social media platform reported the images to the National Center for Missing
and Exploited Children (NCMEC). NCMEC then notified the OSBI since the
Internet Provider (IP) address was traced to Oklahoma. Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) agents
opened an investigation which led to Davis.
On January 28, 2021, ICAC agents served a search warrant in the 600
block of N. Broadway in Hydro. As a result of the search warrant, Davis, who
in addition to being the Assistant Chief in Hydro was also a Caddo County
Sheriff’s Office reserve deputy, was arrested. He was booked into the Grady
County Jail.
If you suspect a child is being sexually exploited, contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children immediately at 1-800-THE-LOST or
cybertipline.org. You can also contact the OSBI ICAC Unit at (800) 522-8017
or [email protected].

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

WORKING MAN BLUES
Ada man Joshua Chance Bates, 41,
was arrested on May 18 after a deputy
found a large amount of marijuana in his
possession during a traffic stop; he said
he was just doing his job.
According to the police report, a Cotton
County deputy was on patrol when he saw
a silver car traveling westbound on US 70
at approximately 9:30 a.m. When he saw
the car travel left of center, he stopped the
car and made contact with the driver.
The driver was identified as Bates.
While speaking to Bates, the deputy noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming
from inside the vehicle. He asked the man
if there was anything illegal in the car.
Bates said no.
The deputy then told Bates he was going to search the vehicle since he
smelled weed. Bates then admitted to having some roaches in the ashtray.
He also said he had “pounds” of marijuana.
The deputy searched the vehicle and found an ice chest in the backseat
that contained a large amount of marijuana. He asked Bates why he had
the weed.
Bates said he was transporting it for a man in Lawton. He said he was
transporting it from a grow house in Ardmore, but he didn’t want to say
any names.
Bates did say that he was making $12 an hour transporting the weed,
and he was supposed to call a man named “Josh” when he arrived in
Lawton.
Bates changed his story, telling the deputy he lived in Waurika, then
changing it to Ada. He told the deputy he was just trying to throw him off.
The deputy found the following in the vehicle: nine bags containing a
green leafy substance, 67 grams of mushrooms, some scales, unused
baggies, two lighters, a grinder with marijuana residue, and two jars and
four small containers that contained a THC paste.
Bates is being charged with two counts of possession of a controlled
dangerous substance with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of drug
paraphernalia, and unsafe lane use/change. His bond was set at $15,000,
and he is scheduled to appear in court on July 28, 2022.

A Tulsa County jury finds Levi Cobbler guilty in
the November 2020 murder of Robert Dale Henderson III. On April 21, 2022, a sentence of 28
years was recommended for Cobbler, 22, for First
Degree Manslaughter. Cobbler is set for formal
sentencing on June 15, 2022.
During the early morning hours of November
26, 2020, officers from the Collinsville Police Department responded to 302 N. 12th Street in Collinsville after receiving a 9-1-1 call for assistance.
Officers entered the residence and found Henderson, 26, dead inside. Collinsville police then
requested assistance from the Oklahoma State
Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).
During the investigation, OSBI agents identified Cobbler as the suspect
in Henderson’s death. On November 26, 2020, agents located Cobbler
and arrested him for Henderson’s murder. He was transported to the David
L. Moss Criminal Justice Center in Tulsa.

OSBI INVESTIGATING OFFICER INVOLVED
SHOOTING IN CHICKASHA
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation received a request from the Chickasha
Police Department to investigate an officer-involved-shooting that occurred late last night.
Based on the OSBI’s initial investigation, this
is what is known at this time:
Shortly before midnight on May 31, 2022, the
Chickasha Police Department requested Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) assistance with an officer-involved shooting that
occurred in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Officers were dispatched to the 1800
block of W. Idaho Avenue after a neighbor reported seeing a shirtless man
yelling obscenities in the street. Officers from the Chickasha Police Department arrived on scene and the man, later identified as Justin Keith Henderson, 34, did not comply with officer commands and went back into his home.
A short time later, Henderson appeared in the doorway with what appeared
to be a rifle in his hand. Shots were fired by a member of the Chickasha Police Department and Henderson was hit. Henderson was transported to an
Oklahoma City area hospital where he is being treated for non-life-threatening
injuries.
Upon completion of the OSBI investigation, agents will submit a report
summarizing their investigation to the District Attorney’s Office. The District
Attorney will determine whether or not to file charges.
