Enid Police Department’s K9 Fett and K9
Ren have received bullet and stab protective
vests thanks to a charitable donation from
non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s,
Inc.
K9 Fett’s vest was embroidered with the
sentiment “In memory of K9 Jethro, Canton,
OH Police Department”. K9 Ren’s vest was
embroidered with the sentiment “In memory
of K9 Ty, California City Police Department”.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c(3)
charity located in East Taunton, MA whose
mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law
enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this
potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers. Since its
inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 3,400 protective vests in
50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a value of $5.7 million
dollars.
The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of
age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to
participate.
The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K9 is
$950.00. Each vest has a value between $1,744 – $2,283, and a five-year
warranty and an average weight of 4-5 lbs.
There is an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United
States. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please
call 508-824-6978. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provides information, lists
events, and accepts tax-deductible donations of any denomination at www.
vik9s.org or mailed to P.O. Box 9 East Taunton, MA 02718.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

10 | SEPTEMBER 2019 WOODS COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
this for that
A 45-year-old convicted felon was caught
selling a firearm behind a liquor store on August 18.
The Taloga man said he was just trying to
pay someone back.
According to reports, a Woods County
deputy was notified that Monty Eugene Long
was going to be selling a firearm at a Waynoka liquor store. Knowing that Long was a
convicted felon, the deputy headed that way.
When he arrived, he saw Long enter the
store through the garage. The deputy walked
into the store and saw Long and the store’s
owner sitting at a table. Long was signing a
piece of paper. There was an open black nylon case with a handgun, loaded magazine and some bullets on the table.
The deputy asked the men what they were doing. The store owner handed
him a check that had previously been written to him. He explained that Long
offered to sell him the pistol so he could get the check back. Long told the
deputy that he had just signed the bill of sale over to the other man.
The deputy advised Long that he couldn’t have any kind of firearm in his
possession since he was a convicted felon. Long said he knew that, but he
only acquired the gun to pay back the store owner.
The deputy advised the man he was under arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to jail.
Long is being charged with possession of firearm after former felony conviction. He was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.

Police receive many calls for assistance, but this one was quite unusual. Douglas
Kelly, 49, from Hawthorne, Florida, called the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office asking
them to test the drugs he bought a week earlier because he wanted to press charges
against the person who sold them to him. Kelly’s public defender did not immediately
respond to a request for comment. Police said Kelly told them he had a bad reaction
after he smoked what he believed to be meth and thought he was sold another illegal
substance.
“In an effort to ensure the quality of the drug the suspect purchased, detectives told
Kelly if he came to the sheriff’s office they could test the narcotic he purchased,” the
Putnam County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook.
Kelly drove down to the police station and handed over the clear, crystallized substance for offices to test, and tests showed it was meth, according to the Facebook
post. He was arrested and charged with possession and booked into the Putnam
County Jail. Officers used this incident to let others know on that they are always here
to help test any illegal drugs.
“If you believe you were sold bad drugs, we are offering a free service to test them for
you,” the Facebook post says. “Remember, our detectives are always ready to assist
anyone who believes they were misled in their illegal drug purchase.”
Police in Rhode Island say a man taunted officers, yelling “you’ll never catch me,”
minutes before crashing his all-terrain vehicle in Rhode Island and getting caught by
police. Authorities say 25-year-old Ruddy Rodriguez was among a group of 10 to 15
people driving ATVs and other vehicles erratically on Providence streets. Police say Rodriguez drove through a red light before driving onto a sidewalk, causing pedestrians to
run out of the way. His attempt to escape officers was cut short when he crashed into a
large cement potted plant on the sidewalk. Police arrested Rodriguez, and he is facing
charges of reckless driving, eluding police and property damage.
A woman pulled over by Crossville, Tennessee, officers while riding an electric shopping cart stolen from Walmart, claimed she was just on her way to get a cup of coffee,
investigators say. Police responded around 5 a.m. to a report of a woman driving an
electric scooter in the slow lane on Highway 127. When officers were able to get her
to stop, they said the driver, identified as Sally Selby, claimed she took the cart from
Walmart and was driving it to Waffle House to get a cup of coffee. Police watched
surveillance footage from Walmart and said Selby was observed entering the store at
4:15 a.m. and driving the electric scooter as she shopped. Around 4:40 a.m., officers
advised she exited the business, drove around the Walmart parking lot and then rode
the shopping cart onto Highway 127. Crossville police have not said what charge or
charges Selby will face.
A group of teenagers who used a stolen van to smash their way into a medical marijuana dispensary in Colorado would be better off sprinkling what they stole on pasta
than smoking it. Witnesses said the teens stole containers of what appeared to be
marijuana at Native Roots Dispensary at 3660 Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeastern
Colorado Springs. Except what’s on display isn’t marijuana… It’s oregano, which probably would make you cough if you smoked it but won’t get you high.

Florida woman farts, pulls knife on man who
complained, police say
A Florida woman faces an aggravated assault
charge after authorities say she passed gas in line
at a dollar store and pulled a knife on a man who
complained about it.
Citing a Broward Sheriff’s Office report, the Miami Herald reports 37-year-old Shanetta Yvette
Wilson passed gas while waiting in line at a Dollar
General and upset a nearby customer. The report
says the offended customer and Wilson then got
into an argument “in reference to the defendant
farting loudly.” It says Wilson then pulled a small
folding knife out of her purse and told the victim she was going to “gut”
him while moving as if to attack him.
Wilson was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly
weapon without intent to kill.
