not legal yet
A Pauls Valley couple, and partners
in the CBD oil business, were arrested
on February 24 for allegedly growing
marijuana plants in their home.
The couple, 38-year-old Kerri Leigh
Bishop and her 36-year-old husband,
Joshua Michael Bishop, are owners
of a legal hemp store, but the hemp
wasn’t what got them locked up.
According to reports, Garvin County
deputies were advised that the couple
was growing weed in their home located in the Beaty community southwest of Pauls Valley. They went to the
Bishop’s residence and found a “sophisticated” pot growing operation in
the couple’s house. The system consisted of marijuana plants sustained by
portable power supply, artificial lighting,
drying fans, watering containers and an
air ventilation system.
Deputies seized a total of 65 plants.
They also located smoking devices,
scales and approximately three pounds
of marijuana contained in glass jars, according to information
released by the sheriff’s department.
Deputies, assisted by officers with the Pauls Valley Police
Department, also conducted a search warrant at the couple’s
Paul Valley business on North Oak Street, where they seized
CBD oils and other hemp-related items.
Both Bishops are being charged with cultivation of controlled substance, possession of controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, conspiracy to commit a felony,
failure to display tax stamp, possession of drug proceeds and
child neglect. They were both released on $20,000 bonds and
were scheduled to appear in court on March 23, 2018.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

35-year-old Ann Hyman is being charged with
embezzlement of county property after she allegedly used her former position as a Love County
Fair board member to write fraudulent checks.
According to reports, Hyman wrote a total of
61 fraudulent checks amounting to approximately
$21,000 over the period of February 2015 to December 2017.
In December, Hyman gave a cashier’s check in
the amount of $16,335 to the fair board. Reports
state that county officials found the suspicious
checks. The officials notified the district attorney,
who then turned the case over to the attorney
general for investigation.
After the investigation was complete, embezzlement charges were
brought against the woman on March 2. Bond was set at $2000.
If convicted of the charges, Hyman could face a felony conviction, serve
up to 5 years in prison and be required to pay restitution. Her next court
appearance is set for May 2 at 9 am.

CHRIS BRYANT 100 S. WASHINGTON
ARDMORE, OK 73401
(580) 223-6014
Early Saturday morning, March 3, the
Lone Grove Police Department received a
call about a man making suicidal comments
inside his home at 587 Fruit Street. A Lone
Grove officer and a Carter County Sheriff’s
deputy responded. The Lone Grove officer
knocked on the front door, but no one answered. Seconds later, a man opened the
door, pointing a handgun at the officer. That
officer shot several times.
Travis Joe Graham, 28, was hit. He was
transported to a hospital in Denton, Texas.
The Lone Grove Police Department requested OSBI special agents investigate the officer-involved shooting. No one else was injured. OSBI
agents will conduct a thorough investigation and include the facts in a
comprehensive written report. That report will be delivered to the district
attorney. The DA will determine if the shooting was justified. The officer is
on routine administrative leave while the case is being investigated.

Q&A: I am worried that my loved one is
driving while using drugs. What do I do?
If you share a vehicle, you should demand that your loved one see a physician before using the car again. This can
be very inconvenient for both of you, but
it is imperative that drug users not drive.
Your loved one’s life, yours, and others’ could be at risk.
In many cases, you may not be able to
control your loved one’s ability to drive.
You must tell him or her that the single most responsible thing to do is not
drive while using drugs (including abusing prescription medications). All drugs
can impair skills necessary for the safe operation of a vehicle, including motor skills, balance and coordination, perception, attention, reaction time, and
judgment. Even small amounts of some drugs can have a measurable effect
on driving ability.
Drugs also affect people’s ability to tell if they are impaired—so you might
have to make some difficult choices. If you believe your loved one is driving
and impaired, you should consider calling law enforcement. This can be a
difficult decision, but sometimes court intervention can actually help force a
loved one to seek help. For more see our DrugFacts on drugged driving.
If you are an employer and suspect an employee is using drugs, you should
immediately suspend any driving privileges while you get it sorted out. You
can contact this government helpline to find out more about workplace drug
testing: Drug-Free Workplace Helpline: 800-967-5752 (800-WORKPLACE) or

april is child abuse
prevention month
We All Can Play a Part in Keeping
Children Safe and Families Strong
This month and throughout the year,
Jailbirds encourages all individuals and
organizations to play a role in making
Oklahoma a better place for children
and families. By ensuring that parents
have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help prevent child abuse
and neglect by making meaningful connections with children, youth and families in our communities.
Research shows that protective factors are present in healthy families. Promoting these factors is among the most effective ways to reduce the risk of
child abuse and neglect. They are:
• Nurturing and attachment
• Knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development
• Parental resilience
• Social connections
• Concrete supports for parents
• Social and emotional competence of children
April is a time to celebrate the important role that communities play in protecting children and strengthening families. Everyone’s participation is critical.
Focusing on ways to connect with families is the best thing our community
can do to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect.

Life is a series of struggles and pain. The
way we deal with this pain is what defines
us, not the situation- the way that we react
to it.
I know in my personal walk, my life has
been nothing but a struggle. One of the biggest was when my mom was battling cancer.
It was 2009. We had only been in Oklahoma
for two years. We’d moved here from North
Carolina because of financial problems. We
had family In Cushing, OK, so they offered to help my mom get back
on her feet. She was divorced and a single mother struggling to raise
two kids: my sister Chloe and myself.
We got settled into a rent house my uncle owned. He’s agreed to
provide it rent free until my mom got a job. She soon got a job. She
was also going to nursing school. We never had much money, but we
did have enough to get by.
Right when things were beginning to get better, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. I still remember the night she told me. I was so
afraid of losing my mom. After the tears, I decided I would be by her
side and help her through it. Things began to go gradually downhill at
first, but then quickly everything was falling apart.
We had no money so the hot water and electric was being turned
off regularly. On top of that, the only food we had to eat was donations
from the Salvation Army or the church. At this time, I was about 9 years
old and I was faced with a very big obstacle. I had no guidance, my
parents were divorced, and my dad was never in the picture. This left
me with a choice. I could either give up or press on.
I picked myself up and helped my mother through her treatment of
chemo and radiation. I would cook her meals and care for her when
she was sick in bed. My sister, on the other hand, was not involved and
she was living her teenage years being rebellious and irresponsible. It
was just my mom and I left to fend for ourselves.
Through this experience, one thing I held on to was that God was going to heal my sick mother. Through her losing her hair and becoming
bedridden, I had faith and never quit believing. By the grace of God,
the cancer was gone in 2013. She was, and today is still, a survivor.
This is just an example about an obstacle in life. There are many of
stories, just like mine, in the world, but something people don’t understand is these terrible obstacles in life are good because, from them,
we learn and grow as individuals.
I personally believe that God allows us to go through struggles to
keep us humble and to rely on Him because no matter how strong we
are no one can face the battle of life alone. No matter how difficult your
situation is, don’t give up, because for every obstacle in life, there is a
reward. But to receive it, you need to be strong and have faith.

NEWCASTLE MAN FACES
MURDER CHARGES
A Newcastle man was taken into custody
after an OSBI investigation turned up likely
evidence that he had shot his father to death.
OSBI special agents arrested a James Kyle
Brooks, 37, on March 16. The victim, Timothy
Brooks, died of a gunshot wound to his abdomen in August 2012.
James called police from his father’s Marlow home reporting the shooting as a suicide.
Marlow police detectives and investigators
with the local district attorney’s task force
conducted interviews and collected evidence.
The medical examiner stated that although he
believed it was highly unlikely Timothy Brooks
shot himself with the shotgun, he did believe
it was possible.
The case went cold for several years until the Marlow Police Department
requested an OSBI special agent review the facts. The OSBI agent immediately began finding discrepancies in the son’s story about how his father shot
himself.
The agent discovered James had taken out a $500,000 life insurance policy
on his father. The policy had a two-year suicide clause, meaning if the person
killed himself within that two-year timeframe the policy would not pay out. The
shooting happened two years and six months after the policy was issued.
James also could not explain how the shotgun had recycled after the trigger
was pulled. He also claimed his father was cleaning the 12-gauge shotgun
prior to the shooting. Officers and detectives at the scene noted the absence
of any cleaning materials or cleaning solvent odor.
James Brooks was taken to the McClain County jail on one count of murder
in the first degree with deliberate intent. He will be transported to the Stephens County jail to await court proceedings.
