A Ponca City high school student seems not to have learned his lessons in
the classroom.
Around 1 p.m. Feb. 4, assistant principal Thad Dilbeck said a student told
officer Josh Henderson that Brantley Avallone, 18, had a knife. Henderson
went to the student’s classroom and found Avallone, who was wearing a
black leather jacket. Avallone said he only had tobacco in his possession,
denying having anything illegally.
Henderson told the student he was going to search his pockets because
of the knife report. Sure enough, Avallone had a heavy folding knife in his
right coat pocket, Dilbeck said. The assistant principal suspended Avallone
for the rest of the year because this instance marked the second time he had
a weapon on campus.
During the search, Dilbeck asked Avallone, “Why would you lie to me?” In the first case, Avallone
was charged for carrying a concealed weapon in October. Another assistant principal reported investigating Avallone after a teacher reported he had a weapon on campus. That time, Avallone emptied his
pockets of everything but the weapon, so the assistant principal was forced to dig out a double-bladed
pocket knife from his back pocket. He pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor in November and received
a one-year deferred sentence, a condition of which involved him staying out of trouble with the law.
Avallone was taken to county lockup, where he posted a $5,000 bond Feb. 19. He faces up to two
years in prison and/or up to a $5,000 fine if convicted.
He has a court date set for 1 p.m. Feb. 27.

An arrest warrant service in Ponca City turned into a large drug bust
involving a teenager on Jan. 25.
Just before 5 p.m. that day, Deputy Tim Peters reported hearing over
police radio that Dakota Dorl, 19, was at the 500 block of East South Avenue, and that Dorl had outstanding warrants. Peters drove around town
and found Dorl’s Chevrolet Impala, but once he tried to initiate a traffic
stop, Dorl ran a stop sign and sped away.
Multiple patrol cars chased Dorl until he was forced to stop. First,
Highway Patrol troopers put spike strips, which caused two of the tires
to flatten. However, that didn’t stop Dorl, who kept speeding throughout
town until the car bottomed out and started leaking. At that point, Dorl ran on foot at the 900
block of South 8th Avenue until Peters caught up to him and arrested him.
During the arrest, Dorl threw a red bag on the ground. Officers picked it up and saw a Crown
Royal bag that concealed nearly 28 grams of methamphetamine, as well as nearly four grams
of marijuana, 31 ziploc bags, a metal marijuana pipe and a pan mitt with a glass methamphetamine pipe.
Dorl faces charges of trafficking methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, felony eluding,
escaping arrest and obstruction. He is on a five-year probation for a firearms conviction, which
was a felony because he had a juvenile record.
Dorl remains in custody on bonds totaling more than $75,000. He has a court date set for 2
p.m. April 5.

A catfight in Bartlesville ended with one woman in the hospital
and another in lockup on aggravated assault charges Jan. 31.
Around 10:40 p.m. that day, police officer Jared Burdick was called
to the 1600 block of South Maple Avenue in reference to a knife fight.
Once he arrived, he spoke with a woman who said Shannon Nauman, 32, hit her in the eyebrow with a cell phone then stabber her
in her left arm with a kitchen knife. The woman said she was trying
to break up a fight between Nauman and another woman when she
was attacked.
Witnesses told other officers at the scene that Nauman went to her
room and started cutting herself to make her look like the victim.
Nauman, for her part, said the woman and her mother attacked her
for no reason, adding that she used the knife in self-defense. However, she admitted making
self-inflicted cuts on her arm.
Despite this, Nauman said the woman stabbed herself, but Nauman said she was on Zoloft
and Ambien pills during the altercation.
Other people confirmed the woman’s story and said Nauman came in the kitchen and
fought with her mother.
Nauman has a previous felony domestic abuse conviction, which she received last year. In
that case, she attacked her mother by forcing her into a wooden door frame. She also has a
misdemeanor domestic assault and battery conviction from 2006 on her record.
Nauman remains in custody on a $50,000 bond. She has court set for 9:30 a.m. Feb. 22.

A Dewey man faces a felony charge
after police say he was teaching children to go down the wrong path.
Dewey Police Officer Tim Stringer
said he began an investigation on
Jan. 11 into allegations that Travis Bennett, 34, gave two underage
girls marijuana for Christmas. He
interviewed the girls at Dewey High
School, where they both said Bennett gave them marijuana on Christmas Day at the 400 block of North
Choctaw Street.
The girls also said they smoked
marijuana with Bennett that day.
On Jan. 15, Stringer interviewed Bennett at his home. Bennett
admitted giving the two girls marijuana because he said he knew
they were trying to buy it. He wanted to let them smoke under
“controlled conditions,” he said.
Realizing he was teaching the wrong lesson, he told the officer,
“I made a mistake, if it’s going to fall on my shoulders, it’s fine.”
Bennett was charged with one count of providing drugs to minors Feb. 5 and was arrested on a warrant Feb. 11. He faces up
to 10 years in prison, a fine up to $10,000 or both, records show.
In 2005, Bennett was charged with first-degree burglary after
he broke into a home in Bartlesville, where police say he intended to assault two people. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of
disturbing the peace.
Bennett also pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in
2010, receiving a one-year suspended sentence.
He posted a $5,000 bond Feb. 12 and has court set for 9:30
a.m. March 8.

Phillip Porter little more than a year

January 12, 2012, Porter was

There are times in our life when
others hurt or anger us. We sometimes
feel a strong desire to settle the score.
Proverbs 20:22 says Do not say, ‘I’ll
pay you back for this wrong!’ Wait for
the Lord and he will deliver you.”
The feelings that drive us to revenge
are powerful and strong, their
destructive nature can consume us.
The Bible responds with a “Do not...”
statement, not just a word of teaching
or advice but this verse is worded with
the strength of a command.
We would be better off to stifle the
thoughts of revenge early and quickly;
we should not even speak about it. When thoughts of revenge come we should
redirect them to thoughts of waiting on the Lord.
There are many reasons why we need to wait for the Lord to act. To wait without
giving in or compromise is a statement of faith. To wait is a testimony that we
believe in the promises of God and his commitment to us.
We are to wait, not for time to heal all wounds, or wait for an opportunity, or
wait for the sake of waiting, we are to wait for The Lord. We wait on purpose
for the one who created all things and has power to change all things, he is the
one who rules the universe and will judge the hearts of all men. We wait and we
should focus on the Lord and not our anger.
This verse ends with a conditional promise. The condition of course is not to
act on our desire to get revenge but to wait for the Lord instead. The promise is
that he will deliver. It suggest that the Lord will make things right, but it is not
specific; will the Lord deliver us from our enemies, or the situation or maybe
more importantly from ourselves and our bitterness?
As much as we need to be delivered from our own enemies we also need to be
delivered from our desire for revenge. It may be that even though God is a just
God he is more interested in changing our natures than balancing justice. He
allows circumstances in our lives to give us the challenges we need to grow. He
may sometimes deliver us not from our oppressors but from ourselves.

Under cover drug agents defuse a mini meth lab found inside a
porta-potty in the middle of a golf course in Purcell.
Staffers noticed strange sports drink bottles with chemicals inside
the porta-potty and called police.
Officers arrived and soon realized someone had been inside making
meth using the “shake and bake” method.
Three bottles were found, two of them exploded before detectives
arrived.
Agents were able to neutralize the third one without the harmful
chemicals erupting.
“If someone would have been in the porta-pot when it happened
they might have gotten hurt by the flying plastic and the chemicals,”
Purcell Dt. Cpl. Scott Stephens said.
Investigators said they have a lead on one suspect but said they believe others could be
involved.
The inside of the unit was damaged but agents were able to submit latent fingerprints to a
crime lab.

A Hominy ex-con faces more prison time after his latest brush
with the law Jan. 27.
That day, officer Jeromy Smiley went to the 1100 block of South
Regan Avenue, where he received a report that Eldridge Carrier,
49, was fighting with a woman in the presence of children. During
the altercation, Carrier swung the woman around and held a knife
to her throat, according to a witness.
He faces charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon
and domestic abuse. To make matters worse, he has six prior felony convictions dating back to 2005 on his record, according to
his rap sheet.
He was convicted in Tulsa County in 2005 of uttering a forged
instrument and received a five-year suspended sentence. The state
originally deferred his sentence, but he missed court appearances
and had issues paying fines, which led to the stricter punishment. Court records show he had
a bench warrant issued in October over unpaid fines in that case.
The next year, he was convicted of possession of controlled substances, earning a six-year
sentence. In 2010, he received two more drug and two firearms-related convictions, which
tacked six more years to his sentence.
In his most recent case, Carrier faces up to 10 years in the state penitentiary if convicted.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge Jan. 28 and posted a $50,000 bond Feb. 7.
Carrier will next appear in court at 9 a.m. March 11.

incompetent to stand trial in 2006.
Randal Wade Byus, 43, pleaded guilty to reduced charges
in May 2008 and agreed to cooperate with authorities. He
testifi ed against Gilbert Postelle, whom he said did most of the
shooting on that fateful Memorial Day.
Postelle and his family blamed Swindle for causing a
February 2003 motorcycle wreck that left the elder Postelle
with brain damage and other injuries. They went to Swindle’s
trailer looking for revenge and vowing to kill anyone who got
in their way.

In this installment of Tips From
a Trooper, I’m going to talk about a
violation that we see every day. It
is something I am sure most of my
readers have done, many times, without giving it another thought. I
doubt if most have even considered it to be unsafe, much less illegal,
but it is. The violation is passing on the shoulder, and it happens all
the time.
The car ahead of you is stopped in the lane of traffic, and you see the
left turn signal on. Its not turning because of oncoming traffic, which
it must yield to before turning, so you just slide your vehicle over to
the right, onto the shoulder, or maybe even just the widened part of
the road where the intersection is, and pass right by them. Maybe
you slowed down a little, just to be safe, or maybe not. You are in a
hurry, and don’t want to slow down to wait for traffic to clear. Doesn’t
seem like a big deal does it? Well, passing on the shoulder is illegal,
and can be a very dangerous situation!
The Statute governing this scenario is actually in the section that
states when passing on the right is permitted...it gives a few examples,
one of which is when a vehicle is preparing to make a left hand turn.
Sounds like its covered and should be legal, right? The last sentence
of this Statute is where you find the restriction for passing on the
shoulder.
It states:
The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass another
vehicle upon the right only under conditions permitting such
movement in safety. In no event shall such movement be made
by driving off the pavement or main traveled portion of the
roadway.
Statute also defines roadway for us: That portion of highway
improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular travel, exclusive
of the shoulder.
The reason for this Statute is simple, and for this exact scenario...
not only is the vehicle in front of you turning left, but the oncoming
vehicle is also going to turn left, and visibility of your vehicle is
blocked by the stopped one, which makes a blind spot, and the
potential for the oncoming vehicle to turn left in front of you, just as
you are passing the other vehicle! We work accidents where this is the
causation all the time, and they can all be prevented by obeying this
law, and practicing some patience! How much time do you think you
actually save when doing this, anyway? Next time you see someone
do it, watch and see if you don’t catch them at the next traffic light...
they really didn’t save anything, and a couple of seconds aren’t worth
risking an accident and a life.

Taulman
Pawnee County sheriffs got a bit of a surprise when they went to
Jennings to serve an arrest warrant Jan. 22.
Around 7 p.m. that day, three deputies went to the 700 block of
North Oak Street to serve a misdemeanor warrant on Paul Eugene
Taulman, 55. When they knocked on the door, Taulman opened it,
saw the officers and slammed the door in their faces, which he also
did when police tried to talk to him about the charges that led to the
warrant.
The deputies told him to open the door multiple times, yelling that
they had an arrest warrant, but Taulman refused to comply. Eventually, they broke into Taulman’s trailer, shattering the storm door,
and tried to open the front door, which Taulman was holding shut.
Whenever they finally gained entry, Taulman was standing with a hand behind his back,
concealing a gun.
When they made Taulman get on the ground, they realized Taulman’s .40 caliber Smith
and Wesson was loaded, complete with a round in the chamber, according to the affidavit.
Taulman faces charges of assault, resisting officers and failing to notify police of a concealed weapon. His misdemeanor warrant was, coincidentally, for disturbing the peace and
assault and battery. In that case, officers allege he yelled at people at a cemetery and punched
a man’s car in a rage.
He posted a $15,000 bond Jan. 23 and pleaded not guilty Feb. 5.
Taulman has a court date set for 9 a.m. March 23.

Henry “Hank” Laird, a 17-year-old Tulsa teen, was jailed Jan. 27 after
he allegedly beat his mother to death with the butt of a shotgun and then
laughed when police took him into custody.
According to Tulsa police, a warrant for Laird’s arrest was issued the
day before after Linda Laird’s parents arrived at her home to find her
bludgeoned to death at the foot of a staircase.
The parents told police that Henry Laird and a friend, identified as Josia
Sklar, fled the residence when they arrived.
Sklar was tracked to a motel and arrested at about 2 a.m. Wednesday,
while Henry Laird remained at large.
Sklar told detectives that he watched Laird repeatedly pound his mother’s head with the
butt of a shotgun until she became unresponsive. When asked how many times Laird struck
his mother with the gun, Sklar answered “about 20 times.”
Sklar stated that Linda Laird still showed signs of life following the attack, but he didn’t do
anything because he was afraid of “Hank.” That’s when Sklar placed a pillow under Linda
Laird’s head and then went to sleep in a back room, according to the arrest report.
Police received a tip the morning of his arrest that Laird was staying at a house on South
Boston Avenue. He was taken into custody without incident that afternoon.
Detectives noted that Laird was “laughing and smiling” as they led him to a patrol car.
Both Laird And Sklar were booked into jail and charged with first-degree murder.
The Oklahoma State Medical Examinator’s Office determined that Linda Laird suffered
“blunt force trauma to the head and neck” and ruled her death a homicide.

the following school related violent deaths per school year:
2009-2010: Eleven school associated deaths. Another
115 additional non death high profile incidents including
shootings, stabbings and riots.
2008-2009: Thirteen school associated deaths. Another
45 additional non death high profile incidents including
shootings, stabbings and riots.
2007-2008: Sixteen school associated deaths. Another 65 additional non death high profile incidents including shootings, stabbings and riots.
2006-2007: Thirty-two school associated deaths. Another 171 additional non death high
profile incidents including shootings, stabbings and riots.
2005-2006: Twenty-seven school associated deaths. Another 323 additional non death
high profile incidents including shootings, stabbings and riots.
2004-2005: Thirty-nine school associated deaths. Another 158 additional non-death
shootings and other incidents of high-profile violence, including stabbings and riots.
2003-2004: Forty-nine school associated deaths; 278 additional non-death high profile
incidents including shootings, stabbings and riots.
2002-2003: Sixteen school associated deaths
2001-2002: Seventeen school deaths
