A roadside vehicle and a little late night lovin’ resulted in the
arrest of a Fairfax woman.
According to the affidavit, a Kay County deputy was on patrol
Sept. 8 when he noticed a car parked on the side of the road
without its lights on. The deputy initiated his lights and pulled
in behind the car; he noticed two people inside the vehicle.
The deputy made contact with the driver. He asked him why
he was parked in the road and the man responded that he and
the passenger had “got a little hot and heavy.”
He asked the passenger for ID, but she told him that she
did not have her purse. She provided him with a name and
birthdate. The deputy ran the couple’s information through
dispatch, who advised that neither of the car’s occupants had
warrants.
The deputy returned to the vehicle and noticed that the passenger seemed very nervous and wouldn’t look at him directly.
The deputy asked the driver if he could search his vehicle. The man consented and the
deputy found an open bottle of moonshine in a lunch box in the back seat. The driver told the
deputy that he was taking the alcohol to his brothers and he had forgotten about it.
The deputy asked him to open the trunk. A purse was in the trunk, but the driver told the
deputy he didn’t know who it belonged to. The deputy opened the wallet and saw an ID belonging to Leana Darice Helzer (aka Moody), 43. The picture on the ID strangely resembled
the passenger. The officer asked her who the woman was and she told him it was her sister.
Also in the purse was a bottle containing several pills, a checkbook with unknown names on
it and an eyeglass case that contained items associated with intravenous meth use. The items
in the case later field-tested positive for meth.
After looking up a picture with the name the passenger had provided him with, the deputy
concluded that she had provided him with a false name and she was Leana Helzer.
The deputy transported Helzer to jail. She later admitted that she had lied about her name
so she wouldn’t be arrested for her warrants.
Helzer is being charged with unlawful possession of controlled dangerous substances,
obstructing an officer and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at
$10,000 and she was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 25, 2013

A Ponca City couple was arrested after a complaint of an aggressive pit bull led to the discovery of meth and drug paraphernalia.
On Sept. 11, a Ponca City police officer was dispatched to a
Ponca City residence in reference to a pit bull attacking other
dogs in the neighborhood. En route, the officer discovered that
the owner of the residence had a warrant for his arrest, the affidavit states.
When the officer arrived at the residence, he saw the owner of
the house walk out the door, grab the dog and walk back inside.
The officer made contact with two other subjects at the residence, Derek Anthony Lieb, 26, and Cara Lynn Cantrell, 24.
The officer asked Lieb if he had anything on him that he should
know about. Lieb told the officer he had a pipe and handed him
a brown eyeglasses case. Inside the bag, the officer found a glass
smoking pipe and a pen tube, both containing a white powdery
substance, which later tested positive for methamphetamine.
The officer also asked Cantrell if she had anything he should
know about. She told him she had two used syringes in her
purse. The officer found a plastic case with several small plastic
baggies containing a white powdery substance, a red straw with
a white powdery substance on it, a spoon with a piece of cotton
with a powdery substance on it and two used syringes. In one of
the plastic baggies, the officer found a small piece of cotton —
he field tested the cotton and it tested positive for meth.
Cantrell is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substances and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $1,000 and she is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 1, 2013.
Lieb is being charged with possession of controlled substances after former conviction of
two or more felonies and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at
$25,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 15, 2013.

By Lt. Jeff James
Oklahoma Highway Patrol
Well, the temperatures are
dropping, and fall is almost here,
and these things signal the start
of football season in Oklahoma! Not only have our major colleges
had their first home games, but all across the state, people are
traveling to and from football games from 4th graders on up to high
school. With that in mind, here are a few tips to make this football
season safe.
Lets start with college. Whether you are a Sooner, Cowboy, or
Golden Hurricane fan, one thing is for sure...you aren’t alone! There
are thousands of fans for each home game traveling to the
stadiums. This volume of traffic demands your consideration. First,
if you can, leave early! The closer to game time, the worse the traffic
gets, so if you can, get to the stadium early. There are plenty of
things on a game day that are going on prior to kickoff that you can
spend your time enjoying. There are usually lots of free stuff for the
kids to do that make the whole game day experience wonderful for
them as well.
Second, be patient! You WILL run into traffic, so plan ahead, and
don’t get frustrated with it. Turn on the radio, listen to the pregame hype, and remember to be a safe, courteous driver. Getting
frustrated, and getting into a hurry, can result in a traffic accident
that will delay your arrival, and could end up being very expensive,
not to mention the potential for injury.
Last, be aware that there are usually some temporary traffic
control changes on game days. Both before and after the games,
law enforcement will be at intersections controlling the traffic
lights, and making adjustments to keep the traffic flowing in the
best possible manner. Be alert and aware, and recognize when and
where these temporary traffic controls are taking place!
Now, on to the local games! The biggest thing I remember from
growing up is that parents are usually running late to get to games,
because of what time they got off work. This has not changed... we
Troopers are stopping folks who are speeding trying to get to a kid’s
ball game all the time. While we understand, (we have kids too!)
we also see all too often what happens when accidents happen as
a result of unsafe speed. If you get stopped by us, you’re going to
be even later, and possibly on the hook for a hefty fine. If you get
involved in an accident, you may not make the game at all.
Finally, when you do get there, be a good fan! Cheer your team,
don’t denigrate the other team. Use appropriate language in the
stands; remember, there are kids of all ages in the stands with you.
We Oklahomans love our football, just remember to show your
support in a positive way!
Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

29 Who has sorrow?
Who has trouble and
complaining? Who has
redness of eyes?
30 Those who linger
long over strong drink.
31 Do not look on
the wine when it…sparkles
in the cup,
When it goes down
smoothly;
32 At the last it bites
like a serpent
And stings like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see
strange things
And your mind will think
strange things.
34 And you will be
like one who lies down in the middle of the sea,
Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.
35 “They struck me, but I did not become ill;
They beat me, but I did not know it.
When shall I awake?
I will seek another drink.”
These words were sent to a son nearly 3,000 years ago
(see Proverbs 23:29-35).
Such wisdom can be cherished or trashed. Serious legal
and personal problems will likely occur if this wisdom is not
cherished. Think about it.

Fredrick Asa Tracewell, 31, was arrested for assault on a
police officer even though the officer was nice enough to give
him permission to finish his brownie and milk before being
arrested.
According to the affidavit, Tracewell’s troubles began after a traffic stop on Sept. 18 when Bartlesville police pulled
the Bartlesville man’s truck over, they discovered that his licensed was revoked.
Police asked Tracewell to step out of his vehicle and place his
hands behind his back. Tracewell had been eating a brownie
and drinking a ½ gallon of milk — an officer told him that he
could finish his brownie and milk but to try to hurry.
Tracewell tossed the half-eaten brownie back in his truck
and began to roll up his window. Police informed him not to
worry about his truck, because it was going to be impounded and would need to be inventoried.
Tracewll then locked the driver’s side door and attempted to close it; an officer stepped in
front of the door, not allowing it to close. Tracewell tried to force the door shut, but the officer pushed him off of it.
A struggle ensued between Tracewell and one of the officers. A string of expletives was
released and an officer drive stunned Tracewell with a Taser. This didn’t affect the angry
man and he wasn’t subdued until another officer arrived and placed Tracewell in handcuffs.
After being treated in the emergency room, Tracewell was taken to jail.
An inventory of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a glass smoking pipe containing a
white powdery reside, 40 small baggies, a digital scale and a package of 10 syringes.
Tracewell is being charged with three counts of assault and battery on a police officer, improper turn, failure to yield for emergency vehicle, driving with license revoked, resisting an
officer and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held on a $100,000 bond
and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 4, 2013.

Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children,
taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children
receive public assistance and their parents pay no child support,
all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

domestic a&B dus public intox dus fta child endangerment no driver’s license
A young ’un was arrested for drunken driving after he
crashed into a fence in a pasture in his mom’s vehicle.
On Sept. 3, deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s
Office responded to a Copan property in reference to a motor
vehicle collision.
According to the affidavit, when they arrived they saw a red
truck sitting on top of a large pipe that had been used as a
post to secure barbed wire.
Various broken parts of the truck, such as a side view mirror and trim pieces, were scattered around the vehicle, but
the driver was nowhere to be seen. In the bed of the truck, the
deputies saw approximately seven empty cans of beer.
The deputies contacted the owner of the vehicle. She told
them that her 18-year-old son, Benjamin Paul Hindman, had
last driven the vehicle.
Shortly after speaking with the subject’s mother, a white truck pulled up and Hindman
exited the vehicle. He told the deputies that he was the driver of the vehicle and he intended
to repair the damage to the fence once he removed his truck.
While speaking to Hindman, a deputy observed the odor of alcoholic beverages coming
from his breath and that he appeared to be unsteady on his feet.
Hindman also had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.
The Ramona man admitted to drinking “four to six” beers earlier that night. He agreed to
take some field sobriety tests, but his lack of balance resulted in a deputy placing him under
arrest.
The deputy asked Hindman if he had anything in his pockets; Hindman told him he had a
knife in his back pocket and a Percocet in his front pocket.
After finding the items in Hindman’s pockets, police transported the young man to jail.
Hindman is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance, driving under the influence by a person under 21 and malicious injury to property under $1,000. His
bond was set at $3,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 4, 2013.

The following is a list of early
warning signs that someone may
be abusive. This list was put
together by survivors of domestic
violence who reflected on the
early phases of the battering
relationship and identified some of
the early warning signs of abusers.
Someone who:
• Wants to move too quickly into the relationship.
• Does not honor your boundaries.
• Is excessively jealous and accuses you of having affairs.
• Wants to know where you are all of the time and frequently calls,
emails and texts you throughout the day.
• Criticizes you or puts you down; most commonly tells you that
you are “crazy,” “stupid” and/or “fat,” or that no one would ever want
or love you.
• Says one thing and does another.
• Takes no responsibility for their behavior and blames others.
• Has a history of battering.
• Blames the entire failure of previous relationships on their
partner; for example, “My ex was a total bitch.”
• Grew up in an abusive or violent home.
• Insists that you stop spending time with your friends or family.
• Seems “too good to be true.”
• Insists that you stop participating in leisure interests.
• Rages out of control and is impulsive.
Pay attention to the “red flags “and trust your instincts. Survivors
of domestic violence frequently report that their instincts told them
that there was something wrong early on but they disregarded the
warning signs and didn’t know that these signs were indicative of
an abusive relationship. Always take time to get to know a potential
partner and watch for patterns of behavior in a variety of settings.
Keeping in touch with your support system and participating in
good self-care can lower your risk of being involved in an abusive
relationship.

Death row execution
Anthony Banks
Anthony Banks was executed
September 10, 2013. In July,
he waived his right to seek
clemency from the state
Pardon and Parole Board.
“I can’t express the terrible
things I’ve done. I’m sorry,”
Banks reportedly said before
his execution. “To know that
I took lives hurts me. This is
justifi ed. I’ve done one good
thing in my life and that is to
become a Jehovah’s Witness.
For that, I’m eternally
grateful.”
Banks was convicted in the 1979 rape and murder of
Sun I. Kim Travis in Tulsa County. The conviction came
20 years after the crime because of newly discovered
DNA evidence. Banks had been serving a no-parole life
sentence for an unrelated killing in which he originally
had been sentenced to death. An appeal reversed that
conviction, and he made a plea bargain to avoid death.
A co-defendant, Allen Wayne Nelson, received a life
sentence.
Banks and Nelson were charged in August 1997 when
the DNA of both men was detected in evidence found on
the victim.
Banks has been on death row since November 14, 1999.

a minor charge when a fellow inmate told authorities
that Valdez had been bragging about a handgun that he
managed to sneak into jail.
After turning Valdez’ cell inside out looking for the
firearm, officers conducted a body cavity search. That’s
when officers found a loaded Derringer pistol hidden
inside Valdez’ rectum.
Investigators say Valdez was taken to a local hospital
after the gun was removed. The gun was found in operational condition and loaded
with a single round of ammunition.
Investigators say Valdez submitted to a pat-down search when he was booked
into jail, but somehow managed to be processed without passing through a metal
detector.

GREEN CARD ROMEO
Broken Arrow police arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting
two nursing home patients.
The women are 93 and 80 years old, and are patients at Franciscan
Villa in Broken Arrow. Police say what helped in their investigation is
how quickly the staff there contacted police.
Police say Uqbasilassie Zerie admitted to sexually assaulting the two
women several times over the past six or seven months. They say the
situation came to light when one of his co-workers saw something
unusual.
“She goes into the elderly patient’s room, turns on the light and sees
the suspect pulling up his pants,” said Cpl. Leon Calhoun, of the Broken Arrow Police
Department.
The staff at Franciscan Villa called police that very day, September 11, 2013.
The next day when Zerie came into work, the staff says he admitted assaulting the woman
in that room.
Officers say, when they interviewed him, he also admitted to assaulting the second victim.
Zerie’s Facebook page says he worked for St. John, the company that owns the Villa, but
he didn’t say what his job was.
Zerie’s not listed as a licensed nurse on the state’s website.
Police say that early reporting was key.
“It’s better to get out there and verify there’s not a problem than to be called after the fact
and miss a chance to prosecute someone, because there’s no evidence or he’s gotten out of
the area,” Calhoun said.
Police say the suspect is working in this country on a green card from East Africa. They
say he’s been working in the Broken Arrow area for the past two years. Now, he faces five
counts of sexual assault.

An Osage man was arrested after he attempted to elude police on what his passenger
called “one scary ride.”
On Sept. 20, an Osage County deputy was
on patrol in the town of Osage when he noticed a pickup with a defective passenger side
headlamp. The deputy activated the emergency lights on his vehicle, but according to the
affidavit, the truck picked up speed instead of
pulling over.
The deputy pursued the vehicle, which exceeded speeds of 60 mph in a 25 mph residential area. The truck continued to flee from the deputy, running several stop signs, until finally pulling into the front yard of a residence.
Once the vehicle came to a stop, the driver’s door flew open and the
driver, Scott Daniel Willcox, 25, tumbled out of the truck.
The deputy ordered Willcox to the ground at gunpoint and secured
him in hand restraints.
Willcox told the deputy, “My license is suspended and I wanted to
get my truck home so it wouldn’t get towed.” He spoke to Willcox’s
passenger who told him that he had attempted to get Willcox to pull
over, but he had refused.
“That was one scary ride,” the passenger said.
Even after Willcox tried so valiantly to save his truck from the confines of the impound lot, his truck was still towed.
After taking Willcox to jail, the deputy discovered that Willcox’s
driver’s license had been reinstated in June 2013 and was not, in fact,
suspended as the crazy driver had thought.
If he had just pulled over, his arrest and subsequent court dates
could have been avoided.
All of that crazy driving for nothing.
The deputy informed Wilcox he was under arrest and placed him
in the patrol car.
Willcox is being charged with endangering others while attempting
to elude a police officer. His bond was set at $1,500 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 24, 2013.
Crazy ride for nothin’

Registered Sex Offenders for The Area
FACT:
It is common for both child and adult
victims of sexual assault to wait some time
before telling someone about the abuse.
True. It is common for victims of sexual
assault to wait some time before telling
someone. When the person was assaulted as
a child, he or she may wait years or decades.
The reasons for this are numerous: victims
may want to deny the fact that someone
they trusted could do this to them; they
may want to just put it behind them; they
may believe the myth that they caused the
assault by their behavior; or they may fear
how other people will react to the truth.
The sex offenders
page is not a
complete listing
of all offenders in
these counties; we
will be publishing
more in each
month’s issue.

Robert Pry, a 21-year-old Arkansas man, was jailed after he
allegedly spent the night inside a Kmart huffing 16 cans of air
duster.
According to Jonesboro Police, officers were dispatched to a
local Kmart store early Sept. 1 morning after employees found
Pry asleep inside a storage room.
Officers arrived to find two feet sticking out from a cubby hole
underneath a set of stairs. Those feet belonged to Pry, who was
covered with his own urine and vomit.
Pry told officers that he entered the store just before closing time
and hid out until the employees left. That’s when he commenced
huffing 16 cans of air duster. The empty cans were found scattered
about the room where Pry was found unconscious.
Pry also stated that he borrowed a friend’s truck, drove to a
nearby Walmart, and purchased $100 worth of air duster. Officers located the truck where
they found several more empty air duster cans.
Investigators say Pry spent “all of his money” on air dusters, but wanted more. He later
told police that he was “addicted to huffing.”
Pry was taken to a local hospital before he was booked into the Craighead County
Detention Center. He was charged with commercial burglary, theft, inhaling intoxicating
compounds and failure to appear. His bond has been set at $1,700.

A Sand Springs woman was arrested in Cleveland after police discovered a baggie of marijuana in her brassiere.
Two Cleveland police officers were on patrol when they
saw a tan car with a defective passenger side taillight.
The officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with
the driver, who appeared to be very nervous, according to
the affidavit.
The officers asked the driver, Amy Michelle Frazier, 35, if
she had a criminal record. She admitted that she had been
arrested for endeavoring to manufacture methamphetamine
and possession of marijuana.
An officer asked for consent to search the vehicle and Frazier consented. As she was exiting her car, half of a white pill
fell out of her pocket. She told police it was a Seroquel that
she had taken from her friend’s house.
Frazier proceeded to empty her pockets and pulled her bra out from the bottom in an effort
to show that she wasn’t hiding anything.
Nice try Frazier. The officers heard a plastic crumple when she grabbed her bra. In the
unlikely event that the crumple could have been due to a bad boob job, police asked Frazier
if she was hiding anything in her bra.
She pulled out a clear plastic bag that contained a green leafy substance that she identified
as weed. Frazier voluntarily told police that she was trying to sell the weed for her friend.
Police placed Frazier under arrest and searched her vehicle. They found a clear plastic
baggie with a white powdery substance inside her multi-colored purse and a green straw and
piece of tinfoil with a burnt residue.
The green substance and white substance later field-tested positive for marijuana and
methamphetamine.
Frazier is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without headlights. She was released on a $2,500
recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 22, 2013.
