Knapp
A Poteau woman led police on a high-speed chase
through town because she didn’t want to get caught with
the drugs and paraphernalia that were in her vehicle.
Unfortunately for her, her tires were no match for a
police spike strip.
On October 14, a Poteau officer was working traffic at
the area of Carter and Witte when he saw a blue truck
drive by around 4:27 p.m. According to the affidavit, the
female driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, and the vehicle
was traveling 30 mph in a 25 mph zone.
The officer activated his lights, and the truck stopped
on North Saddler. The driver apparently changed her
mind, however, because she drove off and accelerated
down Sage Avenue.
The officer pursued the vehicle. The truck drove into
oncoming traffic, forcing other vehicles off of the road
and failed to stop at multiple stop signs.
Officers tried to set up a roadblock at the intersection
of Green Top Road and Gilmore, but the truck turned before the roadblock, and the chase
continued.
Officers set up a spike strip at the area of Redbarn Road and Branstetter Road. This time,
the vehicle hit the spike strip, and both of its tires deflated. The vehicle continued driving
south on Branstetter Road before eventually driving into a ditch.
The driver, Sharon Irene Knapp, 35, was removed from the vehicle and placed in handcuffs. Knapp was apparently driving with a suspended license and had several warrants for
her arrest. Inside her truck, police found a baggy containing a crystal-like substance that
field-tested positive for methamphetamine, a small digital scale, a smoking pipe, a baggy
containing 29 pills and a check, driver’s license and several cards belonging to other women.
Knapp was placed under arrest and taken to jail.
Knapp is being charged with two counts of running a roadblock, possession of a controlled
dangerous substance, attempting to elude police officer, possession of drug paraphernalia,
speeding in excess of lawful maximum limit, driving with license suspended and failure to
wear seatbelt. Her bond was set at $25,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on November 25, 214.

A Valliant woman allegedly attacked
a woman in Choctaw County when she
wanted to share her liquor and told police they were the “666” when they arrived to arrest her on October 24.
According to the victim, 37-year-old
Saundra Faye Ward came to her house
to drink. When the victim asked Ward
to share her bottle of alcohol, Ward
“went crazy,” and tried to bite and kick
the victim, the affidavit states.
A scuffle ensued, and Ward bit the
victim in several places, including the
lower back, upper arm and lower lip. A
portion of the victim’s lower lip was completely torn off.
When police arrived, they found the victim with a large amount
of blood covering her face, and they saw Ward sitting on the couch.
When an officer asked her who she was, she started cussing and said
things such as, “you know who I am mother f-----,” and “You are the
666.”
(Pretty sure you’re the one that bit off a woman’s lip, Ward!)
When the officer told her to stand up, she replied, “I’m not going anywhere.” Police were eventually able to place Ward in cuffs.
They once again asked her who she was and what had happened.
She wouldn’t say anything other than she had “fought back because
everyone was against her.”
She did, however, kick an officer. She also managed to slip out of
her handcuffs while in the patrol car. There were skid marks on the
road from where the arresting deputy had stopped abruptly to control the out-of-control Ward.
Ward is being charged with maiming, attempted escape from arrest or detention, assault and battery on police officer, prisoner placing bodily fluid on government employee and obstructing officer.
She is being held in lieu of a $150,000 bond.

A Whitefield woman told an officer she had “drank too much” after
she was pulled over in the middle of
the afternoon for her erratic driving
on October 23.
If you’re going to drink early in
the day, you should probably just
stay home the rest of the day. Day
drinking should not lead to day
drunk driving.
A Stigler police officer pulled over
63-year-old Virginia Lee Copeland
on NW Seventh at approximately
1:44 p.m.
According to the police report,
Copeland was having trouble keeping her car between the lines, and the officer saw her vehicle cross
left of center. When he made contact with Copeland, the officer was
overwhelmed by a strong odor of alcohol coming from inside the
vehicle. Copeland’s speech was also extremely slurred.
The officer asked Copeland to have a seat in his patrol car while he
checked her information and ran her driver’s license. While in the
car, day-drinking Copeland told the officer she had consumed too
much alcohol.
At least she was honest.
He placed her under arrest and transported her to the Stigler Police Department.
Copeland agreed to take the state’s breath test; she blew a .21 -- the
legal limit is .08.
The officer then transported Copeland to the Haskell County Jail,
where she was booked into a cell.
Copeland is being charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the influence, aggravated. She was released on a $1,500 bond
and is scheduled to appear in court on November 4, 2014.

Atoka man John Cody Chaffin, 27, was arrested in Coal County for
possession of meth after an officer saw him swerving across the road on
his dirt bike.
According to the affidavit, a Coal County deputy saw Chaffin riding a
dirt bike on the Coal-Atoka County line at approximately 1:52 p.m. The
deputy observed the dirt bike cross left of center, and he noticed that it
didn’t have a license plate. He stopped the dirt bike and made contact
with Chaffin, who appeared to be very nervous and was sweating profusely.
The deputy asked Chaffin if he had any weapons. Chaffin said he had
a pocket knife. The deputy patted down Chaffin for weapons, and he felt a large object in his
left front pants pocket. He asked what it was, and Chaffin replied, “It’s just a bag.” When the
deputy asked Chaffin if he could look in the bag, Chaffin told him, “Go ahead.”
The deputy removed the maroon bag from Chaffin’s pocket and immediately saw a glass
pipe sticking out of the bag. The deputy recognized it as a pipe used to consume methamphetamine. There were also three baggies containing a clear crystal-like substance in the bag.
The substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
The deputy placed Chaffin under arrest and transported him to jail.
Chaffin is being charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance. His bond
was set at $11,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on November 6, 2014.

A Wilburton man who filed a report against another man was
arrested when police found marijuana when they went to his
apartment to collect his written statement. His female friend was
also arrested for Xanax pills.
On October 18 at approximately 1:30 a.m., Wilburton police
spoke to 31-year-old Brandon J. Burdge about an assault that had
occurred. Burdge told them a young male hit him in the face and
stole stuff from his apartment.
Burdge admitted that he had been drinking, and he said he
would fill out a statement form when he was no longer intoxicated.
Police returned to his apartment around 10 p.m. to collect the
statement. When an officer knocked on the door, he smelled a
strong odor of burnt marijuana. He stepped in the doorway and
saw 35-year-old Jessica Leigh Presley, also of Wilburton, sitting
in a chair.
The officer asked both Burdge and Presley to step outside. He
asked Burdge if he had anything illegal inside his apartment.
Burdge told him there was probably a marijuana roach on the
floor somewhere.
The officer asked him for consent to search; Burdge agreed.
Police found a green leafy substance that field tested positive for
marijuana on a notebook on the floor. Under the chair where
Presley had been sitting, officers found a bag containing a green
leafy substance and several small pills. The pills were identified
as Xanax.
Burdge told police some of the marijuana was his, but the pills
were not. Presley admitted that the marijuana and pills belonged to her. Both subjects were
placed under arrest and transported to jail.
Presley is being charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, second or
subsequent offense, and unlawful possession of a controlled dangerous substance without
a prescription. She was released on a $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on
November 4, 2014.
Burdge is being charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession
of a controlled dangerous substance without a prescription. He was released on a personal

Two McAlester women are facing charges of
child neglect after children in their care consumed brownies laced with marijuana on October 29.
According to the affidavit, a Pittsburg County
deputy was dispatched to the 200 block of NW
McAlester in Alderson due to a child possibly
ingesting a narcotic. When he arrived, a woman
told him that she had taken care of her 4-yearold cousin since he was a baby, and his mom,
Amy Deann Finley, 34, wasn’t around that
much. But, she said she agreed to let the child see Finley for a few hours after school. When
the boy returned home, the woman said his eyes were puffy and bloodshot. He kept stumbling around the house and could barely keep his eyes open.
The deputy spoke to the boy and observed that his eyes were very bloodshot and he was
having trouble staying awake.
The woman took the boy to the emergency room, and he tested positive for having marijuana in his system.
The boy told the officer that he ate a brownie while at his grandmother’s house earlier that
day. When a deputy made contact with Finley, she wrote a statement saying that she knew
her son had eaten a brownie with marijuana cooked into it.
Police went to speak to the boy’s grandmother, Della Ann Hamby, 54, about the incident.
Her husband allowed police to search their home.
A deputy spoke to Hamby while officers looked through the house. She told him it was
impossible that her grandson had consumed the marijuana while at her house. However,
a deputy emerged from her home with a tub containing pipes and a green leafy substance.
Hamby admitted that the tub was hers.
Another child that was in the home later told a social worker she had also eaten a brownie
at her grandmother’s house. She too tested positive for marijuana.
Hamby is being charged with two counts of child neglect, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $50,000.
Finley is being charged with child neglect and enabling child neglect. Her bond was set at
$25,000.
They are both scheduled to appear in court on November 14, 2014.

An Antlers woman pulled over
for a defective taillight on October 18 told an officer she knew she
shouldn’t be driving, but she woke
up and needed to go get some cigarettes.
According to the affidavit, an
Antlers police officer was on patrol
around 8:06 p.m. when he saw a
vehicle turn from NE E onto NE
Second without using a turn signal. The officer also noticed that
the vehicle had a broken right taillight. He pulled over the vehicle
and made contact with the driver,
Teresa Anne Scarpello, 52.
Scarpello told him that her license was suspended.
The officer could smell the odor of beer coming from inside the vehicle. Scarpello had red, bloodshot eyes and kept saying, “I just woke
up and I knew I shouldn’t be driving.”
The smell of alcohol became stronger as the officer spoke with
Scarpello.
The officer asked her if she had been drinking. She said, “Yes, but
I’m not drunk.” When he asked when she had stopped drinking, she
told him, “Ohhh, 8 or 10 o’clock.”
The officer told her it was just a few minutes past 8 p.m., and she
said she was sound asleep but woke up and needed to go get a pack
of cigarettes.
Scarpello performed poorly on sobriety testing, and she was placed
under arrest.
Scarpello is being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under revocation. She was released on a $1,900 bond
and is scheduled to appear in court on November 12, 2014.

A Kemp woman found with a meth pipe on October 25 corrected the officer when he incorrectly identified it as a crack
pipe.
And she claimed it wasn’t hers.
According to the affidavit, a Bryan County deputy was dispatched to Highway 78 south of Highway 70 at approximately
10:58 p.m. on Oct. 25 to look for a possible female juvenile
walking down the road with a flashlight. Instead, he found
27-year-old Kristi Lynn Rhoades walking southbound. She told
him that she had gotten in an argument with her boyfriend, and
she was walking home to Kemp from Durant.
While checking her information, the deputy was advised that
Rhoades had a valid warrant for her arrest for possession of
methamphetamines.
Prior to placing her under arrest, the deputy conducted a
search for weapons. He found a glass pipe with a white residue in her pants pocket. Rhoades
told him she found the pipe while walking. He asked her why would she pick it up, and how
she could see it in the pitch black dark when her flashlight barely illuminated the ground.
She had no answer.
When the deputy referred to it as a crack pipe, she corrected him and said it looked like a
meth pipe. The deputy placed Rhoades under arrest and transported her to jail.
Rhoades is being charged with possession of methamphetamine and unlawful possession
of drug paraphernalia. She is scheduled to appear in court on November 19, 2014.

Atoka man John Richard Broadway, 50, was arrested October 19 for
driving around in his truck with a loaded gun and an open beer.
According to the affidavit, a state trooper was patrolling on state Highway 3 when he saw a vehicle traveling with a defective headlight. He
pulled the vehicle over and made contact with the driver, Broadway. He
asked Broadway for his driver’s license and insurance.
Broadway told him he didn’t have a valid driver’s license or insurance.
The trooper noticed a rife on the passenger side of the vehicle; he
asked Broadway if it was loaded. Broadway said it was, and he told the
trooper that he also had a pistol.
The trooper told Broadway to step out of the vehicle. The man had trouble getting out of the
truck, and his eyes were bloodshot and watery. He also smelled like alcohol.
Broadway admitted he had been drinking beer, and the trooper saw an open can of beer in
the man’s vehicle.
The trooper ran the vin number of the vehicle and found that the tag on the vehicle didn’t
match. He placed Broadway under arrest and transported him to jail.
Broadway is being charged with transporting loaded firearm in motor vehicle, driving a
motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, transporting an open container, driving
under suspension and failure to pay all taxes due to state. He was released on a $10,000 bond
and is scheduled to appear in court on November 5, 2014.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol
Fall is upon us, and with fall,
comes the annual increase in deer
activity and movement.
While it is true that car-deer accidents happen year round, there
is no doubt that those numbers increase dramatically in the fall
and winter months. Deer go through their mating season, called
the rut, during those months, and as winter settles over the state,
food sources become more scarce. Both of those things have deer
moving more, and when deer move, they cross roadways, making
the odds of a driver encountering them much higher.
If you’ve driven in Oklahoma for any period of time, you’ve
seen deer. You’ve seen them beside the road, running across it,
and laying dead on or near it. Car-deer accidents can be deadly
not just to the deer, but to the human occupants of the vehicles
that strike them. Since State Troopers investigate those accidents,
it makes sense that we would want to put out some tips to try and
prevent those type of accidents.
First, be conscious of the time of day you are driving. Deer
tend to move more at dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours. Since a lot
of the motoring public are going to and from work around dawn
and dusk, this is when we see most of the car-deer accidents. When
traveling at these times, make sure that you are paying attention
to not just the roadway in front of you, but the side of the road,
especially the areas between the road and the fences. If you see one
of those deer crossing signs, take heed. Those signs are put up in
areas that historically are high car-deer accident corridors.
If you are traveling in a rather open area, and there is a neck
of trees that comes up to the road, or any other type of cover, be
alert! Deer like to use cover to travel, and will use these areas to
approach roadway crossings. Be aware of your surroundings! Pay
attention to the vehicle in front of you. They may need to slow
quickly for deer, and you don’t want to rear-end them! If you do
see a deer crossing the road, or even just standing off to the side
of the roadway....reduce your speed immediately! They can be
unpredictable when spooked, and may just run right in front of
you instead of away. Use this rule of thumb: Where there is one
deer that you see, there is almost always another you don’t! Be
conscious of the ones that you may not see; just because you don’t
see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there!
Following these steps, and being a safe and courteous driver,
even to our animal friends, will greatly reduce the chances that
you will have an unfortunate and possibly harmful encounter
with them. Lets leave the harvesting of deer to the sportsmen and
women out there! As always, thanks for reading, buckle up, and
please drive safe.

When an intoxicated Checotah man thought he
was being arrested, he ran and fired a gun at an officer.
Guess what? He was arrested and taken to jail.
On October 28, a Checotah police officer came into
contact with 42-year-old Mark James Mounger on
the corner of NW Third Street and Okmulgee, according to the affidavit. As they were speaking, the
officer noticed Mounger appeared to be under the
influence of alcohol. He grabbed the man’s arm, but Mounger broke loose and took off running. The officer chased down the street after Mounger.
As Mounger was trying to make his getaway on foot, he tripped and fell to the ground. As
the officer approached him, he heard a gunshot and saw a bright flash. He then saw Mounger
throw a gun down.
The officer placed Mounger in handcuffs and picked up the 22-caliber pistol Mounger
threw to the ground.
During the arrest, the officer found a glass pipe with a white residue and a pipe with a burnt
substance that smelled like marijuana on Mounger’s person.
Mounger is being charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession
of firearm during commission of a felony, attempted escape from arrest or detention, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and reckless conduct with firearm. He is being held in
lieu of a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on January 28, 2015.

The term “outgunned” doesn’t quite do this story justice.
Derrick Mosley strolled into a discount gun store with a baseball bat, smashed a glass display case and tried to steal a firearm. Yes, he tried to rob a gun shop with a baseball bat. What
happened next? The manager pulled out a gun of his own,
pointed it at Derrick and kept him in the crosshairs until the
police arrived. Don’t be too hard on yourself Derrick. Guns in
a gun store? Nobody could have anticipated that.
A customer at Applebee’s handed a waitress her own stolen
driver’s license in an attempt to order alcohol. The culprit was
a 26-year-old woman, so she didn’t need to use a fake ID to
buy her margarita anyway, but we’ll set that aside. Kudos to
the waitress, who remained calm, told the customer she was
off to get her drink and called the police instead.
Getaway cars are just for the movies. Real criminals use
getaway donkeys. A trio of Columbian robbers in the exotic
sounding town Juan de Acosta loaded stolen rum, rice, tuna
and sardines onto Xavi, a 10-year-old donkey. It was all going to plan, but then the donkey starting “heehawing”. Loudly.
The racket alerted police to the robbery and the burglars ran.
A would-be lumberjack was casually strolling down a suburban street with an axe in hand when he happened across a
bike, which was chained around a tree. The axeman wanted
to acquire this bike for himself. So he started to chop down
the tree, blissfully oblivious to the stares of passers-by. The
bemused spectators chased him away several times, but the
lumberjack was determined. After a period of about seven
minutes, he managed to fell the tree. Unfortunately, the thief
was chased away again before he could claim his prize.
Joey Miller and Matthew McNelly concocted an ingenious
disguise before trying to break into an apartment. Well, we use
the term “ingenious” very loosely. Matthew and Joey spurned
more traditional disguises like masks or balaclavas, instead
choosing to draw on their own faces with permanent markers.
Here’s the thing about permanent marker. It’s extremely difficult to erase. So when the pair was pulled over by police after
the bungled break-in, they were easily recognizable. The stunt
earned Joey and Matthew the nickname “dumb and dumber”

Broken Bow man Isaac Wesley
Tisho Jr., 30, apparently went crazy
when he went to a residence to purchase pills and there were no pills to
buy.
According to the police report, a
Broken Bow police officer was dispatched to N. McClure due to a person
being in a home where he was not invited. When he arrived, the residents
of the house met him in the front yard
and told him Tisho had left the area.
One of the female residents said that
she had come home, and her brother informed her that Tisho had
come to their house to buy some pills. When the man told Tisho he
didn’t sell pills, Tisho became angry and allegedly told the man he
was going to come back and shoot him.
Tisho returned some time later and entered the home through
the back door, uninvited. The female resident said she told Tisho he
wasn’t welcome, and she was going to call the police.
The threat of police was enough to make Tisho leave the house
again.
Officers later found Tisho on the corner of Wallace and Adams.
Tisho smelled like alcohol, was unsteady on his feet, and had red watery eyes and slow, thick speech.
An officer placed him under arrest and transported him to jail.
Tisho is being charged with threatening to perform act of violence,
unlawful entry and public intoxication. His bond was set at $3,500,
and he is scheduled to appear in court on November 26, 2014.
