TAX MAN
A 42-year-old Broken Bow man who previously served as a tax assessor is in trouble after
being accused of messing with his own property records.
According to reports, Justin Wayne McCarrell
was an employee at the McCurtain County tax assessor’s office. He allegedly
tried to change the value of his own personal property, defrauding the county.
Reports state McCarrell logged onto the county records system. He then
reportedly gave himself a tax break of approximately $700 by taking more
than $150,000 off the value of his property.
McCarrell is being charged with destruction or falsification of records. His
bond was set at $10,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on October
19, 2023.

AROUND THE STATE
ROBBERY OVER A REFUND - Two men arrested after robbing hotel clerk at checkout
On September 5, Tulsa Police Officers responded to an Armed Robbery call around 2:30 p.m. at
a hotel near 91st and Riverside.
The 911 caller said a man armed with a knife
threatened hotel employees and forced a clerk to
hand over some money.
Through the investigation, Officers learned one
of the suspects, identified as Monroe Bird, rented
a room at the hotel and believed he was owed
a partial refund for checking out early. The dispute escalated when the other suspect, identified
as Shawdale Wright, arrived at the hotel and demanded $200 from the clerk.
When the clerk refused, Wright slashed an employee’s tire and threatened to start breaking windows. The clerk then handed over the money and the two suspects left.
Officers found and arrested Wright as he headed northbound on Riverside on
a bicycle. Officers caught Bird trying to hide behind a tree nearby.
Monroe Bird was arrested for:
- Robbery by Force or Fear AFCF (After Former Conviction of a Felony)
Shawdale Wright was arrested for:
- Robbery by Force or Fear AFCF
- Malicious Injury to Property
As the suspects in this case falls under the McGirt ruling, they will either be
prosecuted in Tribal Court or Federal Court. We will continue to work with our
Federal or Tribal partners as this case continues.
This is an arrest, not a conviction.

An Antlers man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for robbing “a young child of their innocence”.
Stetson Bruce, 34, of Antlers, was sentenced
to life in prison for engaging in sexual acts with a
child under 12 years of age.
The charges arose from investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation
and the Pushmataha County Sheriff’s Office.
On July 21, 2022, a federal jury found Bruce guilty at trial of two counts of aggravated sexual abuse in Indian Country. The crimes occurred in Pushmataha
County, within the boundaries of the Choctaw Nation Reservation, in the Eastern
District of Oklahoma.
“The defendant in this case is a depraved predator whose actions robbed a
young child of their innocence,” said FBI Oklahoma City Special Agent in Charge
Edward J. Gray. “He will always be a danger to the community and thanks to the
work of the FBI and our law enforcement partners, he will spend the rest of his
natural life behind prison bars for his horrific crimes.”
“The defendant will spend the remainder of his life in prison, a fitting penalty
for his atrocious crimes,” said U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Wilson. “Our office
stands firm in its commitment to prosecute those who victimize the innocent and
defenseless among us.”
The Honorable Bernard M. Jones, II, U.S. District Judge in the United States
District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma, sitting by assignment, presided over the hearing in Oklahoma City. Bruce will remain in custody of the U.S.
Marshal pending transportation to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons
facility to serve a non-paroleable sentence of incarceration.

MARKETPLACE
MARAUDER
A Facebook marketplace exchange of electronics
resulted in a woman being dragged by a truck back
in July.
According to reports, a woman who worked at a
local glass company met 20-year-old Asani Lewis
from Norman through Facebook Marketplace. The
two met in the parking lot of the business later at night. They agreed to meet up to
exchange a Nintendo Switch for a laptop.
The woman told police officers, however, that Lewis didn’t hold up his end of the
deal. When they went to exchange the items, she noticed that the laptop he had wasn’t
the same one he had shown her on Facebook. The woman said something about the
laptop. Lewis then got into his truck with both the laptop and the Switch. The woman
reached into the truck in an attempt to grab the Switch. Lewis allegedly backed the
truck up - the woman told police she was dragged by the truck before she hit the
pavement.
Lewis is being charged with assault, battery, or assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, grand larceny, and leaving the scene of an accident involving damage.
His bond was set at $10,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on October 4,
2023. SHANNA

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

LIFE TO GO
A Hugo man who killed his wife in 2020 will be well
over 100 years old if and when he ever sees the outside of a prison again.
Jeffrey Lyn Pierce, 74, of Hugo, was sentenced to
327 months in prison for one count of murder in the
second degree in Indian Country.
The charges arose from investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the Choctaw County Sheriff’s
Office, and the Choctaw County Ambulance Authority.
On May 23, 2022, Pierce was found guilty of murder in the second degree at trial by
a federal jury. At trial, the Government presented evidence that Pierce fatally stabbed
the victim, his wife, Ronnie Ranea Fitzpatrick-Pierce, 48, multiple times during a dispute before calling a friend, who in turn called 911. The victim sustained at least six
stab wounds to the chest, neck, and face, and died on the scene despite attempts by
paramedics to administer life-saving treatment.
The crime occurred in Choctaw County, within the boundaries of the Choctaw Nation Reservation, in the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
The Honorable Bernard M. Jones, II, U.S. District Judge in the United States District
Court for the Western District of Oklahoma, sitting by assignment, presided over the
hearings in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Pierce will remain in custody of the U.S. Marshal pending transportation to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility
to serve a non-paroleable sentence of incarceration. JESSE
