If friends don’t let friends drink and drive, then maybe Edmond
Brent Franklin, 38, needs to find better friends.
The Idabel man was arrested for his second offense of drunk driving
after police observed him driving recklessly and endangering others
while under the influence of alcohol.
On Aug. 24, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper was called to assist a McCurtain County deputy with a traffic stop on Hwy 70 in Idabel.
According to the police report, the deputy was driving northbound
on Hwy 70 when he saw a red SUV traveling southbound make a sudden U-turn and drive in front of oncoming traffic, almost causing a
collision.
He pulled the vehicle over and made contact with the extremely intoxicated driver, later identified as Franklin.
The OHP trooper made contact with Franklin and immediately smelled a strong odor of an
alcoholic beverage on Franklin’s breath.
Franklin had a very slurred speech, appeared to be falling asleep and could barely walk.
Standard field sobriety tests were attempted, but immediately stopped due to Franklin’s extreme level of intoxication and unsteadiness on his feet.
The trooper arrested the inebriated man and transported him to McCurtain County Jail.
An open bottle of Kentucky Deluxe was found on the passenger’s side floorboard.
The whiskey-guzzlin’ driver is being charged with driving a motor vehicle under the influence
of alcohol (second offense), transporting an open bottle or container of liquor and failure to
signal on turning. His bond was set at $6,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Sept.
24, 2013.

most recently arrested), defended the couple and
decided to call everyone who stated the obvious
about the couple “stupid”, “uniformed” and my
favorite “examples of the public school system in
Tulsa”. Gotta love people sometimes!

Prosecutors have filed charges
against three people after Tulsa
Police found three children
living in filth last week.
Matthew Prior and Angela
Prior each face one count of
child neglect.
Police went to their home in the
1200 block of North 76th East
Avenue on Tuesday, August 6,
2013 on a welfare check.
According to a Tulsa Police report, officers found the couple’s three children in a filthy
home, with cockroaches, rotting food and feces on the floor.
Prosecutors also charged the children’s grandmother with child neglect. According to
investigators, Janet Marie Friend, 57, is the primary caregiver of three children -- ages 5, 3
and 2.
The children were removed in February because of the filth but were returned in May.
All three are in the Tulsa County jail with bonds of more than $150,000 each. The children
are in DHS custody.

A couple of friends were taken into
custody Aug. 25 after they decided to
drink a few cold ones on a country road
and an OHP trooper discovered they
had weapons and drugs in the truck.
Zachary Pettigrew, 21, of Atoka, was
charged with two counts of possession
of a controlled substance, possession
of a firearm during the commission of a
felony, and possession of paraphernalia.
Phillip Stephens, 27, of Atoka, was taken
into custody for drug court violations.
According to the police report, a 911 call was relayed to OHP
Trooper Heath Davidson about a possible prowler on Possum
Hill Road about a mile north of Highway 7. When Davidson arrived at the location, he noticed two trucks, one in the middle
of the road with two people inside, and one parked inside the
gate of a pasture.
The driver of the truck in the road, Pettigrew, told the trooper he and his buddy, Stephens, were just talking and he owned
the property the other truck was parked on.
After speaking with Stephens, Davidson noticed a loaded
30-06 rifle and three loaded magazines in the back seat of the
truck. He also noticed a partial 12-pack of Budweiser on the
floor in the back seat. Davidson then conducted a search of the
truck and found meth and marijuana.
Pettigrew admitted the drugs and rifle were his and was
placed under arrest. Because Stephens was in violation of his
drug court probation, he was also arrested.
Both were taken to the Atoka County Jail without incident.

A traffic stop for speeding revealed some
drugs, a couple of terrible backseat passengers and an interesting choice of weaponry.
On Aug. 12, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol
trooper pulled over a car for driving 75 mph in
a 65 mph zone. When the trooper made contact with the driver, he smelled the odor of an
alcoholic beverage, the affidavit states.
The trooper asked the backseat passenger,
Michael Green, 48, if he had been drinking
alcohol. The Newcastle man admitted that he
had been drinking beer.
The trooper asked Green and the other
backseat passenger, 54-year-old Denise Keesee, of Oklahoma City, to step out of the vehicle.
After the occupants exited the vehicle, the
trooper noticed a set of nun-chucks and a
handgun holster on the floor of the vehicle.
The trooper asked Green if the holster and
ninja-approved weapon belonged to him; he
said yes.
The trooper then asked Green if he had any
firearms in the car.
Green said that he had a loaded handgun in a camo bag and that inside the bag there was also a glass pipe that contained methamphetamine. Green added that he had smoked the pipe earlier that day.
The trooper placed Green under arrest and retrieved the handgun
and glass pipe. The serial numbers on the handgun had been removed
and the residue inside the pipe field-tested positive for meth.
After removing the items, the trooper asked Keesee if she had used
meth that day. She admitted to smoking the drug out of the glass pipe.
Both subjects were transported to the Coal County Jail.
Green is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous
substance, possession of firearm after former felony conviction, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and transporting a loaded
firearm. He was released on a personal recognizance bond.
Keesee is being charged with possession of controlled dangerous
substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. She is being held on an $11,000 bond and plead no contest to the charges.

Robin Christina Covert, a/k/a
Robin Christina Sossamon, 32,
of Antlers, has pled guilty to Embezzlement Of Mail By Postal Employee.
Charges arose from an investigation by the United States Postal
Service, Office of Inspector General. Covert was indicted in July.
The Indictment alleged that on
or about June 13, 2013, Covert, a
United States Postal Service Highway Contract Carrier, did willfully,
knowingly and unlawfully embezzle a package entrusted to her and which came into her possession to be conveyed by mail, to wit: a package addressed to
“Joy Smith”, while performing her assigned duties as a Highway Contract Carrier.
The Honorable Steven P. Shreder, Magistrate Judge in the
United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, in Muskogee, accepted the guilty plea and ordered the
completion of a pre-sentence report. Sentencing will be scheduled following its completion.
The statutory range of punishment is up to 5 years imprisonment and/or up to a $250,000 fine.

Pets seldom catch much press as
it relates to vehicles, but we have
our pets in our vehicles all the
time. To many, they are a part of the family, and go with us on
trips, to run errands around town, or just out for a ride. Just as we
treat them as part of the family, we have a responsibility to them,
including doing everything we can to keep them safe while in our
vehicles.
This summer, we have been very fortunate in the temperature
department! Only a few days so far have hit triple digits, we’ve had
pretty good rain, and it has been nice. With the temperatures lower
than they have been in the last few years at this time...it could be
easy to forget that as long as the sun is shining, the temperature
inside a parked car can still rise to dangerous levels. Leaving a pet
in the vehicle for as little as 15 minutes can end up having tragic
consequences. Even when the outside temps are in the 70’s, the
temperatures in a closed up vehicle can reach the 90’s or higher. The
best solution is to leave your pet at home. If that is just not possible,
or you choose not to, make sure that your pet has water, and leave
the vehicle running with the air conditioning on. Make sure you
don’t leave your pet for long, because the AC could go out, and then
your pet is stuck in a vehicle that is hot, and is also blowing hot air!
Many people let their dogs ride in the bed of their pickup. We’ve
all seen those dogs with their face into the wind, riding in the back
of the pickup. Please remember that the bed of those pickups are
metal, and even if they are covered by a bed liner or similar product,
the temperature can heat up the bed so hot as to be extremely
painful to your pet’s paws! Again, best solution is to leave the pet at
home, but if take them with
you, use a kennel or crate. This keeps the pet up off the hot bed
of the pickup, and also eliminates the possibility of the pet jumping
out, or even the potential of biting someone who gets too close to
the truck!
Speaking of crates, they aren’t a bad idea for inside the cab either.
Ever see a dog in the lap of a driver? Obviously this is not safe, the
pet can distract the driver, or even interfere with the safe operation
of the vehicle. This puts everyone at risk, so if you are going to
travel with your pet, make sure they don’t contribute to an accident,
and keep them out of the driver’s area!
This a just a few tips. The internet has plenty more, so please
educate yourself if traveling with pets. Thanks for reading, buckle

Tips from a Trooper
TALKING TO OUR KIDS ABOUT
FITTING IN
Do your kids ever fret over the
fact that they “don’t fit in”? We all
feel this way at some point in our
lives. Being alone in a room full of
people is a scary thing. We all want
to belong; to fit in. It’s beyond
instinctive, it gives us the feeling
of safety and security–no matter
what our age. So, when our kids tell us that they don’t fit in, what
they could be saying is, “I’m scared because I don’t feel safe”.
Some kids really have a tough time fitting in for a variety of
reasons. Some kids are socially awkward, and don’t know how
to start a conversation with a peer. If your child struggles with a
physical or learning disability, chances are he/she feels isolated
from the rest of the class anyway. Whatever the reason is, simply
telling them that they really DO fit in, is not as helpful as you’d
expect.
Using God’s Word to Encourage Our Children
Being a Christian parent doesn’t make dealing with these tough
situations easier. But we DO have a resource to back up what we
tell our kids, and that’s God’s Word. When we actively listen to
the pain of our children feeling like they don’t belong or fit in, we
can do more than coach them in social skills (which may be a very
important tool). We can use God’s Word to encourage them even
in these struggles.
Psalm 139:14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and
wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul
knows it very well.
I’ve found the world’s solutions to the many painful aspects of
not fitting in, being teased, or feeling isolated, are superficial at
best and not helpful at all. I mean, sticks and stones may definitely
break my bones–but words really CAN and DO hurt me!
Instead we must remind our children that God, who created
them and therefore knows every nuance of them, has a specific
plan and purpose for their lives. That HE thinks they are wonderful
and worthy of love AND friendship.

Eric Otto Wolke, 47, was arrested on Aug. 22, for being on Achille Schools premises after
police had issued a trespass warning to the Achille man earlier that month.
According to the affidavit, Wolke had been making several people feel uncomfortable at
the school by making comments that he was going to “kill his wife and use her skull to drink
out of.”
Apparently not understanding why in the world anyone would want to keep him off of
school grounds, Wolke told a vendor that “no one could keep him off the school property.”
The school administration challenged that statement and requested a trespass warning
for the creepy-talking man man.
On Aug. 22, an Achille police officer responded for a request to assist in apprehending
Wolke. A Bryan County deputy told the officer that the banned man had been spotted walking around on the premises.
The officer made contact with Wolke and asked him why he was at the school.
Wolke explained, (apparently, trespass warning be damned), that he was hot and wanted to walk through the school
to get home.
The officer reminded Wolke about the trespass warning and that he was not allowed on school property. Wolke said
he was a taxpayer, had three kids that previously went to the school and he didn’t think that the officer had the right to
tell him he couldn’t be on school property.
The officer advised Wolke he was under arrest for trespassing and placed him in handcuffs.
While searching Wolke, the officer located several knives on his person.

Durant police executed a search warrant on Aug. 26 at a Durant residence.
Although the resident denied possessing
meth, he was arrested after police discovered marijuana, methamphetamine and
plastic baggies in the apartment.
When police arrived at the residence,
they announced their presence multiple
times, according to the affidavit.
No one answered and the door was partially open. Police entered the residence
and began a search of the apartment.
On the kitchen table, police found a red and white ice chest. Inside, there were several plastic baggies that contained a green leafy
substance. On the stove, there was a scattered green leafy residue
and a box of open clear plastic baggies.
Inside an air vent, officers found a clear sack that contained multiple baggies containing a crystal-like substance that field-tested
positive for meth.
A letter on the table was addressed to Emmanuel James Jackson.
While police were searching the apartment, Jackson entered
the residence. Police informed him of the search warrant and the
25-year-old Durant man asked them why they were searching his
home.
They told him the warrant was for methamphetamine and
showed him the search warrant.
Jackson said, “I have weed for personal use but no meth!”
Jackson was placed under arrest and refused to talk to police.
Jackson is being charged with two counts of unlawful possession of meth with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of a school,
unlawful possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within
1000 feet of a school and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $10,500.

A wise man once said, “You can tell a lot
about a person from his trash.” For one
Hugo man, the trash that he threw out led
to him being thrown behind bars.
After being informed that a Hugo residence smelled like marijuana on Aug. 15,
a Hugo police officer began to watch the
residence for a few days.
According to the affidavit, he noticed
several vehicles going to the residence
and leaving a short time later. The officer
stated that, due to his training and experience, that kind of activity could be associated with narcotics.
On Aug. 25, the officer noticed that the residents did not place their
trash out like the rest of the neighborhood for the weekly scheduled
trash pick up. The next day, the officer saw approximately six bags of
trash at the residence. To help keep the city clean of trash, both literally and figuratively, the officer loaded up the bags and took them to
the police station to check for evidence of narcotics.
In the first bag, the officer found a large amount of loose tobacco
that had been removed from Swisher Sweet cigar wrappers. He also
found marijuana seeds and stems. A green leafy substance attached
to the stem field-tested positive for marijuana.
The officer found more evidence of drug use in the remaining bags
and requested a search warrant for the residence.
Hugo police served the search warrant on Aug. 26. Inside the residence, they found more marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The resident, 33-year-old Oscar Mendoza Ramos, admitted that the items
belonged to him.
Ramos was arrested without incident and taken to the Choctaw
County Jail.
He is being charged with possession of a controlled dangerous
substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set
at $20,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 24, 2013.
