A 55-year-old Tecumseh man is being held in the Pottawatomie
County Safety Center after authorities discovered he had purchased
child porn online.
Felony aggravated possession of child pornography and and pornography- possession of juvenile pornography charges were filed
Oct. 11 against Harry Van Hopper in Pottawatomie County District
Court.
According to information filed in the case, on Sept. 26, investigators found over 100 separate images of child pornography- images of
children under the age of 18 years with their genitals exposed. Also in
Hopper’s possession were DVD’s of under-age boys exposing themselves and engaging in “lewd exhibition” and “other sexual conduct”
for the purpose of “sexual stimulation of the viewer, the defendant.”
Because the magazines Hopper purchased online were delivered through the mail, he could
face federal charges.
Hopper’s home is located across the street from elementary school and investigators reportedly found photos of the school playground also in his possession.
Hopper is being held on a $250,000 bond and his preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 13.
Hopper faces possible life in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted of the aggravated
possession of child pornography charge. The punishment for the pornography charge is not
more than 20 years in prison and/or a fine of not over $25,000.

HARRASSING PHONE CALL
A Shawnee man who had reportedly been stalking children and exposing himself to them has been arrested.
Eric Lee Lack, 22, was charged Oct.
5 with three counts of felony indecent
exposure in Pottawatomie County
District Court.
According to the police affidavit,
a woman was walking along North
Chapman around 1 p.m. Sept. 22
when she noticed a silver car following her. The driver, later identified
as Lack, stopped next to the woman,
rolled down his window and flashed
his family jewels at her and began masturbating.
The woman kept walking and went up to a house where she called
police.
Lt. Mason Wilson responded to the call and the woman met him
outside. She pointed to a silver car sitting in the middle of the road
on Wood Street and said, “That is him.” When Wilson drove over to
the car, Lack tried to drive away. He saw that the tag number was
the same as the one the woman reported to dispatch and he pulled
Lack over.
Lack told Wilson he was just trying to find his father’s home in the
area, but another officer who had responded to the scene said Lack
and his car fit the description of a person driving around stalking
children and exposing himself the week before.
The woman positively identified Lack and said he was scaring her
as he followed her and she feared for her safety.
Lack was placed under arrest for indecent exposure and transported to the Pottawatomie County Safety Center and booked. Bond was
set at $30,000 and he was ordered back to court Nov. 6 at 9 a.m.

Proverbs 22:6 says “Train
up a child in the way he
should go: and when he is
old, he will not depart from
it.”
Children have a wonderful
capacity for trust. The faith
they put in adults is unqualified, and that should humble us; we
often don’t deserve it.
Sometimes kids suffer from intentional betrayal by a trusted
adult, like former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky, recently
convicted of sexually abusing underprivileged young boys. Other
times, they are neglected by society at large, as are the 1.7 million
children with a parent behind bars. Many of these kids face enormous
obstacles, but get little notice.
The Bible affirms that children are a central focus of God.
Our national problem is not that we somehow undervalue children;
it’s that we don’t always know where to look to find the children most
in need of our help. Inmates’ children in particular get placed on
the back burner. They grow up in single-parent homes, or they get
shuffled into foster care. They are five times more likely than their
peers to live in poverty. They often endure confusion, loneliness,
depression, abandonment, social ostracism, and profound anger.
Should we be surprised if they often follow their parents to prison?
It doesn’t take much to ease the burden of an inmate’s family.
Churches—and other people of good will—can incorporate prisoners’
children into their existing programs, like VBS, youth mentoring
programs, or summer camps. They can make sure kids have the
supplies they need to succeed in school, or gifts to celebrate the
holidays; the opportunities are boundless.
If we take seriously the notion that every child has inherent worth
and deserves our society’s nurture and protection, we cannot afford
to ignore children with an incarcerated parent. Like Jesus, we must
reach out to them, and their trust will for once not be betrayed. In
turn we will discover that the blessing goes both ways: They will
teach us what it means to have faith that pleases God, faith that
presses in close, believing everything will be okay.
The Bible says

Oklahoma Highway Patrol
Fall is finally here, and with the
arrival of cooler temperatures and
the turning of the leaves, a lot of
people in Oklahoma head to the
woods to enjoy the fall hunting seasons. Every year, thousands of
people enjoy a safe and enjoyable hunting season, and proper safe
firearms handling is a big reason why. I’m going to touch on some of
these safe firearms handling tips, and hopefully, this will help insure
that we all have a safe hunting
season.
First, lets cover the four basic safety rules for firearms handling.
1: Always treat a firearm as if it were loaded! Never make the
assumption that a gun is unloaded, even if you just saw someone
unload it. Many unintentional discharges of firearms are usually
followed by someone saying, “I didn’t think it was loaded”. 2: Never
point a firearm at anyone or anything that you are not willing to kill
or destroy. Good muzzle discipline is a cornerstone of safe firearms
handling. 3: Always keep your finger (primary safety) off the trigger
and outside the trigger guard until you have made a conscious
decision to shoot. It only takes a fraction of a second to get that finger
on the trigger from outside the trigger guard when you have decided
to make a shot, so there is no reason to have your finger on the trigger
until then. 4: Always make positive target identification, be sure of
your backstop and the area around and beyond your target. This
one is pretty is pretty common sense...you shouldn’t be shooting at
anything that you don’t know what it is! Knowing what is around and
behind what you are shooting at is critical, because bullets can travel
a long, long ways, even after hitting your target in some situations. In
addition to these, I would add to keep all mechanical safeties engaged
until ready to shoot, and re-engage them when done.
A common occurrence in the field while hunting is crossing fences.
This can be done safely by handing your weapon to a partner,
crossing the fence, and having him hand both your’s and their’s over
to you before they cross. If alone, simply unload the gun, set it on the
ground, cross the fence, then retrieve the gun...and make sure you
keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction! Speaking of unloading a
gun, it is very important to do so correctly. Once you think you have
all the cartridges out of the weapon, physically and visually check
both the chamber and the magazine to make sure! When loading,
again, make sure your barrel is pointed in a safe direction! Also, if
you are hunting in an elevated stand, don’t climb up or down with a
loaded weapon!
Following these simple steps can be the difference between a
safe, enjoyable hunting experience, or a trip to the hospital or
worse! Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

The Oklahoma District Attorneys Association
encourages defeat of State Question 762, which
would remove the Governor from the pardon and
parole process on non-violent offenders. Recent
recommendations of the Parole Board relating to
early release of inmates have prompted the Association to call for a comprehensive review of
the early release process.
In the past several months, District Attorneys
have discovered serious issues with the way the
Parole Board is handling paroles. Recent consideration of an 85% inmate after serving only 4
years of a 10 year sentence raised serious questions about the recommendations. Crime victims have been told that offenders serving time
for 85% crimes (crimes involving violence) will have to serve at least 85% of the sentence
before any chance of release. That isn’t happening on all cases. Offenders sentenced to life
without parole sentence have been considered for release. Offenders facing consecutive
sentences are being paroled through the second sentence to the street. Even though this SQ
won’t impact all those situations, they cause concern for removing the Governor from any
part of the process.
“Removing the Governor from the parole process would be a terrible mistake. There
would be absolutely no accountability for those who are tasked with releasing criminals
from our prisons. And we know based on recent cases that the Parole Board is not acting
responsibly,” said District Attorney Greg Mashburn, Norman, and President of the Association. If SQ 762 is passed, non-violent offenders, if recommended by the Board for parole,
will hit the streets within days of the decision. Drug dealers, drunk drivers, child pornographers, abusers of vulnerable adults in nursing facilities and white collar criminals will all be
eligible for release without review of the Governor. No crime is victimless. It is imperative
to keep the Governor in this process as the ultimate gatekeeper.
Let’s remember why voters required the governor and the parole board to be jointly involved in this important process. They are a check and balance on each other. State Question 762 is not right for Oklahoma. “It is imperative to keep the Governor in this process as
someone who takes this task very seriously. This way the public can be assured that no one
is released from prison to our streets that shouldn’t be,” added Mashburn.

out of the Parole Process

Death row
Death row inmate
found dead in cell
An Oklahoma State Penitentiary
inmate sentenced to die for
killing three women in 2007 was
found dead by his cellmate Sept.
3.
No foul play is suspected in the
death of William Eugene Davis,
55. He was found unresponsive
about 6:35 a.m.
Davis was convicted on three
counts of fi rst-degree murder in the Sept. 4, 2007,
shooting deaths of his sisters, Tami Link, 52, and
Sheila Ellis, 54, and Link’s mother-in-law, Letannah
Bishop, 87.
Davis was subdued at the scene by his legally blind
brother-in-law, Brent Link, who disarmed and
severely beat Davis after the shootings.
Davis was found guilty by a jury in Cleveland County
in February 2010. The jury recommended a death
sentence, and Davis was sentenced to death by lethal
injection by District Judge Lori Walkley the following
month.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma
Department of Human Services to impact the huge social
problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the
child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts
order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
It’s ALL about the KIDS!
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they have a chance at a
productive life. Children have the right to get support from both parents and do not
lose this right when a parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children, taxpayers often pay the cost
of raising children. When children receive public assistance and their parents pay no
child support, all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

Deadly Hiccups
Patrick Myers, a 27-year-old South Carolina man was
jailed after he allegedly shot a friend in the face while
trying to cure him of the hiccups.
According to police, Myers and two friends were
watching a football game and drinking at his residence
when one of the men developed a case of the hiccups.
That’s when Myers allegedly grabbed a gun and
pointed it at his friend in an attempt to scare the
“hiccups” out of him.
Investigators say hiccups were the least of his friend’s
worries when the gun that was pointed at his face
suddenly went off. The 22-year-old victim died at the
scene.
Myers told detectives that the shooting was an
accident and that he thought the gun had been loaded
with “dummy rounds.”
Myers was booked into the Bell County Jail and charged with manslaughter.

What you’re saying
about this on...
Kerri J: What an idiot. He does have rights.
Keep it in his pants, that is his right. Dumbass
Lori S: Its absurd that someone actually listened
to his argument.
Dee D: get some one ur own age dude and lucky
it wasn’t my kid
Megan Q: Y’all are ridiculous. Just because
he’s a teacher it’s against the law because it was
consensual. She was the age of consent. A 16 year
old can have sex with whatever age they want
now?? Seriously y’all are totally missing the point!!
Lori B: For real?? If I were the Judge... Boot his
but out of the court room: instantly!
Stay away from my daughter!
Chris S: Seems now schools r not getting to b a
place to educate
William B: If it was my daughter he wouldn’t
have to worry about a trial or prison!
Jennifer C: What they NEED to do to solve this
is RAISE the legal age again!!! Things weren’t so
grey when WE were kids - the age was 18, all in
black and white. Didn’t matter WHO you were, the
minimum age of consent was 18 - NO IF’s, AND’s,
or BUT’s about it!!!
Kids are too irresponsible nowadays anyway to be
allowed to make that choice that young...
Coleman R: I dunno, its actually a good
argument to be made. It’s sick, yes, but a good legal
argument.
Charles B: yeah let’s break laws knowingly
and then when we get caught say they are
unconstitutional.
Jamie D: If they made that legal could you
imagine how school would be!? teachers and
students would be (beep) nonstop. Schools would
just be whorehouses. more than they are now!!
teachers would be handin out A’s For B*’s
Lacy F: lol you guys kill me with the “if it was my
daughter” hello! people your 16 year old daughter
is having sex...Stop blaming the guys all the time,
this girl is just as guilty.
Tabitha C: We don’t want to send our 16 year
old daughters to school with old perverted men
knowing it’s ok to have sex with them! Can you
imagine every naive, low self esteemed teenage girl
dating a teacher? I want to send them to school
knowing they are safe and there to learn not to
get hit on, or we might as well send them to clubs!
Ridiculous! It’s unprofessional and sick!
Angela D: I agree the age should be raised.
Here in Oregon it is mandated that you become a
sex offender if caught and if you’re over 18 seeing
someone under 18. I think It’s a great law.
Tena S: He KNEW it was illegal for a school
employee to have sex with a student and did it
anyway...PERIOD!
Jessica E: ...its never the child’s fault. They
are young, naive, immature and full of hormones.
Incapable of making an informed decision. The
adult should be held accountable for taking
advantage. Even if the teen is flirting. A teacher
should be able to say no
Brittany B: YAll say to protect ur kids from
them old perverts.... So what about when u send
them to work.. or to the store... Anywhere u go you
will have them certain ppl that go for younger girls/
guys or older girls/guys... If grades are getting
turned better by him because she is doing them
things yes that is wrong... But if it’s consensual
then it’s not really fair to charge him with rape...
She is just as guilty
Amber H: i think he was wrong all the way
and it were my child he wouldnt get away with it
nomatter his excuse thats my opinion
Jennifer V: really?????? outtaline period hes
a grown ass man and she is 16!!!! she might look
grown and maybe she was ok with it but hell no
hes a grown ass man and she is a teenage KID.. i
was mature for my age but still hell no im a 28 year
old woman now and at 16 looking back i had alot
of growing to do and had really no idea about the
world i thought i knew everything about when i was
16 maybe not “rape” but for damn sure a sex crime
and spend time he deserves to have his ass kicked
and thrown in jail. he is 100% a sexual predator.
that just really got under my skin UGH!!
A former high school coach accused of having sex with a
female student fights to have his case dismissed.
The suspect’s attorney said the state’s age of consent law
is unconstitutional.
The controversial legal fight centers on a state law
banning sexual relationships between students and
school employees.
The former educator accused of breaking that law,
Tyrone Nash, allegedly carried on a sexual relationship
with a female student at Western Heights high school.
Nash asked the court to overturn state law.
Under the current law, it would legal for the judge in the case to have consensual
sex with a 16-year-old girl, but Nash, as a former school employee, may not
have the same right.
That’s why the defense said the law should be unconstitutional.
What do you think?

A 42-year-old Wewoka man
was arrested after he got drunk
on Crown and spun another
driver out as he followed them
and then laughed to police
about it.
Jason Beauford is facing
charges of assault and battery
with a dangerous weapon, APC
while under the influence, two
counts of possession of CDS,
possession of drug paraphernalia, and transporting an open
container.
According to the police affidavit, the melee began around
midnight on Oct. 5 when a motorist called in a possible drunk
driver. The driver, later identified as Beauford, had pulled
into the Willis Quick Stop at Harvey and Highway 270 and
appeared to be very drunk.
Seminole Police Officer Michael Burnett responded to the
call and found Beauford slumped over in his red Ford pickup. The engine was running and he had his foot on the brake,
lighting up the brake lights. As he approached the pickup, he
noticed Beauford look away from him.
Burnett asked Beauford if he was okay, to which he replied
he was. Burnett could immediately smell the odor of booze
coming from the cab and he saw an almost empty bottle of
Crown Royal in the passenger floor board.
The reporting party was parked beside Beauford’s truck and
told Burnett that Beauford had turned off his lights while he
was following them and then bumped his rear bumper, causing him to spin-out.
Burnett found several pills, marijuana, and a pipe in Beauford’s pocket as he was taking him into custody. When his
stash was discovered, Beauford said to Burnett, “It’ll be alright because Alprazolam is a schedule four drug and it’s only
gonna get me a misdemeanor.”
At the Seminole County Jail, Beauford refused the state’s
test and volunteered the information he did not have a firearm
on him because he usually does. He also began laughing when
he confessed to causing the reporting party to “spin out.” He
then said he had been “hard at it” for the last seven days and
was having marital problems.
Bond was set at $10,000 and ordered back to court Dec. 6
at 8:30 a.m.

A Drumright man was taken into custody after he robbed
an adult store in Stillwater and took off with two magazines,
$150, and a new rubber girlfriend.
Jesse Allen Smith, 27, was charged Oct. 15 with robbery with
a dangerous weapon and attempting to elude police in Payne
County District Court.
According to information in the case, Smith went into the
Christy’s Toy Box on N. Perkins Rd. late Oct. 11 and threatened
the clerk with a knife. He then took the blow-up doll, the
magazines and the cash and fled.
Authorities caught up with Smith in his 1999 Ford truck at
the corner of 3rd and Perkins Rd. Smith refused to pull over
and a high-speed chase ensued. At the intersection of Jardot
and Sixth, he blew through the signal light and narrowly missed a patrol car. The chase
ended when Smith crashed his truck into a telephone pole at the end of a dead-end
street and had to be tased into submission.
A knife was recovered from the truck.
Smith was transported to the Payne County Jail and booked in. Bail was set at
$100,000.

A Wewoka teen was taken into custody after he drank
nearly a half-gallon jug of Vodka and started punching walls
and a deputy.
Bennie Joe Tiger, Jr., 19, was charged Oct. 8 with assault
and battery upon a police officer and malicious injury to
property.
According to the police affidavit, Seminole County Deputy Anthony Regian was dispatched to the 13000 block of
NS 367 Rd outside Wewoka on a call of a intoxicated male
threatening to assault his mother. When he arrived, he spoke
with the mother and she said her son, Tiger, was intoxicated
and threatening her and punching her walls.
Regian went to the back room where he saw Tiger sweating profusely and shaking, and the smell of booze filled the
room.
When Tiger saw the deputy, he began cussing at him and as he stood up from his seat,
fell back against the wall. He then leaned forward and started to fall towards the deputy,
but Regian caught Tiger before he hit the ground. Regian assisted Tiger to his room and
helped him into his bed. Tiger then started yelling and fell out of his bed and whacked his
head on the end table, so Regian helped him again into bed and he laid there with his eyes
closed as if he was going to sleep.
Regian went to talk to the mom again, but after a few minutes, Tiger got up again and
started yelling. Regian asked Tiger to lay back down again and told him he was calling
EMS to check him out.
Tiger then got into a fighting stance, clenching both his fists.
“You do not want to do this,” Regian warned. “You need to lay back down before you
hurt yourself again.”
Tiger ignored the warning and picked up a small steel night stand and hurled it at the
deputy, hitting his leg. Enough was enough and Regian told Tiger he was under arrest and
to put his hands behind his back. Tiger refused and swung at Regian as he tried to cuff
him. After a “lengthy struggle with Tiger,” Regian was finally able to cuff him and place
him in custody.
EMS checked Tiger and was then taken to jail. The ride was quiet, as Tiger had passed
out in the car.

programs, they may be substantially changed by learning and cognition,” said co-lead author Professor Derek Denton, of the University of Melbourne and the Florey Neuroscience Institute, who is renowned for his pioneering work in the field of instinctive behavior.
“Once the genetic program is operating, experiences that are part
of the execution of the program become embodied in the overall
patterns of an individual’s behavior, and some scientists have theorized that drug addiction may use nerve pathways of instinct. In this
study, we have demonstrated that one classic instinct, the hunger
for salt, is providing neural organization that
subserves addiction to opiates and cocaine.”
Deeply embedded pathways of an ancient
instinct may explain why addiction treatment with the chief objective of abstinence
is so difficult, said Denton. Liedtke said that
this might be relevant given the appreciable success of maintenance approaches
that don’t involve abstinence, like replacing heroin with methadone and cigarettes with nicotine gum or patches.
“The work opens new pathways of
experimental approach to addiction,”
Denton said.
Next thing you know, they’ll be telling
us that sugar can lead to addiction. Not
high-fructose corn syrup, of course, because we’ve all heard the commercials
about how it’s really wonderful for you.

FACT:
Most child sexual abusers use physical
force or threat to gain compliance from
their victims.
False. In the majority of cases, abusers gain access to
their victims through deception and enticement, seldom
using force. Abuse typically occurs within a long-term,
ongoing relationship between the offender and victim
and escalates over time.

Two Holdenville men were taken
into custody after they burglarized a
local liquor store downtown.
Cody Butler, 18, and Dylan Rogers,
20, were taken into custody after a
short investigation and charged with
second-degree burglary.
According to the police affidavit,
the owner of Tri-City Discount Beverage on Main called police just before
10 a.m. on Sept. 24 after he discovered his store had been broken in to.
The back door deadbolt lock was so
badly damaged he could not close the
door nor secure it.
The owner turned over surveillance
video of the crime to police where
they observed two men in a white
Ford Ranger pickup with chrome
rails on the bed pull up to the back of
the store. The two men in the video
were immediately identified as Butler
and Rogers.
Holdenville Police Officer Doug
Sipes went to Butler’s home and
asked him to meet him at the police
department for questioning. There
Butler admitted he and Rogers pried open the back door with a
tire iron.
Butler was taken to the Wewoka City Jail where he was booked
on the burglary charges. Rogers was picked up shortly thereafter.

Leftwich

Three people were taken into custody
after they assaulted a man and took his
money.
Mose Ray (B.B.) Leftwich, 28, Leesa
Dawn Smith, 21, and Tyler Anderson,
22, all of Wetumka, were charged Oct. 18
with felony first-degree robbery in Hughes
County District Court.
According to the police affidavit, Wetumka police were called just before 10 p.m. on
Oct. 10 to the 400 block of E. Frisco about
a robbery that had just taken place.
Officer Wayne Metcalf arrived on scene
and met with one of the victims. She
said Smith knocked on her door and she
opened it. Smith pushed her way in and
a man, later identified as Anderson, followed her. Shortly after that, Leftwich
entered and demanded money from the
other victim. When he said he didn’t have
any money, Leftwich hit him on the right
side of his head, pulled his wallet from his
pants and took the $78 inside.
The woman victim also told police that
Smith told Leftwich they needed to take
her with them, but the woman, fearing for
her life, told them she would not tell the
police. Smith instead took the woman’s
purse.
As they robbers left, Leftwich told the
victims he had a gun and would kill them
if they called police.
All three were picked up later and taken
to jail. Bond was set at $75,000 each.
