Take one down,
pass it around...
A drunken Oklahoma City man
showcased his fine counting skills
after a Shawnee police officer pulled
him over for drunk driving.
The officer was on patrol in the early morning hours of Sept. 8 when he
observed a silver vehicle fail to stop
at a stop sign. He pulled the vehicle
over and made contact with the driver, Lashean Ray Daniels, 39, and his
passenger, Cassandra Jackson.
According to the affidavit, the officer asked Daniels if he had consumed
any alcoholic beverages and the man replied, “I’ve had 4, 5, 6,
7, 8 beers.”
Daniels had slurred speech and was acting lethargic. The officer asked Daniels to step out of the vehicle so he could determine if Daniels was sober enough to drive.
When the driver stepped out of the vehicle, he was very unsteady on his feet. He kept struggling to keep his balance, so
the officer stopped the test for Daniels’ safety.
Daniels failed the sobriety tests and was placed under arrest
for the suspicion of DUI. Daniels agreed to take the breath test;
the test revealed that his blood alcohol level was 0.18.
His passenger was placed under arrest for public intoxication. She had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from
her person and had glassy bloodshot eyes. She admitted to the
officer that she had consumed several alcoholic beverages at
the club.
Daniels is being charged with driving a motor vehicle while
under the influence of alcohol and his bond was set at $1,500.

POINTING FIREARMS
By Lt. Jeff James
Oklahoma Highway Patrol
Well, the temperatures are
dropping, and fall is almost here,
and these things signal the start
of football season in Oklahoma! Not only have our major colleges
had their first home games, but all across the state, people are
traveling to and from football games from 4th graders on up to high
school. With that in mind, here are a few tips to make this football
season safe.
Lets start with college. Whether you are a Sooner, Cowboy, or
Golden Hurricane fan, one thing is for sure...you aren’t alone! There
are thousands of fans for each home game traveling to the
stadiums. This volume of traffic demands your consideration. First,
if you can, leave early! The closer to game time, the worse the traffic
gets, so if you can, get to the stadium early. There are plenty of
things on a game day that are going on prior to kickoff that you can
spend your time enjoying. There are usually lots of free stuff for the
kids to do that make the whole game day experience wonderful for
them as well.
Second, be patient! You WILL run into traffic, so plan ahead, and
don’t get frustrated with it. Turn on the radio, listen to the pregame hype, and remember to be a safe, courteous driver. Getting
frustrated, and getting into a hurry, can result in a traffic accident
that will delay your arrival, and could end up being very expensive,
not to mention the potential for injury.
Last, be aware that there are usually some temporary traffic
control changes on game days. Both before and after the games,
law enforcement will be at intersections controlling the traffic
lights, and making adjustments to keep the traffic flowing in the
best possible manner. Be alert and aware, and recognize when and
where these temporary traffic controls are taking place!
Now, on to the local games! The biggest thing I remember from
growing up is that parents are usually running late to get to games,
because of what time they got off work. This has not changed... we
Troopers are stopping folks who are speeding trying to get to a kid’s
ball game all the time. While we understand, (we have kids too!)
we also see all too often what happens when accidents happen as
a result of unsafe speed. If you get stopped by us, you’re going to
be even later, and possibly on the hook for a hefty fine. If you get
involved in an accident, you may not make the game at all.
Finally, when you do get there, be a good fan! Cheer your team,
don’t denigrate the other team. Use appropriate language in the
stands; remember, there are kids of all ages in the stands with you.
We Oklahomans love our football, just remember to show your
support in a positive way!
Thanks for reading, buckle up, and be safe!

What a drag
Keep your friends close
and your enemies closer,
but whatever you do, don’t
drag either one on the
ground or you may end up
in jail.
On Aug. 24, a Shawnee
police officer responded
to a Shawnee residence in
reference to a male subject dragging another man
across the ground, the affidavit states.
When the officer arrived,
he saw a man sitting in a
ditch. The man had on no
clothing besides his underwear and was bleeding from
his facial area.
The man told the officer that his friend, identified
as Guadalupe Flores, 29, had punched him numerous
times in his stomach and face and dragged him down
the street.
The officer made contact with the reporting party, who
had witnessed the ordeal.
The witness stated that he or she saw “a chubbier
male…wearing shorts with no shirt yelling and dragging
the smaller male through their yard.”
Officers searched for Flores and saw him run into the
back door of a residence. Officers found him hiding in
the bathroom and placed him under arrest.
When they arrived at the police station, Flores told police, “I’m not going in there” and “You’re not going to
make me go in there.” The man continued to struggle
with police and attempted to strike an officer and jailers
with his elbows. While jail staff tried to switch handcuffs
on Flores, he jumped up on a bench and then jumped
from the bench to the floor. Flores eventually stopped
struggling and was placed into a holding cell.
Flores is being charged with assault and battery. His
bond was set at $8,000 and he is scheduled to appear in
court on Oct. 3, 2013.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living

Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.

unsolved cases
August 23, 2009, Reverend Carol
Daniels made her weekly trip from her
home in Oklahoma City to the Christ
Holy Sanctifi ed Church in Anadarko.
Most Sundays no one attended services,
as many parishioners were elderly.
However, she didn’t miss an opportunity
to share her faith with others.
Between 10 o’clock that morning, when
Daniels arrived at the church, and noon,
when police offi cers found her body,
someone murdered Daniels by stabbing
her multiple times in the upper body. The
Anadarko Police Department requested
OSBI assistance with the case.
For months, OSBI investigative agents,
crime scene agents, criminal analysts, and Anadarko police offi cers
gathered evidence and information involving the case. Agents have
traveled across the United States following leads. Eventually, investigators
exhausted their list of leads. Even though many other murder cases have
occurred since Daniels’, her case has always remained a priority.
Little more than a year ago, OSBI assigned a well-seasoned agent
to focus solely on cold cases as an OSBI Special Investigator. With his
extensive experience in investigating violent crimes across the state and
without a formal caseload as an OSBI Agent, this Special Investigator
has helped resolve two cold cases and aided in developing viable leads
in several other cases. He has recently been assigned to help agents
investigating the Carol Daniels’ case.
The OSBI wishes every murder could be solved quickly so victims’
families can experience some level of justice. Even with today’s
advancements in forensic technology, proving a person’s guilt in a
homicide case is a formidable task when an abundance of evidence is
available. Unfortunately, some homicide cases yield little evidence and
often may lack credible information.
The OSBI’s goal in every case is to bring the guilty to justice and to
provide support to families of murder victims.
If anyone has information on the Carol Daniels’ homicide case, please
call the OSBI hotline at 1-800-522-8017.

GREEN CARD ROMEO
Broken Arrow police arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting
two nursing home patients.
The women are 93 and 80 years old, and are patients at Franciscan
Villa in Broken Arrow. Police say what helped in their investigation is
how quickly the staff there contacted police.
Police say Uqbasilassie Zerie admitted to sexually assaulting the two
women several times over the past six or seven months. They say the
situation came to light when one of his co-workers saw something
unusual.
“She goes into the elderly patient’s room, turns on the light and sees
the suspect pulling up his pants,” said Cpl. Leon Calhoun, of the Broken Arrow Police
Department.
The staff at Franciscan Villa called police that very day, September 11, 2013.
The next day when Zerie came into work, the staff says he admitted assaulting the woman
in that room.
Officers say, when they interviewed him, he also admitted to assaulting the second victim.
Zerie’s Facebook page says he worked for St. John, the company that owns the Villa, but
he didn’t say what his job was.
Zerie’s not listed as a licensed nurse on the state’s website.
Police say that early reporting was key.
“It’s better to get out there and verify there’s not a problem than to be called after the fact
and miss a chance to prosecute someone, because there’s no evidence or he’s gotten out of
the area,” Calhoun said.
Police say the suspect is working in this country on a green card from East Africa. They
say he’s been working in the Broken Arrow area for the past two years. Now, he faces five
counts of sexual assault.

Man claims black out
after abusing girlfriend
A Seminole man is in jail after he attacked
his girlfriend with the claws of a hammer.
On Sept. 14, a Seminole police officer was
dispatched to a residence on report of a male
subject holding a female hostage inside of a
vehicle with a hammer.
When he arrived, a Seminole Nation Lighthorse officer was already on scene and had
the male subject, identified as Brandon Scott
Waldon, 31, in custody, the affidavit states.
The female victim was standing next to the
driver’s side door of the vehicle crying. The
officer asked the victim what had happened. She continued crying
and looked over her shoulder in the direction of Waldon. The victim
appeared to be afraid of Waldon, so the officer asked her to go across
the street with him, out of Waldon’s view.
He asked the victim again what had happened and she told him
nothing; her body was shaking almost uncontrollably and she continued crying while still looking in Waldon’s direction.
The vicitm had puffy and swollen scratches on her face and neck
that appeared to be consistent with the claws of a hammer.
The officer told her what the reporting party had said and she
started crying harder. She told the officer that they were just arguing. She refused to fill out a voluntary statement about the events
that had occurred.
Inside the subject’s vehicle, police found a hammer sitting in the
passenger seat.
Police placed Waldon under arrest and transported him to jail.
Waldon requested to speak to an officer; he began crying and said
that he was sorry and that he would never hurt the victim on purpose. He said he couldn’t remember what had occurred because he
blacks out when he is angry.
Waldon is being charge with assault and battery with a dangerous
weapon. No bond was granted and he is being held on an order of
commitment. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 17, 2013.

Mark Gregory Valdez, a 33-year-old inmate at the
Oklahoma County Jail, incurred an additional charge
when officers found a loaded handgun hidden inside his
rectum.
According to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office,
Valdez was being held at the Oklahoma County Jail on
a minor charge when a fellow inmate told authorities
that Valdez had been bragging about a handgun that he
managed to sneak into jail.
After turning Valdez’ cell inside out looking for the
firearm, officers conducted a body cavity search. That’s
when officers found a loaded Derringer pistol hidden
inside Valdez’ rectum.
Investigators say Valdez was taken to a local hospital
after the gun was removed. The gun was found in operational condition and loaded
with a single round of ammunition.
Investigators say Valdez submitted to a pat-down search when he was booked
into jail, but somehow managed to be processed without passing through a metal
detector.

On Aug. 31, the trooper was on patrol in Seminole when he noticed a
truck swerving in the lane and off of
the roadway. According to the affidavit, the trooper stopped the vehicle on
a lane use violation and suspicion of
DUI. He made contact with the driver, Kalah Jan Summers, 46. Summers
was somewhat loopy and disoriented, according to the affidavit,
and told the trooper a multitude of stories as to why she was
driving erratically. She told him she had a flat tire, then that
she was falling asleep and very tired. She told him that she was
a cancer patient but only took medication for diabetes and depression.
She also told the trooper varying stories about her travel plans
and destination. She told him that she had a cancer treatment
and was tired and headed home which changed to going to
Walmart which changed to going to her son’s home. The trooper
made contact with the son; he told the trooper that he did not
live in Seminole and he was not planning on meeting his mother.
The trooper asked Summers if there was anything illegal in
her truck, specifically naming methamphetamine, marijuana,
cocaine and prescription pills. Summers replied no to every
question except for meth and prescription pills, to which she
replied, “There shouldn’t be.”
Summers gave the trooper consent to search the vehicle. He
found straight razor blades, a prescription bottle containing
Xanax (prescribed to an unknown person), a powdery reside
in the driver door handle, a syringe with a crusted residue, a
torch-style lighter and a crystallized rock, which tested positive
for methamphetamine.
Summers was placed under arrest. She said that her friend
that does meth also drove the vehicle and left the items there.
She also accused the trooper of planting the meth in her vehicle.
The vehicle was released to Summers’ father. He told police
that Summers lives with him and he lets her use the vehicle, but
that he hadn’t seen her in four to five days.
Summers is being charged with two counts of possession
of controlled dangerous substances and unlawful possession
of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $7,500 and she is
scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 3, 2013.

When it goes down

And stings like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see

And your mind will think
strange things.
34 And you will be
like one who lies down in the middle of the sea,
Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.
35 “They struck me, but I did not become ill;
They beat me, but I did not know it.
When shall I awake?
I will seek another drink.”
These words were sent to a son nearly 3,000 years ago
(see Proverbs 23:29-35).
Such wisdom can be cherished or trashed. Serious legal
and personal problems will likely occur if this wisdom is not
cherished. Think about it.

Robert Pry, a 21-year-old Arkansas man, was jailed after he
allegedly spent the night inside a Kmart huffing 16 cans of air
duster.
According to Jonesboro Police, officers were dispatched to a
local Kmart store early Sept. 1 morning after employees found
Pry asleep inside a storage room.
Officers arrived to find two feet sticking out from a cubby hole
underneath a set of stairs. Those feet belonged to Pry, who was
covered with his own urine and vomit.
Pry told officers that he entered the store just before closing time
and hid out until the employees left. That’s when he commenced
huffing 16 cans of air duster. The empty cans were found scattered
about the room where Pry was found unconscious.
Pry also stated that he borrowed a friend’s truck, drove to a
nearby Walmart, and purchased $100 worth of air duster. Officers located the truck where
they found several more empty air duster cans.
Investigators say Pry spent “all of his money” on air dusters, but wanted more. He later
told police that he was “addicted to huffing.”
Pry was taken to a local hospital before he was booked into the Craighead County
Detention Center. He was charged with commercial burglary, theft, inhaling intoxicating
compounds and failure to appear. His bond has been set at $1,700.

FACT:
It is common for both child and adult victims of sexual
assault to wait some time before telling someone about
the abuse.
True. It is common for victims of sexual assault to wait
some time before telling someone. When the person was
assaulted as a child, he or she may wait years or decades.
The reasons for this are numerous: victims may want to
deny the fact that someone they trusted could do this
to them; they may want to just put it behind them; they
may believe the myth that they caused the assault by
their behavior; or they may fear how other people will
react to the truth.

The following is a list of early
warning signs that someone may
be abusive. This list was put
together by survivors of domestic
violence who reflected on the
early phases of the battering
relationship and identified some of
the early warning signs of abusers.
Someone who:
• Wants to move too quickly into the relationship.
• Does not honor your boundaries.
• Is excessively jealous and accuses you of having affairs.
• Wants to know where you are all of the time and frequently calls,
emails and texts you throughout the day.
• Criticizes you or puts you down; most commonly tells you that
you are “crazy,” “stupid” and/or “fat,” or that no one would ever want
or love you.
• Says one thing and does another.
• Takes no responsibility for their behavior and blames others.
• Has a history of battering.
• Blames the entire failure of previous relationships on their
partner; for example, “My ex was a total bitch.”
• Grew up in an abusive or violent home.
• Insists that you stop spending time with your friends or family.
• Seems “too good to be true.”
• Insists that you stop participating in leisure interests.
• Rages out of control and is impulsive.
Pay attention to the “red flags “and trust your instincts. Survivors
of domestic violence frequently report that their instincts told them
that there was something wrong early on but they disregarded the
warning signs and didn’t know that these signs were indicative of
an abusive relationship. Always take time to get to know a potential
partner and watch for patterns of behavior in a variety of settings.
Keeping in touch with your support system and participating in
good self-care can lower your risk of being involved in an abusive
relationship.

abuse Awareness Month
Police trying to fi gure out who egged and toiletpapered a house in a south-central Montana town
cracked the case after fi nding a grocery bag and a
receipt in the backyard.
Livingston Police Chief Darren Raney said that
a resident reported his house had been targeted by
vandals on Aug. 29.
Investigating offi cers tracked the bag and receipt
to a Livingston store, where video from a surveillance
camera showed a group of teenage boys purchasing
eggs and toilet paper.
Raney tells the Livingston Enterprise the boys,
ages 15 and 16, were referred to the juvenile
probation offi cer.
An Ohio man has been cited for public
drunkenness and criminal trespass for a notso-great effort to commandeer a freight train in
northwestern Pennsylvania.
Police say 28-year-old Robert Nerone Jr., of
Jefferson, Ohio, somehow hopped aboard the
eastbound CSX train in Ashtabula, Ohio and moved
car to car as the train slowed to a stop in Millcreek
Township. That’s in Pennsylvania, just outside of
Erie, about 120 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Millcreek police Capt. Randy Faipler tells the
Erie Times-News that Nerone reached the train’s
main engine and banged on the windows, telling the
engineer and conductor he was commandeering the
train about 3:30 a.m.
Online court records don’t list an attorney for
Nerone, who doesn’t have a listed phone.
There are people who feel the way some motorists
park should be a crime. In this case, it was - sort of.
Police in New York State say a man wanted on a
probation violation ended up being arrested because
he parked so poorly.
A state police investigator spotted a man as he
tried to back his vehicle into a parking space at a
truck stop in Rotterdam, New York.
Police say the investigator took note of the man
because he parked crookedly, taking up two spaces
in the process.
When the man walked away, he recognized
Matthew Bergeron from previous arrests - and knew
he was a suspect in a burglary and was wanted on
outstanding warrants in a neighboring county.
He was taken into custody without incident - and
sent to jail.
That’s something you might not want to post on
Facebook.
The online message said the pot dealer would
be in a store parking lot in a black and silver Ford
Taurus for anyone who wanted to buy.
Police in Bemidji, Minnesota, went looking for the
pot dealer.
But a local paper reports offi cers didn’t fi nd
anyone.
The pot sale notice was posted on a community
for-sale page.
The man who set up the page says police asked
that the marijuana listing be left up, so offi cers could
try to catch the dealer.

Best friends or
worst enemies
A Holdenville man was taken into custody after he brandished a gun at a woman.
Rodney Smothers, 43, was charged with
possession of a firearm AFCF Aug. 30 in
Hughes County District Court.
According to the affidavit, Holdenville
Police Officer Edward Dodson responded to a possible shots fired call on Aug.
27 coming from the 800 block of S. Oak
Street. As he approached the area, he noticed a green Ford Ranger sliding up to a
stop sign. The driver then pulled the truck
into his yard and he and his passenger,
later identified as Smothers, got out.
Dodson spoke with the driver, and as he did, Smothers approached the two and introduced himself as Chicago. The driver
then told Smothers to go away.
A few minutes later Dodson got a call from dispatch saying a
woman was at the police department filling out a statement. She
claimed a man by the nick-name of Chicago had pulled a gun on
her.
Dodson got out of his patrol car and told the driver he needed to
talk to Smothers. The driver then called for Smothers, but Smothers refused to walk over to them. Smothers was standing at the
end of the truck, so Dodson walked toward him. Just then, he saw
Smothers pull something out of his waist band and put it in the bed
of the truck. Dodson aimed his flashlight into the bed and noticed a
Smith & Wesson Llama Minimax 40 pistol. He immediately placed
Smothers in cuffs.
The woman told police she was having a conversation with
Smothers when he brandished the gun and told her “We can be
friends or worst enemies.”
Smothers was booked into the Hughes County Jail without further incident. His bond was set at $7,500.

Death row execution
Anthony Banks
Anthony Banks was executed
September 10, 2013. In July,
he waived his right to seek
clemency from the state
Pardon and Parole Board.
“I can’t express the terrible
things I’ve done. I’m sorry,”
Banks reportedly said before
his execution. “To know that
I took lives hurts me. This is
justifi ed. I’ve done one good
thing in my life and that is to
become a Jehovah’s Witness.
For that, I’m eternally
grateful.”
Banks was convicted in the 1979 rape and murder of
Sun I. Kim Travis in Tulsa County. The conviction came
20 years after the crime because of newly discovered
DNA evidence. Banks had been serving a no-parole life
sentence for an unrelated killing in which he originally
had been sentenced to death. An appeal reversed that
conviction, and he made a plea bargain to avoid death.
A co-defendant, Allen Wayne Nelson, received a life
sentence.
Banks and Nelson were charged in August 1997 when
the DNA of both men was detected in evidence found on
the victim.
Banks has been on death row since November 14, 1999.
