10 | NOVEMBER 2018 MAYES COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

Nowata County Sheriff Kenny Freeman was
taken into custody October 17 by OSBI agents,
accused of embezzlement.
Reports state Freeman asked the Bartlesville
Walmart for school supplies to donate to schools
in Nowata County. The Walmart donated lunch
boxes, crayons, coloring books, etc. A Walmart
employee reported seeing those donations given
away at the Nowata County Fair, but a sign that
read “Vote to keep Sheriff Kenny Freeman” was
seen next to the supplies at the donation booth.
Freeman was booked into the Washington
County jail and released shortly thereafter on a
$2000 bond. He is scheduled to return to court on
November 19 at 9 a.m.

More than 100,000 children and youth
in the U.S. foster care system are awaiting permanent families. National Adoption
Month is a time to raise awareness about
the adoption of children and youth from
foster care.
The Children’s Bureau in partnership
with AdoptUSKids and Child Welfare Information Gateway sponsors the initiative
each November as a way to focus public
attention on the urgent need for adoptive families for children and youth
waiting in foster care for a permanent family. This year’s focus, “Partnering for Permanency,” builds on the social media theme from last year. A
special web page on Information Gateway’s website helps child welfare
professionals, prospective adoptive parents, and youth partner for permanency. The website contains resources, stories, and videos on topics such
as getting started with social media, how to build a recruitment campaign,
and how social media impacts child welfare and adoption. The website
can be found at http://www.childwelfare.gov/adoption/nam/.

moving day
Jay man Matthew Ray Cornsilk, 25, allegedly broke
into a man’s shed and tried to take some items before
being confronted by the victim’s friend on October 11.
According to the police report, a Jay officer was dispatched to a home in the 100 block of N. Main shortly
after 3 p.m. The property owner told the officer he was
in the process of moving, and when he was gone, his
friend caught Cornsilk trying to steal some stuff.
The victim said some jumper cables and some chains
were missing. He showed the officer a shed and it appeared that the lock had been pried from the frame. A
power saw, nail gun and a generator that had been in
the shed were sitting outside.
The victim’s friend said he saw Cornsilk in the victim’s
yard, so he asked him what he was doing. Cornsilk said
he was helping the victim move some stuff. The friend called the victim, who advised
that Cornsilk was not helping him.
The friend said he saw Cornsilk holding a saw and nail gun. He also advised that he
saw some jumper cables in the man’s vehicle when he drove away.
While on scene, the officer learned that Cornsilk was headed back to the location.
When he arrived, the officer told him he was being accused of breaking into a shed
and stealing some stuff. Cornsilk said he didn’t take anything.
The officer again asked Cornsilk if he had taken anything from the residence. Cornsilk was adamant that he didn’t. He explained that he used a screwdriver and broke
into the shed. He said he took a nail gun, saw and jumper cables from the shed, but
he didn’t take them from the property. He told the officer he knew it was stupid.
The officer then asked Cornsilk if he took the jumper cables or chain from the property. He said no.
During the investigation, the officer was advised that the jumper cables had been in
the back of Cornsilk’s vehicle, but they were later brought back to the scene. The man
then admitted to taking them. The officer placed him under arrest and transported
him to jail.
Cornsilk is being charged with burglary in the second degree. His bond was set at
$2,500, and he is scheduled to appear in court on October 30, 2018.

A former deputy with the Hamilton County (Kansas) Sheriff’s Department was sentenced October
10 to a year and a day in federal prison for lying
to investigators about a missing machine gun, according to U.S. Attorney Stephan McAllister.
Robert W. Doty, 60, Guymon, pleaded guilty to
one count of lying to a federal investigator. In his
plea, Doty admitted that in March 2018, he was
interviewed by an agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The agent
was investigating a report by the Hamilton County
Sheriff’s Office that an Uzi machine gun was missing from its inventory.
Doty told the agent that he had cleaned the machine gun, taken it to the range to shoot it and then returned it to the Sheriff’s office. In fact, Doty did not return the machine gun. He took it to a third
party’s house and left it there.
According to the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards
and Training, Doty’s certification as a law enforcement officer has been
revoked.

A South Carolina man was caught rubbing buttered toast all over his
neighbor’s SUV window. Seems like a foolproof plan, how did he get
caught? According to MSN, He just dropped the toast a few feet away
from the car and made his departure, causing a nearby woman to notice and call the police. The police charged the now hungry man with
“malicious damage to property” and estimated the cost of damage to
be about $1.
What’s the hottest you’ve ever been? Temperature-wise of course, because if it was in physical terms, we all know we were the hottest at our
5th grade, bowl-cut, chubs stage. But really, to what extent would you
go to cool off?
Hopefully not so far you’d get arrested, but this is exactly what a group
of four young men in Germany did. On a hot day, they decided to make
their own pool in a car. In a BMW no less. A policeman noticed a very
strange convertible driving down the road. Upon closer viewing, it appeared that the bathing-suit clad men were splashing around in the water-filled car, clearly intoxicated. Though there was no law against driving
around with a pool in someone’s car, they were probably charged for
driving without a permit. Talk about hot water.
What do you guys think about sausage? I suppose it’s better than a
hot dog, which in turn is better than bologna (which is basically giant hot
dog slices?). And no matter what, it has to be better than Lunchables
*shudder*.
No matter your opinion, sausage was a huge disappointment for this
Phoenix man. He attempted to rob two large businesses, first an Ace
Hardware and then a Safeway. He put his hand under his shirt to look
like a gun, but the cashier was not fooled and calmly said “no” to his request for money. Equally unsuccessful was his attempt to rob a Safeway,
which resulted in him being escorted out of the building. He waited a few
minutes before returning into the store to snag a small breakfast sausage
and was therefore charged with shoplifting. I guess all that failing worked
up an appetite.
Sometimes people don’t want their babies. Throughout history, these
people have found convenient ways to get rid of them. In the middle
ages, a popular solution was to leave a swaddled infant on the doorstep
of a misfortunate new parent. Worse for the child, another option was an
orphanage. In later times, parents could even put their kid in the circus
for life. The last one, I’m actually jealous of.
It might not have been this Florida woman’s goal to give away her child,
but that’s sure what it looked like. She had gone shopping at Dillard’s,
and tried to shoplift $260 worth of clothing using her baby stroller. When
a police officer followed her out to her car, she flipped out and eventually threw her baby in its little carseat at him. The baby was not injured.
The shoplifter received three charges, including “resisting a police officer
without violence”. Um. What would be violent, throwing her entire family?

A Miami woman found herself behind
bars for allegedly obstructing an officer
and then kicking him in the groin area on
October 17.
According to the affidavit, a Miami officer was dispatched to the 1100 block of
M Street NW at approximately 9:44 p.m. to
investigate a disturbance in progress. Dispatch advised that a woman at the scene
was tearing up plants and throwing stuff.
When the officer pulled up to the residence, a woman approached him and
said 34-year-old Stephanie Lynn Atkins
was “out of her head.” She explained that Atkins had made some
sexual comments toward her and threw some plants at her while
destroying the front yard.
The officer observed multiple plants and yard ornaments thrown
around the yard.
Atkins was in the driveway wearing leggings and a sports bra, but
she refused to speak to the officer until she put a shirt on. The other
woman handed her a hoodie.
Satisfied with the shirt, Atkins told the officer she got off work –
but then she stopped what she was saying, looked at the other
woman and charged her multiple times.
The officer told her to stop and she continued telling her account
of events. She said after she got off work, she came home and went
to sleep. She said the front yard was destroyed when she woke up.
While she was speaking, the officer noticed that she smelled
like alcohol. She also kept charging the other woman. The officer
grabbed her arm to stop her. Atkins then slapped his arm and tried
to go after the woman. The officer placed her under arrest.
The other woman said she didn’t want to press charges toward
Atkins. She explained the woman was staying with her while she
attended drug court.
The officer transported Atkins to jail. When the officer transported
her to the booking area, she kicked him in the groin.
Atkins is being charged with assault and battery upon police officer and obstruction. Her bond was set at $6,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on November 2, 2018.
