OSBI INVESTIGATES OFFICER-INVOLVED
SHOOTING NEAR CLAREMORE
The following update is based on an active
and ongoing investigation. The OSBI’s initial
understanding of the facts and circumstances may evolve over the course of the investigation as witnesses are interviewed and evidence is collected and analyzed.
Upon completion of the OSBI investigation,
agents will submit a report summarizing their
investigation to the office of the prosecuting
attorney who will determine whether or not to
file charges.
CLAREMORE, Okla. (October 6, 2022) – The Oklahoma State Bureau of
Investigation (OSBI), at the request of the Federal Bureau of Investigation
(FBI), is investigating an officer-involved-shooting involving officers with the
Claremore Police Department and deputies from the Rogers County Sheriff’s
Office. Based on the initial investigation, this is what is known at this time:
• The OSBI was requested by the FBI to investigate an officer-involved-shooting just before 5 p.m. on October 5, 2022.
• Bobby Joe Johnston broke into a Claremore home, accosted the female
homeowner before stealing a cell phone and the woman’s vehicle.
• Claremore police were called and located Johnston driving the stolen
vehicle.
• A short pursuit ensued before Johnston evaded the officers.
• Shortly thereafter, a crash is reported on I-44 approximately five miles
east of Claremore.
• The Claremore Police Department and the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office
respond and set up a perimeter.
• Johnston eventually emerges from a tree line and approaches law enforcement in a threatening manner.
• Two officers and one deputy fire their weapon’s at Johnston.
• Johnston is transported to Hillcrest Claremore Hospital where he died.
The investigation involves Native Americans and falls under the McGirt Supreme Court decision. The OSBI and FBI are jointly working the investigation,
which is ongoing. There is no additional information to release at this time.

6 | NOVEMBER 2022 ROGERS COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
A Florida man was arrested after allegedly storming
the field and attacking a 9-year-old boy during football
practice.
Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies arrested David
Alan Taylor, 41, last month in Pensacola.
Deputies said that Taylor’s son was taking part in
one-on-one tackling practice with another player, when
Taylor’s son was overpowered and started crying.
That’s when witnesses said Taylor ran out on the field,
put a helmet on his head, got into a football stance and
then charged the victim, intentionally hitting the boy in
the chest with the helmet.
Deputies said Taylor then grabbed the victim by the arms and pushed
him to the ground.
Witnesses said the boy was crying, but was not seriously hurt and did
not require medical attention.
Deputies said Taylor then yelled, cursed and approached the coaching
staff in an aggressive manner before he was finally stopped.
Taylor was arrested and booked into the Escambia County jail. He was
charged with aggravated child abuse and disorderly conduct, and has
since bonded out of jail.

10 | NOVEMBER 2022 MAYES COUNTY Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty
PRYOR MAN SENTENCED TO 35 YEARS IN FEDERAL
PRISON FOR SEXUALLY ABUSING TWO MINORS
A Pryor man was sentenced in federal court
for repeatedly sexually abusing two of his children for ten years, starting when they were five.
In 2020, when the two victims were adults, they
came forward to report the abuse.
U.S. District Judge Geoffrey W. Crawford sentenced Keith Duane Parnell, 50, of Pryor, to 35
years in federal prison.
“This 35-year sentence should send a clear
message to child sexual predators that law enforcement officials will aggressively pursue offenders, even when victims disclose years after
sexual abuse occurs,” said U.S. Attorney Clint
Johnson. “I am grateful to the investigative team
and federal prosecutors Reagan Reininger and
Chantelle Dial for their tenacity when pursuing
and bringing Mr. Parnell to justice.”
Judge Crawford called Parnell’s criminal acts “a terrible violation of his duty
to care for and protect his children.” He further commended the two victims
for their courage when testifying at trial and when sharing their victim impact
statements at the hearing.
In March, a federal jury convicted Parnell of three counts of aggravated
sexual abuse of a minor under 12 in Indian Country and four counts of sexual
abuse of a minor in Indian Country.
An investigation was initiated by a Pryor Police detective after one of the
victims described in detail the abuse both victims endured in a Facebook post
in August 2020. The victims were adults at the time of the post.
Parnell will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service until transfer
to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
The FBI and Pryor Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Reagan V. Reininger and Chantelle D. Dial prosecuted the
case.
A first step in helping someone who may be a victim of sexual abuse is to
contact local authorities or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.”

An El Paso, Texas, man busted into a church and absconded with the safe. Safes
are heavy, so he only got a few yards before dropping it on a neighbor’s lawn, where
he tried to crack it open. That’s when he was confronted by the home’s occupant—a
police offi cer.
Is there no honor among thieves? While two suspects were being questioned by
Ogden, Utah, police about shoplifting from a store, someone broke into their car and
stole a stereo and several other items.
How convenient! Only a few months earlier, a man from Iowa City, Iowa had his driver’s license stolen. Then who should show up at the bar where he worked as a bouncer,
but the thief brandishing the bouncer’s very own license as his form of ID.
Anthony Kenneth Mastrogiovanni was impersonating a police offi cer when he pulled
over another car for speeding. The driver quickly sussed out that Mastrogiovanni was
fi bbing since he, too, was a cop, but in his case, the kind of cop who doesn’t have to
pretend he’s a cop because he really is a cop. Mastrogiovanni was arrested for impersonating a police offi cer.
A San Francisco thief pedaled his bike up to a woman on the sidewalk, snatched
the iPhone out of her hands, and rode away. Unknown to him, the woman was in the
middle of demonstrating the iPhone’s new GPS tracking device, which worked—the
thief was captured minutes later.
Following a dispute, Craig Aylesworth, of Bithlo, Florida, allegedly tossed a Molotov
Cocktail at his neighbor’s trailer home … just as the winds shifted, sending embers on
to his own trailer. Luckily, he was arrested, since he no longer had a home of his own
to return to.
Callie Rough of Middletown, Ohio, was picked up for shoplifting from a Dollar General
store with her two young children in tow. Among the booty was a book, 101 Ways to
Be a Great Mom.
Don’t you hate it when you suff er a heart attack and think you’re going to die, so you
confess to a 17-year-old murder, only to fi nd out you’re not going to die and then get
sentenced to life in prison as a result? Yeah, so does James Washington, of Nashville,
because it happened to him.
Clive Halford thinks big! The British career criminal stole a truck and loaded it with
18 pallets of stolen nickel and copper worth around £150,000 (about $250,000). Yes,
the haul was huge—too huge. Cops arrested Halford after the truck’s suspension collapsed under the weight. Earlier, Halford had stolen a car, overloaded it, and broken its
suspension too.

WHAT’S ALL THE COMMOTION ABOUT?
A 22-year-old Grove man was taken to jail for
public intoxication on September 8. He also allegedly attacked the deputy who arrested him.
According to the affidavit, a Delaware County
deputy was working at Shangri La Resort when
he heard cussing and screaming at approximately
8:40 p.m. He also heard banging on the doors of a
business that was supposed to be closed.
While investigating the noises, the deputy heard
a woman say she needed her phone back. A man,
later identified as Caleb Michael Haidsiak, then
stumbled up a ramp and sat on a white chest. The
deputy approached the man and noticed that he
smelled like alcohol. He also had slurred speech
and bloodshot, watery eyes.
Haidsiak told the deputy he was just sitting there until he could sober up. He
also mentioned that he was going to drive his vehicle home.
The deputy asked Haidsiak how much alcohol he had consumed, and what
he and the woman were doing. The man became belligerent and told the
deputy he could leave.
The deputy arrested the man and put him in the patrol vehicle.
On the way to jail, Haidsiak used his foot to drag the deputy’s laptop to
himself. The deputy retrieved it and put it back in its place.
Haidsiak then kicked the laptop and threw himself over the console of the
vehicle, hitting the deputy on the right side of his head and causing his glasses to fall off.
Haidsiak continued to kick the laptop, so the deputy pulled over and removed the man from the patrol car. He put him facedown on the ground until
a Grove police officer arrived to assist.
After being medically cleared for arrest, Haidsiak was transported to jail in a
patrol car that had a cage.
Haidsiak is being charged with battery/assault and battery on a police officer and public intoxication. His bond was set at $5,249, and he is scheduled
to appear in court on October 19, 2022.

We often receive calls asking if there is a price to keep
someone out of our publication. The short answer to that
question is NO! OK Jailbirds has never accepted money
or favor to not publish a photo.
We hear many times from people that the arresting officer of someone at the jail told them all they have to do
is pay us money and we will not publish their photo. This
is NOT true. We feel that taking money in exchange for
not publishing an arrest photo is extortion and, as such,
should be a crime.
There are companies who do take money to remove a
person’s arrest information. OK Jailbirds never has and
never will. If an arrest doesn’t make our paper, it is only
because we didn’t receive it or we didn’t have a photo we
could match up.
Thank you and God Bless

VINITA MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN FEDERAL
PRISON FOR ATTEMPTING TO SEXUALLY ENTICE A MINOR
A Vinita man was sentenced in federal
court for attempting to sexually entice an individual he believed to be a 14-year-old boy,
announced U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson.
U.S. District Judge Claire V. Eagan sentenced John William Thomas Flechs, 37, to
ten years in federal prison followed by five
years of supervised release.
“Thankfully, an undercover officer posing
as a 14-year-old caught John Flechs before
he could reach his intended target- a teenage boy,” said U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson.
“Flechs will spend 10 years in federal prison
as a consequence of his crime.”
Starting on Jan. 15, 2021, Flechs unknowingly initiated a conversation with
the undercover officer, believing he was a minor. In Kik messages, Flechs
complimented the “teenager” and asked him to send photographs on three
occasions. Flechs further described sexual encounters he had with male relatives, introduced graphic sexual topics that would allude to sexual acts on the
boy, discussed the boy’s penis size, and asked if he had ever had anal sex.
He then suggested they meet.
Still posing as the 14-year-old boy, the undercover agreed to meet Flechs
at a skate park. Flechs was taken into custody when he arrived at the park.

Gotta go to Braum’s...
On October 7, around 9:00 p.m., officers were
called out to an armed robbery at the Valero gas
station near 69th and S. Sheridan in Tulsa.
The caller said he was cleaning the store and
preparing to close when a man, later identified
as Devion Nelson, walked in the store, pulled out
a gun, grabbed the victim, and then demanded
money.
The caller said he fought with Nelson and tried
to stop him from going behind the counter, but
Nelson pushed him out of the way. The victim said
Nelson took cash out the drawer then hit him in
the face when he could not get to the safe before leaving.
Officers quickly converged on the area and began searching for the suspect. Officers located Nelson at a Braum’s down the street and he was
taken into custody.
When Officers questioned Nelson about the robbery, he replied something to the effect of, “I did that dumb sh*t”.
Devion Nelson was arrested for Armed Robbery.

More than 100,000 children and
youth in the U.S. foster care system
are awaiting permanent families.
National Adoption Month is a time
to raise awareness about the adoption of children and youth from foster care.
The Children’s Bureau in partnership with AdoptUSKids and Child
Welfare Information Gateway sponsors the initiative each November as a way to focus public attention on the
urgent need for adoptive families for children and youth waiting in foster
care for a permanent family. This year’s focus, “Partnering for Permanency,” builds on the social media theme from last year. A special web page
on Information Gateway’s website helps child welfare professionals, prospective adoptive parents, and youth partner for permanency. The website
contains resources, stories, and videos on topics such as getting started
with social media, how to build a recruitment campaign, and how social
media impacts child welfare and adoption. The website can be found at

DOG GONE IT!
Fairland woman Micaela Renee Venis, 47, allegedly fired a gun into a residence on September
14. She told an officer she was just trying to get her
dogs back.
According to the police report, Fairland police officers were dispatched to investigate shots fired near
West Church Street at approximately 3:19 p.m. As
an officer approached west on Highway 60, he saw
the suspect, later identified as Venis, running in front
of Mr. D’s Gas Station. She had a gun on her belt.
The officer ordered her to put her hands in the air.
As he went to retrieve her weapon, she yelled, “Hey
Dude!” She then spun around and reached for her
waistband.
The officer took her gun and handed it to another
officer.
When the officer asked her about the shots being fired, she replied, “Yes, I fired
four shots into the door knob.”
The officer asked her why she did that. She told him, “Because she had my
dogs in there and wouldn’t give them back.”
Venis added that the owner of the house she shot at was “like a distant cousin.”
While speaking to the woman, the officer noticed that she smelled like alcohol.
She admitted to drinking a “24-ounce drink and a little shot.”
The officer found a small bottle of liquor on her person. He placed the woman
under arrest and grabbed a green duffle bag she was carrying. As he grabbed
the bag, he noticed it smelled like marijuana. The bag was filled with harvested
marijuana plants.
Venis told the officer that the weed wasn’t hers.
The officer went into the gas station and asked if anyone had seen the woman
in the store. A man said she had put the duffle bag down, opened the door, and
said, “There they are,” before leaving the store.
Venis is being charged with felony discharging a firearm into dwelling, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and carrying firearms while under the
influence. Her bond was set at $21,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court
on October 14, 2022.
