With Halloween approaching, JAILBIRDS DIGITAL has tips to keep your family safe while still having a spooky time!
Be aware of your surroundings
Be with a group of friends or family
Wear reflectors in the dark
Examine all treats before eating
The FDA warns that treats can be tampered with and as Halloween approaches, people are talking about the fear of fentanyl-laced candy. The FDA advises, to avoid tampered treats, check the wrapping. If anything looks unusual you should err on the side of caution and toss it. If the candy looks discolored, or if you see tiny pinholes and tears, throw it out.
But how realistic are the rumors about the fentanyl fear? According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), they are not just rumors. As early as August of this year, the DEA warned Americans that young adults are being targeted with bright colored, “rainbow” fentanyl that comes in varying shapes and colors. Sometimes it is distributed in powder form and in pill form that has a similar appearance to candy.
As many are aware at this point, fentanyl is a highly dangerous synthetic opioid. The DEA describes it as “50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.” (DEA) To put things in perspective, an amount of fentanyl comparable to 10-15 grains of salt is literally deadly. (DEA)
While news sources are considering chatter around rainbow fentanyl as just a “scare” or more of a theoretical one when it relates to Halloween specifically, (Washington Post) it is still a good idea to examine all treats before consuming them.
With the above safety tips, JAILBIRDS DIGITAL wishes you all an enjoyable, spooky Halloween and most importantly a safe one.
