Families in Stillwater, Orlando and other cities
are mourning the deaths of a school teacher
and her grandfather after a two-car collision at
the intersection of Norfolk Road and SH 51,
on the west end of Yale, at around 2:30 p.m.,
Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Investigators say that Tommy Leroy McClendon, Jr., 28, of Drumright, was driving a stolen
2010 Toyota Tundra at a high rate of speed,
north on Norfolk Road when he passed an onduty Yale police officer who was southbound
on Norfolk Road.
According to police, the officer who was not
identified in the reports, turned around to make
a traffic stop.
While the Yale officer made his U-turn, the pickup, which investigators
say was traveling in excess of 100 miles an hour, entered the intersection
of SH 51 and struck the driver’s side of a westbound 2019 Honda Passport driven by Michelle Renea Clary, 55, of Stillwater.
Two passengers in the Honda, 77-year-old Floyd Margason, Jr., and his
28-year-old granddaughter, Shelayna Renea Knott, 28, of Orlando, died at
the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
Clary was flown by LifeNet to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, where she
was admitted in critical condition with multiple injuries.
Another passenger in the Honda, a 4-year-old boy reported to be Knott’s
son, was transported to Hillcrest Hospital Cushing where he was treated
and released.
McClendon was reportedly uninjured in the crash, but a passenger in
his truck, Elexis Taber, 18, of Drumright, was ejected from the truck and
sustained multiple injuries. She was transported to St. Francis Hospital by
LifeNet where she was admitted in critical condition.
Police say McClendon fled the scene and was able to elude police in a
wooded area until he was located and taken into custody at approximately
7 p.m., after calling for help because he was cold.
He is currently in custody at Payne County Jail and is charged with twocounts of first degree murder and two counts of causing bodily injury with
no valid identification.
Knott was a teacher at Edmond Schools and school officials released
the following statement on Nov. 28, “Shelayna Knott was a dedicated
and respected teacher who was elected by her peers as the Ida Freeman
2019-2020 Teacher of the Year. She poured her heart into her profession
and spent long hours at school, willingly taking on extra duties and responsibilities in service to others. She adored her students and cherished
her colleagues. Her unexpected death is deeply felt by all who knew and
loved her.”
According to the collision report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol,
McClendon was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.

tulsa man charged in Perkins woman’s death
Attorney General Mike Hunter’s office has added a first-degree murder charge to a Tulsa man
after an investigation alleges the drugs he sold to
a Perkins woman were the cause of her overdose
death.
Noah Montague, 25, was previously arrested
and charged with two counts of possession of a
controlled substance with intent to distribute and
the unlawful use of a communication device to
commit a felony.
After an investigation by the Tulsa Police Department, authorities allege Montague sold Jamie Bear, 29, the heroin that led to her overdose
death on Sept. 10. A subsequent search of Montague’s vehicle and residence found a significant
amount of heroin and other drug paraphernalia.
Attorney General Hunter reiterated his office’s long-standing commitment
to holding individuals accountable who distribute illegal drugs.
“Drug dealers who make cruel and conscious decisions to push deadly
drugs like heroin into our communities need to be held accountable.” Attorney General Hunter said. “We have no tolerance for Montague’s callous
actions that ultimately took the life of another person. I hope family and friends
of this woman find some solace in the fact that justice will be served. My sincerest gratitude goes to the law enforcement teams who collaborated on this
case. It truly takes all of us to fight the scourge of illicit drugs.”
Assisting in the investigation and arrest were the Perkins Police Department, Tulsa Police Department and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
Officials with the Perkins Police Department found Bear unresponsive in her
apartment after an anonymous call recommended law enforcement perform
a welfare check. Agents seized syringes and a substance that tested positive
as heroin in the home.
Charging drug dealers with first degree murder became Oklahoma law
in 1989 when now-Attorney General Hunter was serving in the Oklahoma
House of Representatives. He successfully ran legislation making certain
drug-related homicides eligible for the charge.

34 Violent Criminals Arrested in Creek County
as part of Operation Fallback
Operation Executed by U.S. Marshals’ Northern Oklahoma Violent Crimes Task Force to Arrest Offenders with Outstanding Arrest Warrants
On Nov. 8, the U.S. Marshals’ Northern Oklahoma Violent Crimes Task Force finalized a
five-day operation targeting fugitives wanted
for violent criminal offenses in Creek County, announced U.S. Attorney Trent Shores. As part of
the operation, the U.S. Attorney’s Office provided
legal guidance to the task force as needed and
reviewed cases of federal interest.
The task force was divided into three teams to serve the warrants throughout
the county during the week. The task force, which includes deputies from the
Creek County Sheriff’s Office, cleared 41warrants, arrested 34 violent offenders,
and seized five firearms during Operation Fallback. Many of the violent offenders
had arrest warrants issued resulting from domestic battery charges. Methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were also found during the operation.
“Today, 34 violent offenders have been apprehended as a result of Operation
Fallback,” said U.S. Attorney Trent Shores. “Violent crime continues to be a priority for my office and the Department of Justice. Our Project Safe Neighborhoods
initiative leverages the law enforcement resources in our district to get the most
violent criminals off the streets. I appreciate the brave work performed by the U.S.
Marshals Service and the local, state, tribal and federal task force officers who
serve on the Northern Oklahoma Violent Crimes Task Force. The U.S. Attorney’s
Office remains committed to keeping Oklahomans safe.”
“This was a joint effort with the Creek County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service to provide assistance in apprehending the county’s most violent
criminals and making the community a safer place,” said Northern District of Oklahoma U.S. Marshal Clayton Johnson.
“The sheriff’s office was happy to be part of an operation that allows us to find
and arrest the people that plague our county with crime. I am grateful to U.S. Attorney Trent Shores and the U.S. Marshals for working diligently to help bring these
people to justice,” said Creek County Sheriff Bret Bowling.
The U.S. Marshals’ Mobile Command Center (MCC) was deployed to the county
to assist in the operation. Mobile Command Centers are response vehicles that facilitate the U.S. Marshals’ ability to expand command and control capabilities to a
remote locations in national emergencies or for other operations. The vehicles were
built to be easy to operate in order to allow for quick deployment with minimum
personnel. Full interoperable communications are a standard for these vehicles.
The U.S. Marshals Northern Oklahoma Violent Crimes Task Force is comprised
of members from multiple agencies across the Northern District of Oklahoma.
Members are from the Creek County Sheriff’s Office; Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office,
Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Broken Arrow Police Department, Owasso Police
Department, Quapaw Tribal Police, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Oklahoma Department of Corrections, Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office, U.S. Customs and Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives.

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty 15 | DECEMBER 2019 CREEK COUNTY
oh, danny boy!
A repeat offender was arrested in Drumright
after he allegedly led police on a high-speed
chase through Creek County on November
26.
The reason 35-year-old Danny Bryan ran?
The Tulsa man said he thought he had warrants for his arrest.
According to reports, a Creek County deputy was on duty when he saw a car speeding
down Highway 33 near 433rd West Avenue.
The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic
stop on the speeding vehicle, but the driver,
later identified as Bryan, just kept on going.
The deputy chased after the man, who accelerated to speeds in excess of 100 mph.
At one point, Bryan left the road and drove
through a yard and fence, trying to lose the
deputy.
Unfortunately for him, the deputy was hot on his trail and his antics didn’t
work. After the man had sufficiently damaged private property during his attempt to evade the deputy, Bryan turned his car back onto the highway. He
drove erratically down Highway 33 headed toward Drumright.
When they reached Drumright, Bryan pulled into a trailer park and jumped
out of his car.
Drumright officers joined the chase. After a quick pursuit on foot, the man
was taken into custody.
Passengers who Bryan had taken along on his joyride from the law were
frightened and told police they pleaded with the man to stop. Bryan had a
simple explanation for why he didn’t listen to their cries – he thought he had
warrants for his arrest.
Looking at the man’s history – bail jumping, unlawful possession of CDS,
DUI, possession of a stolen vehicle, felony eluding, and assault and battery
with a dangerous weapon – it’s no wonder that he thought that!

18 | DECEMBER 2019 Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty LINCOLN COUNTY
around the state
A New Jersey man pleaded guilty in
federal court to conspiring with others
to purchase, transport and sell more
than 1,000 box turtles that were unlawfully collected from the state of Oklahoma, announced U.S. Attorney Trent
Shores.
From May 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018,
William T. Gangemi, 26, of Freehold, New Jersey, knowingly facilitated the
purchase and transport of unlawfully collected three-toed and western (ornate) box turtles from Oklahoma to New Jersey in order to sell them for
profit. Gangemi was part of a syndicate of wildlife smugglers where protected turtles were exchanged back and forth between the United States
and China.
By smuggling the turtles, Gangemi violated the Lacey Act, a federal law
which makes it a felony to engage in the sale or purchase of protected
wildlife with a market value in excess of $350 knowing that the wildlife was
taken, possessed, transported or sold in violation of laws or regulations of
any state. In Oklahoma, the collection of both types of box turtles for commercial purposes is against the law. Box turtles reach sexual maturity at
approximately 10 years of age and have a high nest and juvenile mortality
rate. Due to these factors, the harvest of the turtles can have highly detrimental effects on populations.
“Oklahomans respect and value wildlife, and we don’t appreciate those
who would seek to exploit our vulnerable wildlife populations for their corrupt greed. Laws created by Congress to protect wildlife, like the box
turtle, will be enforced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Defendant Gangemi
flagrantly violated state and federal laws by illegally collecting and exporting box turtles to the black market,” said U.S. Attorney Trent Shores. “As a
result of the diligent investigative work undertaken by agents from the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Mr. Gangemi must now face the consequences.”
“This case is an excellent example of how state and federal law enforcement agencies work together to combat the illegal wildlife trade,” said Phillip Land, a Special Agent in Charge for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
“We would like to thank the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the U. S. Attorney’s Office for their assistance with this case. Together, we can hold traffickers accountable and protect imperiled species
for future generations.”
As part of his plea agreement, Gangemi agreed to pay $250,000 in
restitution to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and a
$100,000 fine to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for violation of the Lacey Act. The final restitution and fine amounts will be determined by the
Court at the time of sentencing, which is scheduled for Jan. 27, 2020.
Gangemi also pleaded guilty to additional federal charges for trafficking
wildlife in South Carolina and New Jersey.

Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty 19 | DECEMBER 2019 LINCOLN COUNTY
the truck is stuck
Two men were arrested in Lincoln County after an ordeal that involved some drugs, game
wardens, several stolen vehicles, and a private
field.
According to the affidavit, a man contacted
a game warden on November 10 and said he
found a black car hidden behind a tree and
some bushes one mile north of 980 Road on
3380 Road. The man said only he and his family had permission to hunt there. The property
owner told the game warden the same thing.
The game warden found the car and decided
to wait to see who was going to come get it.
He sent the car’s tag and VIN numbers to a
deputy, who advised the car had been reported
stolen.
At approximately 7:06 p.m., a truck pulled
up to the scene. The game warden revealed
himself and told the occupants to get out of the
truck. The front seat passenger was 40-yearold Bobby Kerrtiss Coffman. A backseat passenger was identified as Theodore Lee Hermes
Jr., 45. A woman was also in the car.
The meeting ended with Coffman running
away from the scene, and Hermes jumping into
the front seat, driving away with the woman.
He wrecked the truck a short time later and
they fled on food.
The woman turned herself in and said Hermes made her leave the scene.
She said Hermes asked them to help him get a truck that was stuck in the
woods, so they drove the black car in the area and went to get the stuck
truck in Marley’s vehicle. They couldn’t get it out, so they returned to the
car when they were stopped by the game warden.
When Coffman was arrested, he had a gun and some baggies containing a white crystal substance in his possession.
Hermes was later found unconscious in the woods with an AR-15 rifle,
a white crystal substance, a green leafy substance and more than $2,000
in cash.
Coffman is being charged with aggravated trafficking in illegal drugs,
possession of firearm after former felony conviction and possession of firearm during commission of a felony. His bond was set at $50,000,

playing with fire
Guthrie man Michael Ray Hemby Jr., 42,
was put in jail after a fire he started on November 19 damaged some property and destroyed a car.
According to the police report, a Logan
County deputy was dispatched to a grass fire
at the corner of Chestnut and Brown Avenue
shortly after 3 p.m. The fire was apparently
started in a burn barrel behind a mobile home
in the 1300 block of South Chestnut. When
the deputy arrived on scene, the barrel was
still smoking.
Hemby lived at the residence.
Deputies spoke to one of Hemby’s neighbors, who said Hemby started a fire in the
burn barrel earlier that morning. Some grass caught caught on fire, but Hemby was able to put out the flames. He later started another fire in the burn
barrel, which caused the large grass fire.
Deputies found Hemby, who said he didn’t mean for the fire to happen. He
showed them some minor burns he had on his wrist and toe. He explained
that he started the first fire but put it out when some grass caught fire. When
he started the second fire, he said he didn’t mean for it to get out of hand. He
told the deputies that he tried everything he could to put it out.
The fire burned an approximate 25 acres, destroyed a Ford Thunderbird
that belonged to Hemby’s neighbor, and burned up some hay and fence material.
Hemby was booked into jail on a complaint of third-degree arson, but is
being charged with acts resulting in gross injury. His bond was set at $5,000,
and he is scheduled to appear in court on December 12, 2019.

Police are searching for a man who walked into a bank in Nebraska this week
and tried to open a checking account with a fake $1 million bill. Staff at the Pinnacle Bank branch in Lincoln reported the incident to police. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that bank employees say the man was adamant that the bill
was real despite tellers’ attempts to convince him otherwise. The man eventually left with the bill, but without a new account. Police are reviewing surveillance
video to try to identify the man. Police say they want to check on his welfare and
make sure he was not the victim of a crime. The largest denomination note ever
issued for public circulation was the $10,000 bill.
A Florida judge got to see more evidence than he expected when an accused
woman flashed her breasts in court. Susan Surrette, 54, was arrested for disorderly intoxication in Fort Lauderdale. She appeared in a Broward County bond
court via a video feed, NBC Miami reports. At one point during the hearing,
Judge John Hurley asked Surrette what she did for a living. She replied that she
worked as an escort and porn star under the name “Kayla Kupcakes.” During
the hearing, Surrette alleged she was the victim of police brutality and lifted up
her shirt to offer proof, according to WPTV. After her visual demonstration, Surrette told the judge she has a mental condition. Her attorney then told the
judge: “She’s somebody that needs help. She’s not going to get the help that
she needs at the jail,” according to WPLG. The judge ordered Surrette to pay
$100 bond and undergo a mental evaluation. Under the name Kayla Kupcakes,
Surrette has appeared in numerous adult films since 1998, including “Private
Stuffers 1,” “Sexcretaries” and “Mature Thunder Buns 1.”
When police in Largo, Florida, arrested Jeffrey Forrest Poole on charges of
violently resisting a police officer, the authorities made sure to list things like
his age, weight and address in his arrest report. Officers also included an alias
that Poole has allegedly used in the past ― and it’s pretty awesome, as well
as NSFW. Police were called to the 37-year-old suspect’s home on a reported domestic disturbance. When the officer arrived, according to the criminal
complaint, Poole exited his home and said, “I will beat every cop’s ass!” Then
Poole “raised his right fist and began to extend it towards my face in an attempt to strike me,” the arresting officer wrote, according to The Smoking Gun.
Since Poole was arrested and taken to the Pinellas County Jail, it is highly
unlikely he made good on his ass-kicking promise. Poole was charged with
assaulting a police officer and violently resisting a police officer. What makes
this case interesting beyond Pinellas County is one tiny detail: The criminal alias
Poole has previously used, one “Dickface Johnson.” That name showed up
because Poole was either asked if he had any alias or a record on file under that
name, according to brobible.com.
You know when you’re in an art gallery and you decide to steal one of the
paintings off the wall and then you can’t find a way to jam it into your sweatshirt because it’s a painting and large rectangular paintings don’t belong inside
sweatshirts? Hate it when that happens! Well, this art thief ran into a similar
problem. Luckily, the piece was recovered by gallery staff before the suspect
could escape with it. However, the would-be thief is still on the lam. Police in
the U.K. have released surveillance video in the hopes that viewers will be able
to help locate him. Probably won’t be difficult, given his general difficulty with
the concept of hiding.
