WHO’S LAUGHING NOW?
A 23-year-old Idabel man is facing charges
of assault after he allegedly broke an officer’s
arm on October 25.
According to the affidavit, Idabel officers
were alerted that Deondrae Michael Jones
was at a gas station in the 200 block of North
Central Avenue at approximately 10:20 p.m.
Jones had several active warrants for his arrest.
Officers went to the scene and stationed
themselves at all routes of escape, since
Jones was known to run from police. One of
the officers saw Jones inside the store, so he
tried to make contact with the man. Jones
looked at the officer, then took off running.
The officer and another chased after the
man. They caught up to him, but Jones resisted and punched the officer in
the arm. The officer immediately said he couldn’t feel his arm.
Jones was able to escape the scene.
The officer was transported to the hospital, where he was treated for three
fractures in his left arm.
On October 26, officers were advised that the suspect was hiding in the
back bedroom of a trailer in Fairview Trailer Park. They went to the residence
and found Jones hiding behind a futon in the far west bedroom of the trailer.
As they placed the man under arrest, Jones told them, “I didn’t even touch
him.”
The man was transported to jail, where he later joked about assaulting the
officer.
Jones is being charged with aggravated assault and battery upon a peace
officer. His bond was initially set at $50,000 but later revoked. An outstanding
warrant was issued for his arrest, and he is scheduled to appear in court on
November 21, 2019.

Police are searching for a man who walked into a bank in Nebraska this week
and tried to open a checking account with a fake $1 million bill. Staff at the Pinnacle Bank branch in Lincoln reported the incident to police. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that bank employees say the man was adamant that the bill
was real despite tellers’ attempts to convince him otherwise. The man eventually left with the bill, but without a new account. Police are reviewing surveillance
video to try to identify the man. Police say they want to check on his welfare and
make sure he was not the victim of a crime. The largest denomination note ever
issued for public circulation was the $10,000 bill.
A Florida judge got to see more evidence than he expected when an accused
woman flashed her breasts in court. Susan Surrette, 54, was arrested for disorderly intoxication in Fort Lauderdale. She appeared in a Broward County bond
court via a video feed, NBC Miami reports. At one point during the hearing,
Judge John Hurley asked Surrette what she did for a living. She replied that she
worked as an escort and porn star under the name “Kayla Kupcakes.” During
the hearing, Surrette alleged she was the victim of police brutality and lifted up
her shirt to offer proof, according to WPTV. After her visual demonstration, Surrette told the judge she has a mental condition. Her attorney then told the
judge: “She’s somebody that needs help. She’s not going to get the help that
she needs at the jail,” according to WPLG. The judge ordered Surrette to pay
$100 bond and undergo a mental evaluation. Under the name Kayla Kupcakes,
Surrette has appeared in numerous adult films since 1998, including “Private
Stuffers 1,” “Sexcretaries” and “Mature Thunder Buns 1.”
When police in Largo, Florida, arrested Jeffrey Forrest Poole on charges of
violently resisting a police officer, the authorities made sure to list things like
his age, weight and address in his arrest report. Officers also included an alias
that Poole has allegedly used in the past ― and it’s pretty awesome, as well
as NSFW. Police were called to the 37-year-old suspect’s home on a reported domestic disturbance. When the officer arrived, according to the criminal
complaint, Poole exited his home and said, “I will beat every cop’s ass!” Then
Poole “raised his right fist and began to extend it towards my face in an attempt to strike me,” the arresting officer wrote, according to The Smoking Gun.
Since Poole was arrested and taken to the Pinellas County Jail, it is highly
unlikely he made good on his ass-kicking promise. Poole was charged with
assaulting a police officer and violently resisting a police officer. What makes
this case interesting beyond Pinellas County is one tiny detail: The criminal alias
Poole has previously used, one “Dickface Johnson.” That name showed up
because Poole was either asked if he had any alias or a record on file under that
name, according to brobible.com.
You know when you’re in an art gallery and you decide to steal one of the
paintings off the wall and then you can’t find a way to jam it into your sweatshirt because it’s a painting and large rectangular paintings don’t belong inside
sweatshirts? Hate it when that happens! Well, this art thief ran into a similar
problem. Luckily, the piece was recovered by gallery staff before the suspect
could escape with it. However, the would-be thief is still on the lam. Police in
the U.K. have released surveillance video in the hopes that viewers will be able
to help locate him. Probably won’t be difficult, given his general difficulty with
the concept of hiding.

An Atoka woman turned herself in to authorities
for the April shooting death of her husband that
she alleges was an accident.
According to reports, Atoka County deputies
went to the home of Heather Leanne Calhoun and
her husband on April 14 to settle a dispute. The
husband and wife had an altercation, but deputies
were able to calm the parties down.
Later that day, they were dispatched back to the
residence in response to an accidental shooting.
Calhoun allegedly told a 911 dispatcher that her
husband had been shot but was breathing.
When deputies arrived at the scene, he was already dead. The man died from a gunshot wound to his chest.
While investigating the shooting, Calhoun told police that she and her
husband started arguing again. At some point during the argument, she
grabbed a gun from her nightstand and pointed it at the man, accidentally
shooting him. She turned herself in for the shooting on October 23.
Calhoun is being charged with murder in the second degree. Her bond
was set at $2M, and she is scheduled to appear in court on November 20,
2019.

DECEMBER IS NATIONAL DRUNK AND
DRUGGED DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH
Deaths in crashes involving
drunk drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08+
dropped in 2010, but despite this
decrease, there were still 10,228
lives lost – that’s one person every
51 minutes. That makes it everyone’s problem.
It seems that many people were
doing their part to put a stop to
this completely preventable epidemic. Alcohol-related traffic fatalities reached a low point in the late 1990s.
Research also indicates that 62% of Americans exposed to the now-iconic Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk campaign have personally intervened
to stop someone from driving drunk, no doubt saving countless lives.
However, since the late 90’s, alcohol-related driving deaths have been
steadily increasing. It seems that though the campaign was very successful, it did not change the behavior of many potential impaired drivers. Many
thought the messages to be targeted at overtly drunk drivers, and not them.
When decision time came, they would consider themselves merely “buzzed”
and get behind the wheel.
The new PSAs created to address this gap were released in December
2005 with the objective to inspire dialogue and recognition of the dangers of
“buzzed” driving and subsequently, to motivate people to stop driving buzzed.
The next installment expands on this message, equating buzzed driving and
drunk driving and demonstrating the devastating consequences that can occur as a result of buzzed driving. The overall campaign hopes to educate
people that consuming even a few drinks can impair driving and that Buzzed
Driving is Drunk Driving.
To Be A PerfecT PArenT.

Calera man Jason Anthony Potts, 19, was arrested early last month for the alleged rape and
sodomy of a teenage girl.
Reports state Potts met the 16-year-old through
Snapchat. The two started communicating
through the app. The victim told police she met
with Potts at his dorm in September, and the two
engaged in consensual sex. A few days later, she
said Potts picked her up and took her to an apartment in Calera. While they were at the apartment,
the victim told police the man raped her.
Officers arrested Potts on October 9 and was
charged with first-degree rape by force and fear,
and sodomy by force and fear. He was initially released on a $100,000 bond, but he failed to appear in court. His bond was
then set at $200,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on February
4, 2020.

18 | DECEMBER 2019 Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty CHOCTAW COUNTY
around the state
A New Jersey man pleaded guilty in
federal court to conspiring with others
to purchase, transport and sell more
than 1,000 box turtles that were unlawfully collected from the state of Oklahoma, announced U.S. Attorney Trent
Shores.
From May 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018,
William T. Gangemi, 26, of Freehold, New Jersey, knowingly facilitated the
purchase and transport of unlawfully collected three-toed and western (ornate) box turtles from Oklahoma to New Jersey in order to sell them for
profit. Gangemi was part of a syndicate of wildlife smugglers where protected turtles were exchanged back and forth between the United States
and China.
By smuggling the turtles, Gangemi violated the Lacey Act, a federal law
which makes it a felony to engage in the sale or purchase of protected
wildlife with a market value in excess of $350 knowing that the wildlife was
taken, possessed, transported or sold in violation of laws or regulations of
any state. In Oklahoma, the collection of both types of box turtles for commercial purposes is against the law. Box turtles reach sexual maturity at
approximately 10 years of age and have a high nest and juvenile mortality
rate. Due to these factors, the harvest of the turtles can have highly detrimental effects on populations.
“Oklahomans respect and value wildlife, and we don’t appreciate those
who would seek to exploit our vulnerable wildlife populations for their corrupt greed. Laws created by Congress to protect wildlife, like the box
turtle, will be enforced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Defendant Gangemi
flagrantly violated state and federal laws by illegally collecting and exporting box turtles to the black market,” said U.S. Attorney Trent Shores. “As a
result of the diligent investigative work undertaken by agents from the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Mr. Gangemi must now face the consequences.”
“This case is an excellent example of how state and federal law enforcement agencies work together to combat the illegal wildlife trade,” said Phillip Land, a Special Agent in Charge for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
“We would like to thank the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the U. S. Attorney’s Office for their assistance with this case. Together, we can hold traffickers accountable and protect imperiled species
for future generations.”
As part of his plea agreement, Gangemi agreed to pay $250,000 in
restitution to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and a
$100,000 fine to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for violation of the Lacey Act. The final restitution and fine amounts will be determined by the
Court at the time of sentencing, which is scheduled for Jan. 27, 2020.
Gangemi also pleaded guilty to additional federal charges for trafficking
wildlife in South Carolina and New Jersey.
