An OSU sophomore didn’t make
the smartest choices on April 18,
police say.
Around 1:35 a.m. that day, OSU
police officer Marc Walling was
patrolling the intersection of Hall
and Fame and Duck, near campus,
when he saw a pickup truck with
one headlight on. He made a U-turn
to stop the headlight offender, who
pulled into the OnCue gas station at
the intersection.
Walling, when he approached,
saw two men sitting in the front
seat. When he contacted the driver,
Matthew Ledford, 19, he immediately smelled a “strong odor “
of marijuana coming from the vehicle’s interior. Because of the
smell, Walling told Ledford he had probable cause to search
the truck.
In the truck, he found a backpack in the backseat, which
Ledford said belonged to him. Walling opened the backpack
and found a large clear plastic bag with marijuana inside.
There were also 20 individual bags containing marijuana,
which made Walling believe Ledford was out so late to make
drug deals undetected.
Ledford, who has a dorm on campus, was arrested on a
complaint of possession with intent to distribute. His passenger
was not arrested.
A few hours after his arrest, Ledford appeared in court and
then posted a $10,000 bond. On April 25, he pleaded not guilty
to the charge.
According to his information sheet, Ledford could face a fine
of up to $20,000, at least two years of prison time or both.
Maybe he ‘s learned his lesson — the hard way.
Ledford has a court date set for 10 a.m. June 3, during OSU’s
summer break.
Lesson learned?

A Perkins man faces a felony
charge after he caused another
man’s death April 9.
Around 6:15 a.m. that day,
officer Nick Myers went to the
9600 block of South Cottonwood
Road for a medical emergency.
A man inside the residence
was unresponsive, so LifeNet
personnel were summoned to
the scene. After trying to revive
him unsuccessfully, the man was
pronounced dead at the scene.
Multiple other people at the
residence said Matthew Prescott,
28, injected black tar heroin into the man. In an interview,
Prescott said he and the man went to Fort Worth, Texas,
where Prescott bought black tar heroin. When they got back
to the house, Prescott injected heroin into the man, he said. A
little after that, the man started having medical problems and
possibly died from an overdose, Prescott said.
Myers found the black tar heroin inside the home after
Prescott told him where he hid it. At the time, Payne County
sheriff’s captain Kevin Woodward said the man’s body was
sent to the state medical examiner’s office to determine how
he died.
Prescott was arrested and taken to jail for unlawful delivery of
a controlled substance. However, Prescott hasn’t been charged
with any degree of murder or manslaughter, records show. If
convicted of the heroin charge, he faces between two years to
life in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
Prescott remains in custody on a $200,000 bond. He pleaded
not guilty April 18, the same day he received an indigent
defense attorney.
Prescott will next appear in court at 9 a.m. May 6 on the
preliminary hearing docket.
Heroin may have contributed
to Perkins man’s death

Death Row
Roderick Smith
Roderick Lynn Smith was
convicted of killing his wife,
Jennifer Smith, and her four
children, Shameka Nicole
Carter, 10; Glen Edward Carter
Jr., 9; Ladarian J. Carter, 7;
and Kenesha R. Carter, 6, in
1993 in Canadian County.
Convicted in 1994, Smith was
handed fi ve death sentences.
Prosecutors say he killed his
wife during an argument
and then killed the children
because they were witnesses.
Jennifer Smith and her sons
were stabbed; her daughters were strangled.
During the sentencing phase, jurors heard from a former
girlfriend of Roderick Smith’s who was stabbed by him about
30 times in 1986. For that crime, Smith pleaded guilty to
assault and battery and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Defense attorneys say Smith has a brain disorder that
triggers violent episodes.
Smith has been on death row since November 14, 1994.
On May 7, oral arguments will begin before the Oklahoma
Court of Criminal Appeals alleging Smith’s death sentence
should be thrown out because the Oklahoma County jury did
not consider evidence of Smith’s alleged mental retardation.

OK Jailbirds is cooperating with the efforts of Oklahoma Department of Human Services to impact the huge
social problem of irresponsible parents who are not paying the child supports ordered by our courts.
If these biological-only parents won’t honor the courts order, perhaps public shame will get their attention.
If you know how to reach any of the Deadbeat Parents found on this page, please call the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Child Support HotLine at 1-800-522-8014
Importance of Child Support
Children are our future and child support helps make sure they
have a chance at a productive life. Children have the right to get
support from both parents and do not lose this right when a
parent leaves the home.
When children do not receive child support, they can:
Suffer both Emotionally and Physically
Live within a Reduced Standard of Living
Have their Basic Needs Unmet
Become Non-Supportive when they become Parents.
When one or both parents do not support their children,
taxpayers often pay the cost of raising children. When children
receive public assistance and their parents pay no child support,
all taxpayers bear the cost of supporting the children.

What you’re saying
about this on...
Winnie B: The officials must be planning to
run for government office. None others are as
stupid!!!
Haley A: So was he supposed to let the
bear attack him then call for help granted he
should’ve called the wild life people first but
really people he’s 76 like this man means any
harm
Becca W: ridiculous! so the make my day
law protects us from human attack but we
can’t defend ourselves against rampaging
beasts?! wtf!
Kelli O: Crazy!
Elissa T: This is ridiculous-that man was
well within his right to protect himself on
his own property-what the hell is that state
thinking-if i were the officials involved in that
state in this case id be so ASHAMED-so glad
I’m an Okie-that crap wouldn’t happen hereDarla B: OMG!!!
Brandy M: OMG poor old guy
Margaret T: thats crazy leave the man
alone he was in the right!!!!
Tasha T: So now we aren’t even allowed to
defend ourselves with getting arrested???????
Evan W: THATS BULLS**T!!!!!
Ashley N: Omg its a freaking bear... Lol who
cares... ugh...nice going America... yea... lets
choose obama.... one more time... ugh idiots!
Melvin M: Hell saved his Own Life !!
Kevin C: Thats what they get for electing the
liberal idiots is all i can say
Shawna A: Wow just shows how (beeped)
up the government is and let’s start making
BIRD feeder illegal because it leads to
shooting wild animals that are chasing you in
trying to kill you makes me think would the
bear be in jail if he had killed the man????
Sherida E: Omgoodness how crazy he was
protecting hisself.
Amber V: Ridiculous
Michele H: Everyone that lives around
bears knows that birdseed is NOT OK! That
is their favorite food. I guess if you have never
lived with them this may sound stupid. But
I have and this guy sounds stupid to me!
Of course the guy knew. So, yes, it is called
baiting. He is in the bears habitat and has to
take precautions!
John F: That’s is the dumbest thing I have
heard I would have done the same thing
Peewee M: Need to shoot some idiots with
some common sense. Meat is baiting to.
Don’t cook on your grill there. You are just
trying to kill a bear. Damn idiot
John F: He was in his YARD NOT IN THE
BEARS HABITAT 90% of all animal attacks
r done around homes look it up my has bird
feeders so she can watch birds not bears
Brandi M: I never knew bears like BIRD
seed, that ridiculous. The bear could have had
rabies and was attacking him. I’m an animal
person but if it was after me or my familly id
have shot it also. If he really wanted to kill it
he would have put poison in his “bait”.
Kyle T: He walked out knowing the bear was
there, brought a shotgun, he intended to kill
it the whole time. I like how this story makes
him out to be the victim.
A 76-year-old Auburn, Massachusetts man, Richard Ahlstrand,
had spotted a black bear in his backyard around his bird feeders.
He went to fill up his bird feeders, and as a precaution, he took
his shotgun. Sure enough, the black bear showed up and started
to chase the old man. The man aimed his shotgun at the bear
and shot it, killing the bear.
Now he’s facing charges for illegally killing the bear, illegally
baiting the bear, illegal possession of a firearm and failure to
secure a weapon. Because he “murdered” the bear, police confiscated his shotgun as well as
two others he had in his possession. Ahlstrand pointed out the idiocy of his elected officials:
“They got me set up now like I’m some kind of murderer. And then the environmental guy
told me, ‘You should have called me instead of shooting it.’ What was I going to do, say ‘Mister
Bear, would you excuse me please while I go make a phone call?’”
Authorities thought that the bear may have had cubs, but as Ahlstrand hadn’t shot the bear,
he may not be here today. He was sure it would have at least mauled him. Ahlstrand recalled
that the bear was about 7 feet tall when it stood on its hind legs, and he estimated it weighed
around 300 or 400 pounds.
Officials say the man “baited” the bear with birdseed... Because we all know that bird seed is
only used to bait bears.

Armed Bank Robber Lets His Guard Down
An armed bank robbery in
Melbourne, Fla., was cut short
when the robber seemed to become a bit mesmerized by the
blonde teller, allowing her an
opportunity to grab his gun.
According to Melbourne police, the man walked into the
Florida Business Bank on Harbor Blvd at around 2:50 p.m.,
pulled a gun from his pants
and demanded cash from the
teller.
The teller complied with the
robber’s demands and placed
an undisclosed sum of cash on
the counter.
When the robber set his gun on the counter to collect the cash, the teller quickly snatched
it up without hesitation. The robber grabbed what cash he could, stuck it in a bag and fled
from the bank on a bicycle.

FALSE PERSONATION
Two Logan County residents were
arrested April 24 after they picked the
wrong place to come down off a drug
high.
Just before 3 a.m. that morning, Sgt.
Troy Dykes was on patrol on Highway
33 when he saw a red 1984 Chevrolet
parked on the shoulder. Dykes pulled up
behind the truck to do a welfare check
and saw Bryan Austin, 46, and Lynsi St.
Cyr, 30, inside.
Dykes saw Austin’s pants were
unzipped and that he had a large knife
on his dashboard, right in front of the
steering wheel. Austin’s jacket also had
large bulges and full pockets, and, in
combination with the knife, Dykes asked
if he could do a pat-down search.
Austin consented to the search, even
helping the officer out by saying he had
a knife in a pocket. When Dykes went in
the pocket to get the knife, however, he
noticed there was a glass pipe. Austin
admitted it was a meth pipe, which
landed him in investigative detention.
Austin also had an outstanding warrant, Dykes said.
St. Cyr, for her part, told Dykes she got high with Austin four
hours before. She didn’t know why they were in Logan County,
though, saying, “I was asleep the whole time.”
A search of the truck turned up a syringe and other paraphernalia
items. Austin and St. Cyr were transported to county lockup.
Austin has four felony convictions on his record, ranging from
methamphetamine possession to multiple theft-related crimes
in Lincoln, Oklahoma and Pottawatomie Counties, records show.
The pair has court set for 9 a.m. June 27.

Treva Cannon was found dead in
her white frame house on Tuesday,
August 23, 1983. Investigation
determined she had been struck
with a blunt object, killing her.
Carter County District Attorney
Ron Worthen, and Oklahoma State
Bureau of Investigation (OSBI)
agent and Ardmore police were at
the scene late Tuesday morning
waiting for an OSBI lab team from
Oklahoma City.
“We don’t really have a lot right
now. We haven’t touched anything waiting on the lab team,” Worthen
said late that morning at the scene.
Shirley Stinson, a neighbor, said she heard a “banging noise” around 1
a.m. and got out of bed to check.
“My son had just gotten home from work and was writing a letter to his
girlfriend. So I didn’t think much about it,” the neighbor said.
Brenda Sparlin, a neighbor, said, “She usually leaves for work at 7:30
a.m. but her car was still there..... I tried to call twice before I went over
there. I knocked and she didn’t answer. The front door was open and
when I walked to the back the back door was open. I saw her in the front
bedroom.”
Ms. Cannon was a social worker for the Department of Human Services
at the Pauls Valley State School. She formerly taught at Springer junior
and senior high schools, and Ardmore Junior High School. Mrs. Cannon
received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Texas Tech
University and a master’s in education from East Texas State Teacher’s
College. She also received a master’s degree in social work from the
University of Oklahoma. She was a resident of Ardmore area for 21 years.
Ms. Cannon’s murderer has never been found.

Ever think to yourself, “what an
amazing time we live in?”
Technology is so incredible, that
we take for granted stuff that wasn’t even possible 40 or 50 years
ago. Whether its cell phones, GPS systems, instant information
through the internet or high tech cars, we go through this world with
a wide array of things that make our lives easier. But what happens
when something goes wrong? I’m going to talk about things that
can go wrong, that may leave you on the side of the road, and ways
you can help yourself in these situations.
Its hard to believe that people still run out of gas these days.
Incredibly, it still happens on an almost daily basis. Sometimes, it
is the result of just not paying attention, and sometimes it is the
result of trusting a little too much in the technology that is built into
our automobiles today. All Troopers have heard from a stranded
motorist that their vehicle said they still had 20 more miles until
empty. The fact is, that number is usually generated by past driving
behavior and gas mileage averages, and is not an actual measure of
how much gas is left in the automobile. Do yourself a favor and give
a cushion...start looking to fill up any time you are under a 1/4 tank
of fuel. Also, pay attention to the gas gauge. In the event that you do
run out of gas, be prepared! No matter how high tech your vehicle is
today, its just a big hunk of metal if it runs out of gas! You may want
to carry a small gas can. You certainly want to get your vehicle off
of the roadway to prevent it from being a traffic hazard and putting
yourself and others in danger. If you walk to a gas station, be alert
for traffic. *55 will get you in touch with a local Highway Patrol
Headquarters, but the Trooper may be a long way off, or on a call,
so be prepared to help yourself! Another common problem we run
into is people who need their vehicle jump-started. You may forget
to turn the lights off and park it somewhere, or leave an interior
light on, or anything that may drain the battery.
Carry a set of jumper cables. If you have those, all you’ll need
is another person whose vehicle is running, and you can get yours
going! Make sure to refer to the owner’s manual to make sure how
to hook up the cables properly. As high tech as vehicles are today,
hooking them up wrong could result in further problems!
Ever hear that old saying about and “ounce of prevention”? Keep
up the maintenance on your vehicle. The owner’s manual usually
has a maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle. Old sayings
usually are old because they are tried and true! Thanks for reading,
buckle up, and be safe!

Senate Bill 456, by state Sen. Josh Brecheen
and state Rep. Arthur Hulbert, is designed to
help reduce fraud in Oklahoma by requiring
every county office of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to post information
on how people can report fraud through a tollfree hotline and that they can do so anonymously.
“Fraud by anyone is a lie that costs our state
money and diverts funds away from those that
truly need it,” said Hulbert, R-Fort Gibson. “I
enjoyed working with Senator Josh Brecheen
on this legislation and am pleased with the
overwhelming bipartisan support it has received.”
Brecheen encouraged Oklahomans to report fraud to the Oklahoma Department of Human
Services.
“Public assistance fraud costs Oklahoma taxpayers millions of dollars every year. This is an
issue that negatively impacts all Oklahomans but DHS simply doesn’t have the workforce to
constantly check up on the thousands of public assistance recipients in our state. They need
the public’s help by being vigilant in their communities and reporting suspected fraud,” said
Brecheen, R-Coalgate. “As legislators and citizens, it’s our duty to be good stewards of tax
dollars and this bill will help ensure that assistance goes to families who truly qualify and that
funds aren’t allocated through fraudulent means.”
The legislation was developed in consultation with and the support of the DHS Office of
Inspector General. Such signage has been printed and dispensed sporadically before but displaying it has never been a statutory requirement for county DHS offices. The emphasis on
anonymity encourages people to report fraud without fearing for their employment or personal relationships, Brecheen said.
The legislation was approved by a 95-0 vote in the Oklahoma House of Representatives and
previously by a 41-0 vote in the Oklahoma Senate.
It now advances to the desk of Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin.

Samantha Jo Bryant, a 23-year-old
Glenpool woman, was charged April 3
after she allegedly engaged in a sex act
with a 4-year-old girl, then allowed her
boyfriend to molest the girl while she took
photographs.
According to police, Bryant and the
male suspect, identified as 25-year-old
Jonathan Adleta, were arrested under
the direction of the FBI in response to
an investigation into the production and
transmission of child pornography.
During a police interview, Bryant
reportedly told officers that she performed
a sex act on her 4-year-old relative while
Adleta took photographs. Bryant then
allowed Adleta to perform sex acts on the
child while she took photographs.
Bryant’s 3-year-old son, who is now in
protective custody, was present inside the
home when the alleged abuse took place.
According to reports, the 4-year-old
victim had been staying with Bryant and
her boyfriend on the weekends when the
alleged abuse occurred. When the child
returned from a visit during Christmas
break, family members suspected something was wrong and took
the child to a doctor.
At the conclusion of a physical examination, child protective
services were alerted to possible child abuse. That’s when the child
reportedly told CPS investigators about the alleged abuse.
Bryant and Adleta were arrested after FBI agents, assisted by
Glenwood Police, searched the couple’s home and found child
pornography. Jon Adleta was also taken into custody on a federal
arrest warrant out of Orlando, Florida.
Bryant was booked into the Tulsa County Jail and charged with
two counts of lewd molestation of a minor under the age of 16. Her
bond has been set at $100,000.
Jonathon Adleta is being held on a charge of aiding and abetting
the transportation of a minor for sexual purposes.
FBI agents say the investigation is still in its early stages and that
additional charges may be forthcoming.

Answer: The first thing to
understand in this discussion
is that there is only one race—
the human race. Caucasians,
Africans, Asians, Indians, Arabs,
and Jews are not different
races. Rather, they are different
ethnicities of the human race.
All human beings have the same
physical characteristics (with
minor variations, of course).
More importantly, all human
beings are created in the image
and likeness of God (Genesis
1:26-27). God loved the world so
much that He sent Jesus to lay
down His life for us (John 3:16).
The “world” obviously includes all ethnic groups.
God does not show partiality or favoritism (Deuteronomy 10:17; Acts 10:34;
Romans 2:11; Ephesians 6:9), and neither should we. James 2:4 describes
those who discriminate as “judges with evil thoughts.” Instead, we are to love
our neighbors as ourselves (James 2:8). All forms of racism, prejudice, and
discrimination are affronts to the work of Christ on the cross.
Jesus commands us to love one another as He loves us (John 13:34). If God is
impartial and loves us with impartiality, then we need to love others with that
same high standard. Jesus teaches in Matthew 25 that whatever we do to the
least of His brothers, we do to Him. If we treat a person with contempt, we are
mistreating a person created in God’s image; we are hurting somebody whom
God loves and for whom Jesus died.
Racism, in varying forms and to various degrees, has been a plague on humanity
for thousands of years. Brothers and sisters of all ethnicities, this should not be.
Victims of racism, prejudice, and discrimination need to forgive. Ephesians 4:32
declares, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just
as in Christ God forgave you.” Racists may not deserve your forgiveness, but we
deserved God’s forgiveness far less.
What does the Bible say about racism,
prejudice, and discrimination?

A Chandler man should double-check
his drug clients’ ties after his arrest
April 19, police say.
Stroud Police Chief Clint Gaylord said
an off-duty Chandler police officer told
him he was getting text messages from
an unfamiliar number, and the person
was trying to sell him drugs. The sender
also told the officer he needed a ride so
he could get more drugs.
The officer said the person got a ride
from a friend so he could go to O’Reilly’s
for parts. Gaylord and several other
officers found the friend’s PT Cruiser
and followed them along Highway 99. At that point, the Chandler
officer said he received a text that said the person wanted $20 for
¼ paper.
Gaylord initiated a traffic stop, and the driver pulled over two
blocks away. The chief noticed the passenger moving around
quickly in the front seat, so when he approached, both occupants
had to put their hands on the dash.
He found the driver, who wasn’t arrested, and the passenger,
Jerry Ashcraft, and ran license checks on them. Ashcraft’s number
matched the one who was texting the off-duty Chandler officer,
Gaylord said. Because of that, Gaylord called another officer to
bring a K-9 to the scene.
Ashcraft, for his part, turned over his black flip phone to Gaylord,
and he said he had bruises on arms from using meth. The friend
had two pills in a cigarette box that weren’t prescribed to him, but
he said they were “given” to him.
After the K-9 finished searching the car, Ashcraft was arrested
for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. In an
interview, he said he was sending text messages in attempts to sell
methamphetamine, but didn’t realize he was texting a cop.
Ashcraft remains in custody on a $50,000 bond. He has court set
for 1:30 p.m. May 2.
